The party devised pathways through canyons and mountain passes, connecting the trail south from the Willamette Valley with the existing California Trail to Fort Hall, Idaho. In August 1846, the first emigrants to trek the new southern road left Fort Hall. -

http://www.oregonpioneers.com/1843.htm 1 Applegate Emigrants to Oregon In 1843 Albert APPLEGATE was actually born in the Oregon Territory December 6, 1843 at the abandoned Willamette Mission where his parents, Charles Applegate and Melinda Miller, wintered. While not enumerated as an emigrant of that year he can certainly be considered a pioneer of that time period. Albert married January 17, 1869 at Drain, Douglas County, Oregon to Nancy Johnson. His adult years were spent in the Douglas Co area. It was here that he raised his family: Mercy D. (1870), Nellie M. (1871), Jesse Grant (1873), Fred (1875) and Lulu (1878). Albert died March 18, 1888. After his death his wife, Nancy Johnson Applegate, married James Shelley and was residing at Eugene, Lane County, Oregon in the 1900 census. Alexander McClelland APPLEGATE was born Mar 11, 1838 in St. Clair County, Missouri, the son of Jesse Applegate and Cynthia Parker. He was five years old at the time the Applegates crossed the plains to Oregon in 1843. With his family he settled in Polk County in 1844 and in 1850 was living in Benton County. By 1860 the family had moved to Yoncalla, Douglas County, OR. Shortly after arriving, Alex went to the Idaho gold fields with Henry Lane, son of the famous Joseph Lane, who lived in nearby Roseburg. He and Henry and Alex's cousin John Applegate enjoyed playing the fiddle together. They often played at dances as "The Fiddlers Three." Henry Lane had been a suitor of Alex’s cousin, Harriet. When the young men received the news in Idaho of the death of Harriet Applegate, Alex wrote home: "Your dream that some of us who parted last spring would no longer meet again in this life has been fulfilled. -

Jesse Applegate (1811-1888) 1 http://sos.oregon.gov/archives/exhibits/constitution/Pages/during-about-applegate.aspx Biographical Sketch of Jesse Applegate Born 1811, Died 1888 , Umpqua County delegate Jesse Applegate was born on July 5, 1811, in Henry County, Kentucky. He moved to and was schooled in St. Louis, Missouri, where he learned surveying. In 1831 he married and took up a land claim in St. Clair County, Missouri and farmed, surveyed and kept a country store. In 1843, Jesse along with his wife and many children and accompanied by two brothers and their families moved to Oregon. He served as member of the legislative committee of the provisional government in 1845. In 1846 he was involved in establishing an important southern route to Oregon, which was later known as the Applegate Trail. He represented Umpqua County at the constitutional convention but withdrew when a resolution he proposed prohibiting the discussion of slavery was not adopted. “I have no doubt there is honesty and talent enough in this body to frame a constitution that will be approved by the people of Oregon without my assistance.” He served for a number of years both as justice of the peace and as postmaster of Yoncalla. In 1856, he acted as a guide for Major Kearney in a campaign against the Rogue River Indians. He died on April 22, 1888. Applegate settled on a land claim in the Umpqua Valley in 1849 in a place he called Yoncalla after the local Indian tribe. There he farmed and raised cattle. A student and writer, Applegate maintained a large library in his house. -

Unit I. The Pioneers: 1800-1840 Who Explored the Oregon Trail? The emigrants of the 1840s were not the first to travel the Oregon Trail. The colorful history of our country makes heroes out of the explorers, mountain men, soldiers, and scientists who opened up the West. In 1540 the Spanish explorer Coronado ventured as far north as present-day Kansas, but the inland routes across the plains remained the sole domain of Native Americans until 1804, when Lewis and Clark skirted the edges on their epic journey of discovery to the Pacific Northwest and Zeb Pike explored the "Great American Desert," as the Great Plains were then known. The Lewis and Clark Expedition had a direct influence on the economy of the West even before the explorers had returned to St. Louis. Private John Colter left the expedition on the way home in 1806 to take up the fur trade business. For the next 20 years the likes of Manuel Lisa, Auguste and Pierre Choteau, William Ashley, James Bridger, Kit Carson, Tom Fitzgerald, and William Sublette roamed the West. These part romantic adventurers, part self-made entrepreneurs, part hermits were called mountain men. By 1829, Jedediah Smith knew more about the West than any other person alive. The Americans became involved in the fur trade in 1810 when John Jacob Astor, at the insistence of his friend Thomas Jefferson, founded the Pacific Fur Company in New York. -

