Delmonico The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between gamer personality types, preferred coping strategies, and levels of resiliency as a means of beginning to understand the psychological factors making up the gamer culture. This study used a demographic questionnaire, the BrainHex Gamer Personality Test, the Coping Strategies Inventory Short Form, and the ER-89 Ego Resiliency Scale to assess participants. Chi Square analyses were used to explore gamer personality types relationship with coping strategies, a Median Test was used to compare personality types to resiliency levels, and Multiple Regressions were used to explore whether a person’s coping style mediated the relationship between personality and resiliency level. The result of these analyses was that there was no significant relationship between personality iv type, coping strategy, and resiliency levels, with the exception of a moderate negative relationship between engagement coping and resiliency. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Dr. David Delmonico, words cannot express my appreciation for your help on this endeavor. You picked up this project with me after it had already begun, but without breaking stride worked with me every step of the way to carve out something with which I am so proud. You were always there when I needed an encouraging word, a reassurance, or the push to "get this thing done." Thank you for everything you have taught me. I know that without you I would not have shifted the way in which I look at research, and made the necessary steps to begin what I hope is the first step of a continuing career in scholarship. Since my early classes with you in the Masters program, to my time as your Teaching Assistant in the sexuality class, and now through this research process I have learned so much from you and have been blessed with the opportunity to work with you. Dr. Maura Krushinski, I owe you my gratitude for helping me to take my ideas from their nebulous infancy into fully formed directions. Thank you for your role in pushing me to stop thinking small, and begin to explore how far I could take this study. I appreciate too your efforts in reminding me to stay focused on sharing what I know about this culture, and in believing in me when I needed someone in the field to help me look past all of the naysayers. Dr. Bryson Bresnahan, thank you so much for your unwavering patience with me as we worked through the processing of data and the examination of statistics. I appreciate the hours of time spent on the phone, at Starbucks, and via email that you put in to ensure that I really understood not just what was being suggested, but why the stats vi were being used, and why this information was important. Thank you for this continued effort from the beginning of the study to the very end. Dr. Bill Casile, I have to thank you for your willingness to join in on this research somewhat late in the game. Your efforts in helping me to better understand the writing process are so appreciated. Your ability to at once challenge me to work harder on my writing style and as well support me in communicating my ideas was a much needed experience. I was sharing with Dr. Delmonico before the defense that I appreciated your feedback on my writing, because I think that you helped me to construct a more fluid document. Thank you for everything. To Kyle Marsden-Kish, Larry Settembrini, Jason Scorrano and all of the wonderful people of ReedPop who have supported my success by helping me to be present at their conventions. This was most centrally at PAX East for this study, but also at New York Comic Con where I have continued to try and reach out to this gamer and geek community. Thank you all for providing such great events so that we in the community can attend them and interact with one another. To Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, I share my appreciation for what you've done for the gaming community. You have, inadvertently, but directly helped to make my research possible by creating the PAX Conventions, and have indirectly continued to inspire me through your compassion for your fans and your unwavering passion for all of the gamer centric and geeky things you shamelessly love. You may not know it, but you both contributed significantly to this work, as well as a portfolio of continued efforts on my part. Thank you. I also want to specifically thank Jamie Dillion for being a point of vii contact at Child's Play, and continuing to show interest in this study as well as the rest of my work. To Sue and Kelli, for your support and patience over the years in my many academic endeavors. Thank you for your understanding when I lacked time and energy after long days of classes. Thank you for your encouragement and support at all the conventions and lectures when I worked to present all of my crazy ideas. Thank you specifically to Kelli for helping me log onto her schools computers so that I could get my SPSS work done as well. Dr. Paul Niemiec, I want to thank you for your continued efforts to shape me into the clinician I have become. Thank you for the friendly ear, and the sense of humor every time I needed it to move on. You've been that unwavering constant through my academic endeavors, and your support over the years has meant everything to me. Thank you so much for believing in me, and encouraging me through all these many years. To Megan Blink, for your support of my geek and gamer related work, and your assistance in the development of future projects. Thank you for your time in reading this study in advance, pointing out areas for work, advising from the perspective of a fellow geek/gamer mental health professional, and generally being a constant ear through what have been some challenging times. Your perspective on so many topics has meant a great deal to me, and I know I wouldn't have come along so far so quickly without your help. I appreciate your friendship and am proud to call you a colleague and partner in all of my future endeavors. To Abra McClure I want to share my gratitude for your friendship and your support through the challenging last legs of this journey. Thank you for reviewing my viii work and constantly offering me your encouragement. I can't put into words my appreciation for this connection we share. Being able to bounce ideas back and forth with someone so like minded has made me come to know you as a bright spot in, what has sometimes been, a rather gray experience. To my friends, Greg, Cody, Chris, and Al specifically, thank you for your encouraging words, support, and understanding all the times I couldn’t be there. Thank you for the long game sessions online when I needed to blow off steam, and for always taking my phone calls when I needed an ear. You guys have always been like an extended family, and I’m grateful to have you in my life. Last, but by no means least, I want to express my gratitude to my family. My whole life you've all supported my various passions, and taught me to feel proud of who I was. Specifically to my uncles who spent hours helping me assemble toys and keeping my love of play alive year after year. To my Grandma MaryEllen who always believed in my ability to pursue my dreams, and who encouraged the child in me, even as I grew into an adult. To Sis, who taught me so much about never taking myself so seriously that I couldn't go out of my way to make someone else's day special.

