Dionne The Makers Of Canada: Champlain CHAPTER I CHAMPLAIN'S FIRST VOYAGE TO AMERICA SAMUEL CHAMPLAIN, the issue of the marriage of Antoine Champlain and Marguerite Le Roy, was born at Brouage, now Hiers Brouage, a small village in the province of Saintonge, France, in the year 1570, or according to the Biographie Saintongeoise in 1567. His parents belonged to the Catholic religion, as their first names would seem to indicate. When quite young Samuel Champlain was entrusted to the care of the parish priest, who imparted to him the elements of education and instilled his mind with religious principles. His youth appears to have glided quietly away, spent for the most part with his family, and in assisting his father, who was a mariner, in his wanderings upon the sea. The knowledge thus obtained was of great service to him, for after a while he became not only conversant with the life of a mariner, but also with the science of geography and of astronomy. When Samuel Champlain was about twenty years of age, he tendered his services to Marshal d'Aumont, one of the chief commanders of the Catholic army in its expedition against the Huguenots. When the League had done its work and the army was disbanded in 1598, Champlain returned to Brouage, and sought a favourable opportunity to advance his fortune in a manner more agreeable, if possible, to his tastes, and more compatible with his abilities. In the meantime Champlain did not remain idle, for he resolved to find the means of making a voyage to Spain in order "to acquire and cultivate acquaintance, and make a true report to His Majesty (Henry IV) of the particularities which could not be known to any Frenchmen, for the reason that they have not free access there." He left Blavet at the beginning of the month of August, and ten days after he arrived near Cape Finisterre.

Les Nouveaux Mondes juridiques is nothing if not ambitious. Interdisciplinary to the core, geographically expansive, and eager to flout standards of periodization, this collection takes its readers on a tour through connections between law and literature in an age when legal pluralism swept into and transformed the European political imagination. Early encounters with indigenous American societies, of course, triggered the greatest outburst of thought and theorizing about alternative forms of government, the meaning of life under natural law, just war doctrine in a world of hard-to-interpret legal systems, and the juridical status of non-Christians. But, as Lombart’s book demonstrates, these sixteenth-century reflections were rooted in medieval encounters with Islam and the mysterious civilizations of Asia and the Indian Ocean world. Beginning in the late eleventh century with the foundation of Outremer on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, the problem of legal pluralism not only informed specific strains of European writing on matters juridical, anthropological, and religious, it also formed “une matrice dans la production du texte (qu’il soit ou non de fiction)” (p. 9).     BERNARD POTHIER Nicolas Deny s: The Chronology and Historiography of an Acadian Hero The place of honour reserved for Nicolas Denys has been an enviable one. Traditionally, historians of both English-speaking Canada and French-Canada have presented the image, largely, of an honest and virtuous man, steadfast, upright, sincere and tenacious in his determination to secure an honourable livelihood from the Acadian setting he allegedly had come to love. Denys, in short, has been perhaps the most endearing historical figure of Acadia. From the 1950's, however, a large volume of hitherto unknown documents, collateral to his own writings, was brought to light by diligent searchers! Although it became possible from the mid-1950's to reappraise the significance of Denys' career in Acadia, very little in fact was undertaken. This paper proposes to review the career of Nicolas Denys in the light of recent findings, and to relate his activities to New France in the seventeenth century and the development of French trade and commerce overseas. It is proposed as well to review briefly the historiography of Nicolas Denys which, in many respects, has evolved in a manner less dependant upon the rules of historical scholarship than upon the emotions generated by national and reg­ ional pride. II Nicolas Denys' origins are obscure. The family was from Tours or that gen­ eral area where, seemingly, they had been established for several generations? Smith, D.C. *577 microliters is based on the following: Three Assumptions: (see Comments on Assumptions, below) 1. I am included in the population of “average adult males”; 2. The possibility that JAN JANSEN is a direct ancestor of ours through more than one of his children exists but is, herein, ignored. This is not as rare as you may think; I have already found two ancestral couples that we descend from through two of their children; and 3. Each ancestor in a particular generation contributes a fractional amount to our genetic make-up, i.e. “blood” equal to the total number of ancestors in that generation, thus: a. Mom and Dad each contribute exactly 50% to our DNA – 2 people in that generation contribute exactly ½ of the DNA we have; and b. Each of our 4 grandparents contributes exactly ¼, or 25%, of the DNA we have; and so on… Two Numbers: 1. The “average adult male” contains 160 fluid ounces of blood; (and) th 1 2. Jan Jansen is one of our 8,192 11 -great-grandparents therefore he contributes /8192 to our genetic make-up. & Three Calculations: 1 1. /8192 of 160 fluid ounces = 0.0195 fluid ounces; 2. 0.0195 fluid ounces = 0.576684 milliliters; and finally, 3. 0.576684 ≈ 577 microliters. Comments on Assumptions: 1. Since it is a given that I am better than average, there may be some adjustment to the amount of blood I actually have; unfortunately whether this adjustment is up or down has not been, to my vast knowledge, adequately explored; 2.