Cromwell, Ph.D. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site National Park Service 612 East Reserve St Vancouver, Washington 98661 September, 2010 Northwest Cultural Resources Institute Short Report No. 34 1 Introduction The “Old Apple Tree,” is located within Old Apple Tree Park, which is a part of the City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation Department, but also within the Vancouver National Historic Reserve (VNHR). The VNHR is a congressionally legislated Reserve located in Clark County, Vancouver, Washington, with historical contexts commemorating the prehistoric past, as well as historic elements associated with the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) Fort Vancouver, the U.S. Army Vancouver Barracks, and the Kaiser Shipyards. The VNHR is jointly managed by the National Park Service (NPS), the City of Vancouver, the U.S. Army, and the State of Washington. Although Old Apple Tree Park is managed by the City of Vancouver, the NPS acts as the lead federal agency for all Sec. 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act undertakings throughout the VNHR, and as the lead on cultural resources issues. It is under these auspices that this effort at recording the historical significance of the tree is being made by the NPS. Specifically, the Old Apple Tree is located in the Northeast (NE) ¼ section of the Southwest (SW) ¼ section of Section 27, Range 1E, Township 2 N, Willamette Meridian (Figure 1). It can be accessed from the south by pedestrians through a tunnel under the BNSF Railway railroad berm, coming from Columbia Way Boulevard; or from the east via the Landbridge Pedestrian Trail, which crosses over SR-14. -

Southern Route
Chapter Eight Southern Route Capt. Levi Scott was the epitome of a self-made man of the American frontier – a bona fide “frontiersman.” Born February 8. 1797, and raised without benefit of loving parents on the edge of the frontier, the fiercely independent Scott had migrated west over the Oregon Trail in 1844, upon the untimely loss of his wife of twenty-five years. Scott was seizing what was to be his last chance to start life anew, on the new American frontier which was moving to distant Oregon. Owing to the excessive rains in 1844, the entire migration got underway late on the Oregon Trail. But halfway through the journey Capt. Scott demonstrated the leadership qualities he had developed while commanding a company in the Black Hawk Wars in Illinois against the Sac Indians from 1831 to 1833. According to his account, Scott was elected to assume the leadership of half of Nathaniel Ford’s trail followers, when they grew dissatisfied with their former leader. By the time Scott’s party reached Ft. Hall in early September, they traded their team and wagon with the proprietor of the fort for horses and pack-rigging, and proceeded on horseback for the remainder of the journey. Scott explained that their work oxen had become exhausted, and it was getting so late in the season that his party feared they might be caught by the winter snows in the mountains. Upon reaching the Dalles of the Columbia River late in October, the travelers had arrived at the point where most all emigrants sought out means to transport their families and equipment down this treacherous stretch in the journey. -

Hannah Ann (Davis) Hendricks (Courtesy Fred Elvin Inlow) DEDICATION We respectfully dedicate this, the fourteenth issue of Klamath Echoes, to Hanna Ann Davis, 14 years of age in 1847. She came west across the plains with her father, three brothers and four sisters, her mother having died en route. Traveling the Oregon- California and Applegate Trails, they arrived at Fandango Valley, east of Goose Lake in extreme Northeastern California on September 29, 1847. While Hanna Ann was preparing the evening meal, three arrows were fired into the camp by Indians hiding in the nearby brush. Two of the arrows struck Hanna Ann. One passed through the calf of her leg and the other through her arm and into her side. She fell into the fire and was severely burned. According to Lester G. Hulin, the 1847 diarist, three days later Hanna Ann was still unable to ride in a wagon and "had to be carried by a stage [stretcher?]. Only recently have we learned (from information furnished by Fred Elvin Inlow, Medford, Oregon, a distant relative) that Hanna Ann survived, later married, and raised a family of ten children. -
The Applegate Trail
The Applegate Trail By Stephen Most In 1843 three brothers, Jesse, Lindsay, and Charles Applegate and their families, joined the emigrants who traveled the Oregon Trail. Times had been hard back home in Missouri. Prices of pork and other stock had fallen so low, there was no point taking them to market. Yet that suffering did not prepare the Applegates for the hardships of their journey, especially the calamity on the Columbia River, whose currents swept three of their children away and killed two of them. In 1846 Jesse and Lindsay Applegate, together with Leon Scott, headed a party to locate a less dangerous route to the Willamette Valley. Rather than bring families, oxen, and wagons over the Blue Mountains and along the daunting Columbia, the new route would lead emigrants through the southern mountains of the Cascade Range. The road that Scott and the Applegates built went through Nevada desert, passed Goose Lake, Tule Lake, and Lower Klamath Lake at the California-Oregon border, crossed the Cascades into the Rogue River Valley, then headed north toward the pioneers’ destination. The new road proved to be no easy detour. The first winter that the Applegate Trail was open for emigration came early and caused great suffering. This was the fatal winter of 1846-1847 when the Donner Party came to grief crossing California’s Sierra Nevada. It was also unfortunate that the Applegate Trail passed through the homeland of the Modocs. One band of Modocs ambushed emigrants at a place on the edge of Tule Lake that became known as Bloody Point.
