Knut Kristian Langva Døscher German Reprisals in Norway During the Second World War Master’s thesis in Historie Supervisor: Jonas Scherner Trondheim, May 2017 Norwegian University of Science and Technology Preface and acknowledgements The process for finding the topic I wanted to write about for my master's thesis was a long one. It began with narrowing down my wide field of interests to the Norwegian resistance movement. This was done through several discussions with professors at the historical institute of NTNU. Via further discussions with Frode Færøy, associate professor at The Norwegian Home Front Museum, I got it narrowed down to reprisals, and the cases and questions this thesis tackles. First, I would like to thank my supervisor, Jonas Scherner, for his guidance throughout the process of writing my thesis. I wish also to thank Frode Færøy, Ivar Kraglund and the other helpful people at the Norwegian Home Front Museum for their help in seeking out previous research and sources, and providing opportunity to discuss my findings. I would like to thank my mother, Gunvor, for her good help in reading through the thesis, helping me spot repetitions, and providing a helpful discussion partner. Thanks go also to my girlfriend, Sigrid, for being supportive during the entire process, and especially towards the end. I would also like to thank her for her help with form and syntax. I would like to thank Joachim Rønneberg, for helping me establish the source of some of the information regarding the aftermath of the heavy water raid. I also thank Berit Nøkleby for her help with making sense of some contradictory claims by various sources.

British Secret Services in Sweden 1939-41 Organisation, Activities and Achievements Jan Solberg Master Thesis History UNIVERSITY OF OSLO 10 May 2019 © Jan Solberg 2019 British Secret Services in Sweden 1939-41 – Organisation, Activities and Achievements http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Reprosentralen, University of Oslo Acknowledgement1 Since I met SOE agent Armand Trønnes many years ago, I have been curious about what happened in Stockholm during the Second World War, and this master thesis in history gave me the opportunity to find out. Professor Emeritus Even Lange helped me choose this topic, and my patient and very helpful tutor Professor Øystein Sørensen has kept on challenging me making research questions and conclusions as clear as possible. During the last two years I have received encouragement and help from Ambassador David Cairns, the professors Janne Flyghed, Tore Pryser, Knud Jespersen and Michael Goodman, the former Chief Historian Gillian Bennett, dr philos Trond Spurkeland and John Latham. Dr Tony Insall has given me some very valuable comments on a draft text, of which I am most grateful. A very special thanks to Robert Pearson, Trevor Baker and Steven Kippax for their tremendous insight of the British archive system and helping me to access important files, documentation and books. The writing and the analysis are my own, including the full responsibility for possible errors and the conclusions I have drawn. The story told in this thesis is dedicated to my father Thorleif, and his friend Armand, that fought so strongly for the liberation and freedom of Norway. If they still had been around, I hope they would have found my text interesting.

  • The Forgotten Army
The Forgotten Army The Norwegian Army-in-exile 1940-1945 Malik Christoffer Olsen Spring 2020 Master's thesis in Peace and Conflict Studies, Department of Archeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo Word Count: 33590 All of us who, by the game of destiny, would become the main actors during the war years will someday be brought before the court of history. This verdict of history is unlikely to be the same as the one we are inclined to render today. The picture of what has happened in these years is incomplete and will continue to be so, but out of all this obscurity rises today and will always rise the image of men who had their own time’s and will have the future’s esteem and love. — Otto Ruge at the funeral of Carl Gustav Fleischer, 23 October 19451 1 “General Fleischers siste ferd”, Arbeiderbladet, 24 October 1945 (my translation). 1 Summary Having been forced to leave Norway in early June 1940, Norwegian authorities decided to continue the fight against the Germans from the UK. The policy the Government settled on, however, was to contribute to the war effort primarily by making use of the naval and air forces at its disposal. Meanwhile, the Army would be given a low priority, barely having reached a size of 4,000 by the end of the war. This thesis looks at the decisions and factors that influenced the creation, organisation and employment of the Norwegian Army-in-exile. The questions it seeks to answer is why the Army remained numerically small in size, why it was barely used in combat operations and whether this was a continuation of Norwegian defence policy in the interwar years.

Andreas Snildal An Anti-Semitic Slaughter Law? The Origins of the Norwegian Prohibition of Jewish Religious Slaughter c. 1890–1930 Dissertation for the Degree of Philosophiae Doctor Faculty of Humanities, University of Oslo 2014 2 Acknowledgements I would like to extend my gratitude to my supervisor, Professor Einhart Lorenz, who first suggested the Norwegian controversy on Jewish religious slaughter as a suiting theme for a doctoral dissertation. Without his support and guidance, the present dissertation could not have been written. I also thank Lars Lien of the Center for Studies of the Holocaust and Religious Minorities, Oslo, for generously sharing with me some of the source material collected in connection with his own doctoral work. The Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History has offered me excellent working conditions for three years, and I would thank in particular Professor Gro Hagemann for encouragement and not least for thought-provoking thesis seminars. A highlight in this respect was the seminar that she arranged at the Centre Franco-Norvégien en Sciences Sociales et Humaines in Paris in September 2012. I would also like to thank the Centre and its staff for having hosted me on other occasions. Fellow doctoral candidates at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History have made these past three years both socially and scholarly stimulating. In this regard, I am indebted particularly to Chalak Kaveh and Margaretha Adriana van Es, whose comments on my drafts have been of great help. ‘Extra- curricular’ projects conducted together with friends and former colleagues Ernst Hugo Bjerke and Tor Ivar Hansen have been welcome diversions from dissertation work.