  • Video Games and the Mobilization of Anxiety and Desire
PLAYING THE CRISIS: VIDEO GAMES AND THE MOBILIZATION OF ANXIETY AND DESIRE BY ROBERT MEJIA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Kent A. Ono, Chair Professor John Nerone Professor Clifford Christians Professor Robert A. Brookey, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT This is a critical cultural and political economic analysis of the video game as an engine of global anxiety and desire. Attempting to move beyond conventional studies of the video game as a thing-in-itself, relatively self-contained as a textual, ludic, or even technological (in the narrow sense of the word) phenomenon, I propose that gaming has come to operate as an epistemological imperative that extends beyond the site of gaming in itself. Play and pleasure have come to affect sites of culture and the structural formation of various populations beyond those conceived of as belonging to conventional gaming populations: the workplace, consumer experiences, education, warfare, and even the practice of politics itself, amongst other domains. Indeed, the central claim of this dissertation is that the video game operates with the same political and cultural gravity as that ascribed to the prison by Michel Foucault. That is, just as the prison operated as the discursive site wherein the disciplinary imaginary was honed, so too does digital play operate as that discursive site wherein the ludic imperative has emerged. To make this claim, I have had to move beyond the conventional theoretical frameworks utilized in the analysis of video games.

The Gamer Jump By cthulhu fartagn and SJ-Chan Ver 1.1 Welcome to Korea. It’s not the Korea you are familiar with but it is close enough to the reality for many people. Not so for those who are a part of the Abyss. The Abyss is the generic term for the secret supernatural world hidden from the eyes of normal humans. Within the Abyss, magic is real, as are ancient clans of supernaturally empowered martial artists, and cults devoted to the exploitation of life for the sake of profit. Thankfully, normal humans are protected from these harsh supernatural effects by Gaia, the sentient planet known to many as Earth. Should someone who has entered the Abyss try to use their powers overtly in the normal world, then Gaia will take steps to ensure that they are removed, maintaining this masquerade. It is for this reason that members of the Abyss may call out to Gaia, offering token amounts of mana or chi to create Illusion Barriers, temporary enclosed areas that mirror the world itself but are devoid of any “normal” inhabitants. Within these Illusory Worlds members of the Abyss fight, struggle, deceive and parlay with one another, maintaining a tenuous balance of terrifying supernatural powers that operate on a global scale. The reasons one enters the Abyss are myriad. Some are born into ancient clans and must fight to defend their families status and honor. Others wander by happenstance into an illusion barrier and uncover the secret nature of the world. Still others are kidnapped by unscrupulous people and used as batteries or sacrifices for arcane workings.

