Lincoln and Mcclellan: a Marriage of Convenience Turned Sour
TCNJ JOURNAL OF STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP VOLUME XVI APRIL, 2014 LINCOLN AND MCCLELLAN: A MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE TURNED SOUR Author: Kevin Caprice Faculty Sponsor: Daniel Crofts, Department of History ABSTRACT AND INTRODUCTION When observing the relationship between President Abraham Lincoln and General George B. McClellan, it is tempting to approach the story as a common one of hero versus villain. As Joseph Harsh explains in his essay on McClellan, the General’s “role in the Unionist scenario is all but predetermined. He is the first and sorriest of the candidates to try the patience of Lincoln.”1 While these anti-McClellan histories were not without basis, they failed to realize that Lincoln was not without fault in this relationship. The relationship between Lincoln and McClellan was indeed a marriage, but it was a marriage of convenience, and sadly for both men they married too young and inexperienced. McClellan was certainly a thorn in Lincoln’s side, but Lincoln did not yet know how properly to handle a general, so rather than walk around the sticker bush, Lincoln dove in headfirst. McClellan and Lincoln were both ill equipped to handle their new positions and both did things to one another that, had they encountered each other later in the war, they may not have done. Sadly for them, their relationship became a casualty of their inexperience. I. AS BACHELORS Abraham Lincoln’s story before meeting McClellan is well documented; briefly, he was born on February 12, 1809, in Kentucky. Lincoln came from poverty, received only one year of formal education, and worked hard for everything he accomplished. -

ABSTRACT MINTING AMERICA: COINAGE AND THE CONTESTATION OF AMERICAN IDENTITY, 1775-1800 by James Patrick Ambuske “Minting America” investigates the ideological and culture links between American identity and national coinage in the wake of the American Revolution. In the Confederation period and in the Early Republic, Americans contested the creation of a national mint to produce coins. The catastrophic failure of the paper money issued by the Continental Congress during the War for Independence inspired an ideological debate in which Americans considered the broader implications of a national coinage. More than a means to conduct commerce, many citizens of the new nation saw coins as tangible representations of sovereignty and as a mechanism to convey the principles of the Revolution to future generations. They contested the physical symbolism as well as the rhetorical iconology of these early national coins. Debating the stories that coinage told helped Americans in this period shape the contours of a national identity. Lincoln Studies at the Bicentennial: A Round Table Lincoln Theme 2.0 Matthew Pinsker Early during the 1989 spring semester at Harvard University, members of Professor Da- vid Herbert Donald’s graduate seminar on Abraham Lincoln received diskettes that of- fered a glimpse of their future as historians. The 3.5 inch floppy disks with neatly typed labels held about a dozen word-processing files representing the whole of Don E. Feh- renbacher’s Abraham Lincoln: A Documentary Portrait through His Speeches and Writings (1964). Donald had asked his secretary, Laura Nakatsuka, to enter this well-known col- lection of Lincoln writings into a computer and make copies for his students. He also showed off a database containing thousands of digital note cards that he and his research assistants had developed in preparation for his forthcoming biography of Lincoln.1 There were certainly bigger revolutions that year. The Berlin Wall fell. A motley coalition of Afghan tribes, international jihadists, and Central Intelligence Agency (cia) operatives drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Virginia voters chose the nation’s first elected black governor, and within a few more months, the Harvard Law Review selected a popular student named Barack Obama as its first African American president. Yet Donald’s ven- ture into digital history marked a notable shift. The nearly seventy-year-old Mississippi native was about to become the first major Lincoln biographer to add full-text searching and database management to his research arsenal. More than fifty years earlier, the revisionist historian James G. Randall had posed a question that helps explain why one of his favorite graduate students would later show such a surprising interest in digital technology as an aging Harvard professor. -

US History Syllabus: Regular, Honors, and Advanced Placement 1. Overview : This course will cover United States history from its pre-colonial period beginning in c. 1492 to the present. It covers all major aspects of American history during that period including: political, diplomatic, intellectual, cultural, economic and social. In addition, the course deals extensively with learning how to read, understand, analyze and interpret a wide variety of both primary and secondary texts together with the maps, graphs and pictorial materials associated with them. The course also aims to help students to put the knowledge and understanding they are gaining into practice through sharpening their oral and written communication skills. This will be achieved in two ways: First, through regular class discussions and occasional assigned oral presentations or debates. Second, through the regular writing of focused essays that require both knowledge and analytical and interpretive skills. Though challenging, this course is extremely important in understanding the United States of America as it exists in the world today. Students will be rewarded in a myriad of ways for the effort they put into it. Finally, if the past is any guide to the present – and I believe that you will learn that it is – this course will be one of the most enjoyable and beneficial that you will ever take in your high school career. 2. Course Requirements : This US History course is taught at a high college preparatory level for Regular and Honors students and at a college level for AP students. The expectations for students will be equivalent to those levels. -

Themes in Modern American History Tutorial Schedule
HI2016 Themes in Modern American History Michaelmas Term, 2010 Tutorial Schedule Tutorial Assignments: Each student will be asked to make one presentation during the term. The student should choose a secondary source related to the week’s topic from a list of possibilities designated “recommended reading” (see below). He or she will offer a brief (3-5 minute) presentation on the text that illuminates the text’s main arguments and contributions to historical scholarship. No presentations will be held on week one of tutorials, but students will be expected to sign up during class for their future presentation. Readings: Please note that most required readings are available online; please use the links provided to ensure that you have the correct version of the document. All other required readings will be available in a box placed outside the history department. These photocopies are only to be borrowed and promptly returned (by the end of the day or the next morning if borrowed in the late afternoon). They are not to be kept.
