Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The present study Is an attempt to examine critically the Sinhalese puristic movement extending from the 1920's to 1970 » which was inaugurated by Munidasa Kumaratunga and had as its objective the resuscitation in its wholeness of* the framework of classical Sinhalese grammar and style. A brief dis­ cussion of the nature of Sinhalese diglossia with occasional relevant reference to other diglossic situations is included in chapter I both to illus­ trate the general character of Sinhalese and to show how it could b© conducive to the rise and continuance of puristic endeavour. The same chapter also presents a thumbnail sketch of the history of Sinhalese in order to establish the historical origins of the dichotomy existing between written and spoken Sinha­ lese. The second chapter discusses the historical and linguistic background from the end of the fif­ teenth century which brings to an end the classical period of Sinhalese writing, and which the modern purists regarded as incepting a period of linguistic decadence. The first beginnings of puristic reviva­ lism can be seen in the latter half of the eighteenth century and much of the nineteenth century with their nativistic tendency. These are dealt with in chapter Ill, Chapter IV Is devoted to discussing the emer­ gence of Kumaratunga, his linguistic objectives and the inception of his Hefa Havula (Pure Sinhalese Fraternity). The fraternity’s conception of lang­ uage and its proper development together with its definition of grammar and correctness are taken into consideration in chapter V. Chapter VI is an ana­ lysis of the grammatical works of the movement which were designed to teach the Helese doctrine of per­ fection. The activities of the followers of Kumara­ tunga and their zealous endeavour to propagate his linguistic credo are dealt with in chapter VII, The final chapter discusses, firstly, the recent attempt of the Hefa Havula to obtain authoritative recogni­ tion of its special linguistic features by using governmental backing to get them introduced into the state—sponsored Standard Sinhalese Grammar and the series of Sinhalese school text books. Secondly, it discusses the causes which led to the decline and of dying out/the Hela movement. Two appendices are Included to illustrate some of the points discussed. In a literate society, especially in one that is educated to a know­ ledge and an appreciation of the writings of the past, the written and the spoken language may develop at different rates and may come to diverge from one another considerably in vocabulary and grammar. The longer the period during which a language has been committed to writing (and used for literary activities) the greater may be the discrepancy between the two registers. Languages of these characteristics are parti­ cularly vulnerable to puristic endeavours. The reasons for this are obvious. Firstly, written records have a comparatively greater degree of permanence and subse­ quent writers tend to look upon them as models of 9 excellence, particularly in the idiom and style. Being tangible records which are available for such reference, written works have a tendency to impose restrictions on the normal linguistic evolution that takes place in any speech community. In languages which possess a lengthy literary tradition, therefore, it is possible to discern some cleavage between the language of literature and the spoken language of the people in question. The types of cleavages that can arise with the advent of the lite- rary activity have been classified by M.W, Sugathapala De Silva in 1967 and more fully in 1975#^ In order to establish the place that Sinhalese oocupies among languages which are characterized by such cleavages, it is pertinent to give here a brief summary of De Silva's thesis. From the point of view of the relationship that obtains between spoken and written languages, he makes a five-fold classification to which he has given the following names: (i) congruent type, (ii) restricted standard type, (iii) inter-regional standard type, (lv) graphic standard type and (v) divergent 1# M. ¥. Being the product of writing for the first time what he calls congruent relationship naturally implies the absence of a literary tradition and therefore this particular type need not detain us here. In the course of time the written language either in its grammar and style or in its manner of graphical representation of sound or in both may correspond to the linguistic habits obtaining in a particular part of the wider linguistic community, in which case the relationship may be called a restricted standard type; or it may correspond to a neutral standard speech equally shared by all educated speakers in which case the relationship might reflect an inter-regional standard. In the case of Chinese where the written language is capable of representing, because of its non-phonetic character of representa­ tion, all forms of speech regardless of their phonetic 1. It is all the more of an issue when the texts in question are from a language ancient and quite unlike our own. Most of the texts on which this thesis are based were written in two languages: the earliest texts of Buddhism were written in a simplified form of Sanskrit called Pali, and most Indian texts of Madhyamika were written in either classical or “hybrid” Sanskrit. Terms in these two languages are often different but recognizable, e.g. “dhamma” in Pali and “dharma” in Sanskrit. For the sake of coherency, all such terms are given in their Sanskrit form, even when that may entail changing a term when presenting a quote from Pali. Since this thesis is not intended to be a specialized research document for a select audience, terms have been translated whenever possible,even when the subtletiesof the Sanskrit term are lost in translation.In a research paper as limited as this, those subtleties are often almost irrelevant.For example, it is sufficient to translate “dharma” as either “Law” or “elements” without delving into its multiplicity of meanings in Sanskrit. Only four terms have been left consistently untranslated. “Karma” and “nirvana” are now to be found in any English dictionary, and so their translation or italicization is unnecessary. Similarly, “Buddha,” while literally a Sanskrit term meaning “awakened,” is left untranslated and unitalicized due to its titular nature and its familiarity.

