For All the People
Praise for For All the People John Curl has been around the block when it comes to knowing work- ers’ cooperatives. He has been a worker owner. He has argued theory and practice, inside the firms where his labor counts for something more than token control and within the determined, but still small uni- verse where labor rents capital, using it as it sees fit and profitable. So his book, For All the People: The Hidden History of Cooperation, Cooperative Movements, and Communalism in America, reached expectant hands, and an open mind when it arrived in Asheville, NC. Am I disappointed? No, not in the least. Curl blends the three strands of his historical narrative with aplomb, he has, after all, been researching, writing, revising, and editing the text for a spell. Further, I am certain he has been responding to editors and publishers asking this or that. He may have tired, but he did not give up, much inspired, I am certain, by the determination of the women and men he brings to life. Each of his subtitles could have been a book, and has been written about by authors with as many points of ideological view as their titles. Curl sticks pretty close to the narrative line written by worker own- ers, no matter if they came to work every day with a socialist, laborist, anti-Marxist grudge or not. Often in the past, as with today’s worker owners, their firm fails, a dream to manage capital kaput. Yet today, as yesterday, the democratic ideals of hundreds of worker owners support vibrantly profitable businesses. -

For students of HI 2106 – Themes in modern American history and HI 2018 – American History: A survey READING LISTS General Reading: 1607-1991 Single or two-volume overviews of American history are big business in the American academic world. They are generally reliable, careful and bland. An exception is Bernard Bailyn et al, The Great Republic: a history of the American people which brings together thoughtful and provocative essays from some of America’s top historians, for example David Herbert Donald and Gordon Wood. This two-volume set is recommended for purchase (and it will shortly be available in the library). Other useful works are George Tindall, America: a Narrative History, Eric Foner, Give me Liberty and P.S. Boyer et al, The Enduring Vision all of which are comprehensive, accessible up to date and contain very valuable bibliographies. Among the more acceptable shorter alternatives are M.A. Jones, The Limits of Liberty and Carl Degler, Out of our Past. Hugh Brogan, The Penguin history of the United States is entertaining and mildly idiosyncratic. A recent highly provocative single- volume interpretative essay on American history which places war at the centre of the nation’s development is Fred Anderson and Andrew Cayton, The Dominion of War: Empire and Liberty in North America, 1500-2000 All of the above are available in paperback and one should be purchased. Anthologies of major articles or extracts from important books are also a big commercial enterprise in U.S. publishing. By far the most useful and up-to-date is the series Major problems in American History published by D.C. -

He is given credit for discovering the "New World," when he landed on and named the Caribbean island of San Salvador on October 12, 1492. He conducted three other journeys prior to his death in 1503. John Cabot – Italian named Giovanni Caboto who explored the northeastern coast of North America for England in 1497. Ponce de León - Spanish explorer who sailed to the America in 1513 and 1521, exploring Florida in search of gold and perhaps the fabled "fountain of youth," before being killed by a Native American arrow. Hernando de Soto –Spanish conquistador who led expedition from Florida west to the Mississippi (1540-1542) with 600 men in search of gold. He discovered the Mississippi River, before being killed by Indians and buried in the river. Francisco Coronado - From 1540 to 1542, he explored the pueblos of Arizona and New Mexico looking for the legendary city of gold El Dorado, penetrating as far east as Kansas. He also discovered the Grand Canyon and huge herds of bison. Bartolomé de Las Casas - A Spanish missionary who was appalled by the method of encomienda systems, calling it “a moral pestilence invented by Satan.” Giovanni da Verranzo - Another Italian explorer, he was sent by the French king in 1524 to probe the eastern seaboard of what is today’s U.S. Don Juan de Oñate - Leader of a Spanish group that traveled parts of Mexico, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas in 1598. -

The Radical Democratic Thought of Thomas Jefferson: Politics, Space, & Action Dean Caivano A Dissertation Submitted To The Faculty Of Graduate Studies In Partial Fulfillment Of The Requirements For The Degree Of Doctor Of Philosophy Graduate Program in Political Science York University Toronto, Ontario May 2019 © Dean Caivano, 2019 Abstract Thomas Jefferson has maintained an enduring legacy in the register of early American political thought. As a prolific writer and elected official, his public declarations and private letters helped to inspire revolutionary action against the British monarchy and shape the socio-political landscape of a young nation. While his placement in the American collective memory and scholarship has remained steadfast, a crucial dimension of his thinking remains unexplored. In this dissertation, I present a heterodox reading of Jefferson in order to showcase his radical understanding of politics. Although Jefferson’s political worldview is strikingly complex, marked by affinities with liberal, classical republican, Scottish, and Christian modes of thought, this interpretation reveals the radical democratic nature of his project. Primarily, this dissertation expands the possibilities of Jefferson’s thought as explored by Hannah Arendt and other thinkers, such as Richard K. Matthews and Michael Hardt. Drawing from these explicitly radical readings, I further dialogue with Jefferson’s thought through extensive archival research, which led me to engage in the theoretical and historical sources of inspiration that form and underscore his thinking. In so doing, I offer a new reading of Jefferson’s view on politics, suggesting that there contains an underlying objective, setting, and method to his unsystematic, yet innovative prescriptions concerning democracy. -

It is available to be taken by all Senior Freshman Single Honors, TSM and HPS students, as well as to Visiting Students. Assessment of this module takes the form of (i) An essay which is to be submitted by all participants in the module (SH, TSM, HPS and Visiting students) on Mon 28th March 2016. This essay will account for 20% of the overall assessment of this module. And (ii) A three-hour examination which will be held in the examining period commencing 2nd May which will account for 80% of the module’s assessment. Written tutorial assignments will also be required in this course.
