MACHAMUX Gallery is proud to announce its second exhibition: DONNA FERRATO WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT? Present day politics has brought the vernacular (or risqué) jargon for a vagina, "pussy" into colloquial usage. Photographer Donna Ferrato addresses this etymological evolution with selections from her autobiographical photographic archive spanning five decades.

Donna Ferrato is a photographer, photojournalist, activist, and teacher known for her dauntless dedication to revealing darker sides of humanity. She has documented cardinal collections of images concerning the horrors and exquisiteness of human relationships. TIME included her photograph of a domestic abuse situation as one of the “100 Most Influential Photographs of All Time.” She is a recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Humanistic Photography; a W. Eugene Smith Grant; the Missouri Honor Medal for Service in Journalism; and Artist of the Year at the Tribeca Film Festival. She has published 7 books including “Living with the Enemy” and “Love and Lust” with the Aperture Foundation; and “TRIBECA 9/11/01-9/11/11” with La Oficina de Arte. A proclamation from the City of New York announced October 30, 2008 “Donna Ferrato Appreciation Day” for her “continued service as an example of advocacy and activism and as a citizen that the city is proud to call one of its own.”

We are committed to social justice dialogues and promoting historically underrepresented artists: Women; First Peoples; People of Color, and all contemporary artworld refugees. MACHAMUX builds a bullhorn for the ARTIST-AS-CITIZEN. The gallery’s name is inspired by the First Nation of MACHAMUX — aboriginal inhabitants of the area where the gallery now stands in Westport, Connecticut. MACHAMUX — according to lore — translates to ‘‘The Promised Land’’ A portion of each sale benefits a nature sanctuary next to the gallery.

MACHAMUX is located in a converted 1954 suburban living room near the sea in Westport Connecticut — 44 miles from NYC — and on the internet.