  • Intercultural Perspective on Impact of Video Games on Players: Insights from a Systematic Review of Recent Literature

Video games have become so widespread and pervasive that they are now considered a part of the mass media, a common method of storytelling and representation. Despite the massive popularity of video games, their increasing variety, and the diversification of the player base, until very recently little attention was devoted to understanding how playing video games affects the way people think and collaborate across cultures. This paper examines the recent literature regarding the impact of video games on players from an intercultural perspective. Sixty-two studies are identified whose aim is to analyze behavioral-change, content understanding, knowledge acquisition, and perceptional impacts. Their findings suggest that video games have the potential to help to acquire cultural knowledge and develop intercultural literacy, socio-cultural literacy, cultural awareness, self-awareness, and the cultural understanding of different geopolitical spaces, to reinforce or weaken stereotypes, and to some extent also facilitate the development of intercultural skills. The paper provides valuable insights to the scholars, teachers, and practitioners of cultural studies, education, social studies, as well as to the researchers, pointing out areas for future research.

Past research indicates that members of cultural subdivisions favor their own group versus others due to perceived commonalities (Durkheim, 1915; Tajfel, 1970). In gaming culture, the subdivisions of “hardcore” and “casual” games/gamers have become especially salient in recent years.

  • From Girlfriend to Gamer: Negotiating Place in the Hardcore/Casual Divide of Online Video Game Communities
FROM GIRLFRIEND TO GAMER: NEGOTIATING PLACE IN THE HARDCORE/CASUAL DIVIDE OF ONLINE VIDEO GAME COMMUNITIES Erica Kubik A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2010 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Amy Robinson Graduate Faculty Representative Kristine Blair Donald McQuarie ii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor The stereotypical video gamer has traditionally been seen as a young, white, male; even though female gamers have also always been part of video game cultures. Recent changes in the landscape of video games, especially game marketers’ increasing interest in expanding the market, have made the subject of women in gaming more noticeable than ever. This dissertation asked how gender, especially females as a troubling demographic marking difference, shaped video game cultures in the recent past. This dissertation focused primarily on cultures found on the Internet as they related to video game consoles as they took shape during the beginning of the seventh generation of consoles, between 2005 and 2009. Using discourse analysis, this dissertation analyzed the ways gendered speech was used by cultural members to define not only the limits and values of a generalizable video game culture, but also to define the idealized gamer. This dissertation found that video game cultures exhibited the same biases against women that many other cyber/digital cultures employed, as evidenced by feminist scholars of technology. Specifically, female gamers were often perceived as less authoritative of technology than male gamers. This was especially true when the concept “hardcore” was employed to describe the ideals of gaming culture.

TIME TO BE GROWN-UPS ABOUT VIDEO GAMING: THE RISING ESPORTS INDUSTRY AND THE NEED FOR REGULATION Katherine E. Hollist* Ten years ago, eSports were an eccentric pastime primarily enjoyed in South Korea. However, in the past several years, eSports have seen meteoric growth in dozens of markets, attracting tens of millions of viewers each year in the United States, alone. Meanwhile, the players who make up the various teams that play eSports professionally enjoy few protections. The result is that many of these players— whose average ages are between 18 and 22—are experiencing health complications after practicing as much as 14 hours a day to retain their professional status. McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BROWN, MEGAN R., M.A., December 2012, Film Studies A Binary Within the Binary: Machinima as Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation (128 pp.) Director of Thesis: Louis-Georges Schwartz. This thesis traces machinima, films created in real-time from videogame engines, from the exterior toward the interior, focusing on the manner in which the medium functions as a tool for marginalized expression in the face of commercial and corporate inclusion. I contextualize machinima in three distinct contexts: first, machinima as historiography, which allows its minority creators to articulate and distribute their interpretation of national and international events without mass media interference. Second, machinima as a form of fan fiction, in which filmmakers blur the line between consumers and producers, a feature which is slowly being warped as videogame studios begin to incorporate machinima into marketing techniques. Finally, the comparison between psychoanalytic film theory, which explains the psychological motivations behind cinema's appeal, applied to videogames and their resulting machinima, which knowingly disregard established theory and create agency through parody.
