McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BROWN, MEGAN R., M.A., December 2012, Film Studies A Binary Within the Binary: Machinima as Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation (128 pp.) Director of Thesis: Louis-Georges Schwartz. This thesis traces machinima, films created in real-time from videogame engines, from the exterior toward the interior, focusing on the manner in which the medium functions as a tool for marginalized expression in the face of commercial and corporate inclusion. I contextualize machinima in three distinct contexts: first, machinima as historiography, which allows its minority creators to articulate and distribute their interpretation of national and international events without mass media interference. Second, machinima as a form of fan fiction, in which filmmakers blur the line between consumers and producers, a feature which is slowly being warped as videogame studios begin to incorporate machinima into marketing techniques. Finally, the comparison between psychoanalytic film theory, which explains the psychological motivations behind cinema's appeal, applied to videogames and their resulting machinima, which knowingly disregard established theory and create agency through parody. -

Second Annual SXSW Gaming Awards Announces Top Winners in 21 Categories Dragon Age: Inquisition takes home Game of the Year followed by three award wins for Middle- earth: Shadow of Mordor AUSTIN, Texas (Mar. 14, 2015) — South by Southwest (SXSW) Gaming today announced the winners of the second-annual SXSW Gaming Awards – part of the SXSW Gaming Expo – presented by iam8bit, Logitech, Porter Novelli, Twitch and Wikia. Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater hosted the ceremony which was co-emceed by actress and comedian Janet Varney and popular YouTube personality Markiplier. In all, 21 awards were handed out, with Dragon Age: Inquisition taking the top honor as Game of the Year. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor followed with three award wins, including Excellence in Gameplay and Excellence in Animation. Speedrunners was chosen by gamers on the show floor to take home the Gamer’s Voice Award, beating out 29 other games showcased in the SXSW Gaming Indie Corner. To be considered for the Gamer’s Voice Award, games must have had less than $1 million in funding; a working and playable demo; and be released by the end of 2015 or shortly thereafter. “We’re ecstatic to see the gaming industry and gamers alike embrace the SXSW Gaming Awards,” said Justin Burnham, SXSW Gaming Project Manager. “Our awards bring together the voice of gamers everywhere with those of industry experts to decide the best of the best. Congrats to the team behind Dragon Age: Inquisition for its Game of the Year win and to the rest of this year’s winners for making 2014 another stellar year for gaming!” The submission process opened in August 2014 through the official Gaming Awards page and closed in December. -

Second-Annual SXSW Gaming Awards Announces Finalists in 21 Categories Actress and comedian Janet Varney and YouTube personality Markiplier to host Dragon Age: Inquisition out in front with five nominations including Excellence in Narrative and Game of the Year AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 22, 2015) — South by Southwest (SXSW) Gaming today announced the finalists for its second-annual SXSW Gaming Awards presented by iam8bit, Logitech, Porter Novelli and Wikia – part of SXSW Gaming 2015 – taking place on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. at Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater. The Gaming Awards will honor major studio and indie game titles in 21 categories. The SXSW Gaming Awards are free and open to the public of all ages; Interactive, Gold and Platinum Badge holders receive early entry and preferred seating. The SXSW Gaming Awards complements the 2015 SXSW Gaming Expo, which runs March 13- 15, 2015. Located at the Palmer Events Center, the SXSW Gaming Expo is also a free event and open to the public of all ages. “It’s fantastic to see the SXSW Gaming Expo continue to get bigger and better each year and to have the Gaming Awards continue to grow along with it,” said Justin Burnham, SXSW Gaming Project Manager. “We’ve added several new award categories in 2015 and with a diverse list of finalists, from heavy-hitting AAA titles like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor to indie stand-outs like Shovel Knight, we’re excited to see who comes out on top!” Making the awards ceremony a truly entertaining and celebratory evening, this year’s event will be hosted by actress and comedian Janet Varney along with actor and popular YouTube personality Markiplier. -

Computers and other digital devices have been used for gaming since the 1940s. However, the growth in popularity of commercial videogames has only recently been witnessed in museums. This paper creates an overview of how digital gaming devices have been introduced in museum exhibitions over the last fifteen years.
