  • Dutch Military Landscapes Heritage and Archaeology on WWII Conflict Sites
Dutch Military Landscapes Heritage and Archaeology on WWII conflict sites Max VAN DER SCHRIEK Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Abstract: In the Netherlands, archaeological research concerning World War II (WWII) is not very well explored compared with the neighboring countries. Its key methodologies were developed already in the 1980s in the United States, where both specialized field techniques (such as advanced metal detectors) and methods for analysis like Geographical Information Systems (GIS) were administered to locate specific artefacts and to map and reconstruct military strategies and other war events. Dutch (conflict) archaeologists still need to develop, practice and reflect international developments in the subject area to learn from the experiences of colleagues abroad. Individual archaeologists participated in the research out of personal interest and/or a particular personal commitment to the features and artefacts they came across during excavations. However, there are still large differences in the approach to the archaeology of WWII between the various commercial excavation companies, provincial administration and municipalities. Even when recording has been systematically undertaken, there have sometimes been administrative, conservation, and legal difficulties in dealing with WWII conflict sites in the Netherlands. Modern Conflict Archaeology plays a vital role with regard to the preservation of these sites and relics. There are several non-invasive approaches and techniques which we can use without any juridical problems, for example KOCOA (Key terrain, Obstacles, Cover and concealment, Observation and fields of fire, Avenues of approach), an established approach to military analysis, and the application of LiDAR (Li ght Detection And Ranging), a remote sensing technology which can provide a detailed digital elevation model of a landscape.

  • "Jay" a True Story of a Scout in Times of War
"Jay" A true story of a Scout in times of War This article was firstly published on http://history.scoutingradio.net/JayFiles/Jay.htm Colin Walker is the editor of this site Scouting Milestones. His introduction to the article reads: Piet Kroonenberg is [was F.K.] the Historical Consultant to the European Scout Committee, and was awarded the Bronze Wolf in 1996 for his outstanding contribution to International Scouting. His books The Forgotten Move- ments and The Undaunted [ 1 & 2 F.K.], as well as numerous articles, chronicle the history of Scouting in Europe. Piet writes [wrote F.K.] with the authority of having been active in Scouting since before the Dutch World Jambo- ree in 1937. “J” is a gripping and significant account of one Scout’s experiences in Nazi-occupied Holland. Because of the terri- ble events of the Second World War, he became a Courier for the Resistance, or Dutch Underground, and armed Resistance Fighter, a translator and navigator to both the British and Canadian Armies of Liberation and through it all in his later years, a life-long Scout. To protect his identity, the author used the code word “J” in his story. In this narrative for ease of reading, the name “Jay” has been substituted. Scouting Milestones is proud to have been chosen by Piet Kroonenberg as a vehicle for this exciting and im- portant work. It is published here for the first time. This is a true story. These events really happened. “J” is a real person.1 Prologue From May 15th, 1940 to May 5th, 1945 German forces occupied the Kingdom of the Nether- lands.

On Early Bird offer with this Booklist at £18.00 saving £10 from the full published price. Order No: 27328. This book, the first in a series of British Army ‘Guides’, deals with the numbered regiments that existed between 1751, when the British infantry was ordered to discard their colonels’ names as titles and be known in future by number only (1st Regiment of Foot, 2nd Regiment of Foot, etc), and 1881 when numerical designations were replaced by the now familiar territorial names such as the Hampshire Regiment or Middlesex Regiment. The book provides the formation date of each regiment, names of colonels prior to 1751, changes of title, battle honours awarded before 1881 and brief descriptions of uniform and badges worn. Helpful to the collector will be the badge authorisation dates included. With a view to further research, details of important published regimental histories have been noted. The numbering of infantry regiments reached 135 but, come the reforms of 1881, only 109 were still in existence.

As we move into the final year of the centenary of the end of WW1 our head guide Paul Reed has created a selection of special anniversary event tours plus new tours covering some of the major final campaign battles. We also have an expanded collection of WW2 tours some of which cover historical events around the end of the war and the aftermath of the Cold War. Further afield we are pleased to introduce a brand new Vietnam tour covering the harrowing events of that long campaign. A century after WW1 and some 75 years since WW2, the debt we owe to those generations remains strong and the legacy of Remembrance they have left us prompts many who travel on our Battlefield Tours to ask more: who is the solider in that faded photo at home? What was that name on the local war memorial? What did grandad do, and how did his war fit into the bigger picture? Rhine Cycle Route – from Arnhem to Rotterdam - 6 dagen DUTCH BIKETOURS - EMAIL: [email protected] - TELEPHONE +31 (0)24 3244712 - WWW.DUTCH-BIKETOURS.COM Rhine Cycle Route – from Arnhem to Rotterdam 6 days, € 499 Introduction The Rhine Cycle Route is over 1200 km long and traverses many countries. It is described in parts in four Bikeline cycling guides. In our new Rhine Route, we will follow the Bikeline from Arnhem to Rotterdam. It is a varied route past historical places, beautiful fortified towns and typical Dutch polder landscapes. Day to Day Day 1 Arrival in Arnhem The start of this route is in Arnhem, known for the Battle of Arnhem in WWII. Today it boasts a great zoo, a wonderful open air museum and lovely Sonsbeek Park. Arnhem is a big city located at a stone’s throw from two National Parks: Hoge Veluwe and Veluwezoom. In Arnhem you can choose whether to stay at a hotel in the city centre or outside the city at the foot of Veluwezoom National Park (free parking). Day 2 Arnhem – Wijk bij Duurstede 60 km A diverse trip through the woods of Veluwezoom, past a 52-meter high hill called Grebbeberg. Military cemeteries bear witness to the heavy fighting that went on during WWII. In the Netherlands the Rhine divides into numerous rivers that go by different names and now you will follow the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine) to Amerongen Castle surrounded by gardens. Today’s destination is Wijk bij Duurstede. Around 800 AD, when it was known as Dorestad, it was the most important Northern European centre of trade.
