The writer deals with the need for a full bishopric [in Canada], the necessity to erect his parish churches canonically, the establishment of the Séminaire de Québec. Six minor clerics [Jean Caignet, Pierre Francheville, Pierre-Paul Gagnon, Charles-Amador Martin, Louis Petit, Louis Soumande] are already in the Séminaire. One of them [Jean Caignet] has already been ordained priest. When they are ready, Indians too will be considered for priesthood. The writer recalls that two seculars [François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, PSS, Claude Trouvé, PSS] have been sent among Indian enemies. He requests two holy bodies and some indulgences. As to the request of the bishop of Saint-Malo [François de Ville-Montée], suggesting de Neufville [Pierre de Neufville, as missionary in Newfoundland], he would rather employ missionaries of the Séminaire des Missions-Étrangères. The danger is that the bishop of Saint-Malo [François de Ville-Montée] might appoint his own missionaries, as the archbishop of Rouen [Henri de Harlay de Champvallon] has done before, thus jeopardizing the jurisdiction of the Sacred Congregation "de Propaganda Fide." The wruter suggests that Gazil [Michel Gazil de La Bernardière], who is in Rome with the bishop of Heliopolis [François Pallu], be consulted on the matter, since he is certainly well informed. However, Gazil [Michel Gazil de La Bernardière] must be asked to return the original documents or a copy thereof. This move will help reach a solution in the issue pertaining to the erection of the bishopric of Québec. One day earlier the writer tried to contact the addressee, but could not find him. You have in›uenced my diligence by your expressions of praise, both in your own name and in the names of your most learned friends (whom you also have in very large number). As a result, I feel that I am much more eager to pursue the investigation set forth on this subject; I would already have completed it had the abundance of waters from heaven not shown itself opposed to my own watery task. But you should not think that I have been completely idle: indeed, although I was not able to approach for a second time the sources of the Marcia and Claudia, at some distance from me, and not able therefore to follow up my ideas by surer rea- soning, not uselessly, perhaps, will I show you that I have been engaged in the more immediate neighborhood of that aqueduct introduced by Pope Sixtus and called the Acqua Felice from his own name before his ponti‹- 19 Aqueduct Hunting in the Seventeenth Century: Raffaele Fabretti's De aquis et aquaeductibus veteris Romae Harry B.

  • The Irish Catholic Episcopal Corps, 1657 – 1829: a Prosopographical Analysis
THE IRISH CATHOLIC EPISCOPAL CORPS, 1657 – 1829: A PROSOPOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS VOLUME 1 OF 2 BY ERIC A. DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system.

  • Inhabiting New France: Bodies, Environment and the Sacred, C.1632-C.1700
Inhabiting New France: Bodies, Environment and the Sacred, c.1632-c.1700 Robin Macdonald PhD University of York History September 2015 2 Abstract The historiography of colonial and ‘religious’ encounters in New France has tended to focus on encounters between human beings, between ‘colonisers’ and ‘colonised’ or ‘natives’ and ‘newcomers’. This thesis will focus on encounters between people and environment. Drawing on recent anthropology, notably the work of Tim Ingold, it will argue that whilst bodies shaped environment, environment also could shape bodies – and their associated religious practices. Through the examination of a broad variety of source materials – in particular, the Jesuit Relations – this thesis will explore the myriad ways in which the sacred was created and experienced between c.1632 and c.1700. Beginning with the ocean crossing to New France – an area largely unexplored in the historiographical literature – it will argue that right from the outset of a missionary’s journey, his or her practices were shaped by encounters with both humans and non-humans, by weather or the stormy Ocean Sea. Reciprocally, it will argue, missionary bodies and practices could shape these environments. Moving next to the mission terrain, it will analyse a variety spaces – both environmental and imaginary – tracing the slow build up of belief through habitual practices. Finally, it will chart the movement of missionaries and missionary correspondence from New France back to France. It was not only missionaries, it will argue, who could experience

Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2012 ABSTRACT A PLACE UNDER HEAVEN: AMERINDIAN TORTURE AND CULTURAL VIOLENCE IN COLONIAL NEW FRANCE, 1609-1730 Adam Stueck Marquette University, 2012 This doctoral dissertation is entitled, A Place Under Heaven: Amerindian Torture and Cultural Violence in Colonial New France, 1609-1730 . It is an analysis of Amerindian customs of torture by fire, cannibalism, and other forms of cultural violence in New France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Contemporary French writers and many modern historians have described Amerindian customs of torturing, burning, and eating of captives as either a means of military execution, part of an endless cycle of revenge and retribution, or simple blood lust. I argue that Amerindian torture had far more to do with the complex sequence of Amerindian mourning customs, religious beliefs, ideas of space and spatial limits, and a community expression of aggression, as well as a means of revenge. If we better understand the cultural context of Amerindian torture, we see more clearly the process of cultural accommodation in New France.

Periodically I was tossed around by tempestuous waves. But two beacons always pointed me to quiet harbors where I gained valuable insights, developed new perspectives, and acquired new momentum. My advisor and mentor, Josh Piker, has been incredibly generous with his time, ideas, advice, and encouragement. His constructive critique of my thoughts, methodology, and writing (I never realized I was prone to so many split infinitives and unclear antecedents) was a tremendous help to a graduate student beginning his career. In more ways than he probably knows, he remains for me an exemplar of the professional historian I hope to become. And as a barbecue connoisseur, he is particularly worthy of deference and emulation.

Signature: ____________________________________ Name in Full: ____________________________________ Date: ____________________________________ Abstract. Nicolò Isouard (1773-1818) is considered Malta’s national composer. After studies in France and Naples, he returned to his homeland, where from 1794 to 1798 he was an aspiring composer, and employee of the Order of Malta. In 1994 a collection of thirty-three autographs of hitherto unknown sacred music by Isouard appeared at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and I recognised the importance of these manuscripts. My intentions are to provide a précis on the Order, as the sovereign entity ruling Malta at the time, and the sacred music composed for them in their great Conventual Church in Valletta – now St John’s Co-Cathedral. The thesis will provide the background to Isouard’s early career and a complete edition and commentary of all of his sacred music, including additional works found during the research process, and a catalogue of his stage works.