    Proposal for the Generation Panel for the Sinhala Script Label Generation Ruleset for the Root Zone 1 General information Sinhala belongs to the Indo-European language family with its roots deeply associated with Indo-Aryan sub family to which the languages such as Persian and Hindi belong. Although it is not very clear whether people in Sri Lanka spoke a dialect of Prakrit at the time of arrival of Buddhism in the island, there is enough evidence that Sinhala evolved from mixing of Sanskrit, Magadi (the language which was spoken in Magada Province of India where Lord Buddha was born) and local language which was spoken by people of Sri Lanka prior to the arrival of Vijaya, the founder of Sinhala Kingdom. It is also surmised that Sinhala had evolved from an ancient variant of Apabramsa (middle Indic) which is known as ‘Elu’. When tracing history of Elu, it was preceded by Hela or Pali Sihala. Sinhala though has close relationships with Indo Aryan languages which are spoken primarily in the north, north eastern and central India, was very much influenced by Tamil which belongs to the Dravidian family of languages. Though Sinhala is related closely to Indic languages, it also has its own unique characteristics: Sinhala has symbols for two vowels which are not found in any other Indic languages in India: ‘æ’ (ඇ) and ‘æ:’ (ඈ). Sinhala script had evolved from Southern Brahmi script from which almost all the Southern Indic Scripts such as Telugu and Oriya had evolved. Later Sinhala was influenced by Pallava Grantha writing of Southern India.

The conference will act as a springboard to understanding how Buddhism can contribute to regulating armed conflict, and what it offers in terms of guidance on the conduct of, and behavior during, war for Buddhist monks and lay persons – the latter including government and military personnel, non-State armed groups and civilians. The conference is concerned with the conduct of armed conflict, and not with the reasons and justifications for it, which fall outside the remit of IHL. In addition to exploring correspondences between IHL and Buddhist ethics, the conference will also explore how Buddhist combatants and communities understand IHL, and where it might align with Buddhist doctrines and practices: similarly, how their experience of armed conflict might be drawn upon to better promote IHL and Buddhist principles, thereby improving conduct of hostilities on the ground.

Rajanikanta Gupta’s ‘Sipahi Juddher Itihas’ and Multiple Faces of Loyalty, Anxiety and Dissatisfaction Ramendrasundar Trivedi (1864 – 1919), one of the great essayists and literary figures in the early decades of the 20 th century Bengal, once mused over his reading experiences in early school days. At the age of eight or nine, as a student of middle Anglo-vernacular school, he came across, in a magazine called ‘Bandhab ’, an article, which stated that quite a few history text books happened to be full of lies and misinformations. A number of books on the histories of Bengal and India, mostly written by eminent English scholars, belonged to this category. He clearly remembered his reaction even after thirty years. “I considered it totally unbelievable that there may be mistakes in the history writings of any English scholar. I was unaware of this side of the human character that great scholars would have written baseless stories, due to their partisanship . Moreover, it appeared to me absolutely ridiculous that the history books which I had to cram in order to avoid the slaps of my teacher contained mistakes” 1. That very article had announced that Rajanikanta Gupta 2 (1849-1900), then an unknown person, had taken up a project to write a comprehensive history of the Sepoy War in India; it would be written in vernacular and it would rectify many misconceptions currently nurtured and propagated by the English historians.     Sinhala attitude to knowledge G.Usvatte-aratchi Some of you may have noticed that I have been a frequent though not a regular part of this audience. I have learnt much and found these lectures full of wit and wisdom. I have often felt guilty that I drank from this seemingly horn of plenty and did not care to refill it. One evening, about two years ago, as my wife and I waited for the lift to go down, someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked me whether I would talk at one of the monthly meetings. I promised Mr.Wickremaratne that I would try to find a theme on which to talk. And there was the nub. I had no theme on which to speak on. I avoided him in those little clever ways we have learnt to dodge people to whom we have promised to deliver but failed. These talks, indeed all good public lectures, have two common features. The speaker must have something new even completely outlandish to say. More important, a talk must interest the audience in variegated ways and at different levels.
