FACULTY GOLD MEDAL FOR OUTSTANDING Q!JALIFICATIONS FOR THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE In the Annual Circular of the School of Medicine for 1879-80, the following appeared: "To stimulate zealous study among the candidates for graduation the fac­ ulty offers the prize of a handsome gold medal to the graduate who has passed the best competitive examination in medicine and surgery, the same to be determined by the grade marks of his final examination." The faculty gold medal honors a graduate with outstanding scholarly accomplishments and those qualities of humanity and dedication most desirable in a physician.

SHIPLEY, PHD Professor and Chair UHLENHUTH AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ANATOMICAL SCIENCES In recognition of the graduate with the highest academic record in the anatomical sciences. The award honors Dr. Eduard C.A. Uhlenhuth, chair of the Department of Anatomy from 1933 to 1955, an outstanding scientist and demanding professor in the classical academic tradition. (Established in 1956)

DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY (founded in 1807 as the Department of Chemistry), presented by GUISEPPE INESI, MD, PHD Professor and Chair ELIJAH ADAMS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY For the graduate who has achieved an honors grade in the biochemistry and molecu­ lar biology course and has written a paper judged of the highest quality by the faculty of the department. The award honors Dr. Elijah Adams, chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry from 1963 to 1976, who was known for his research in the biosynthesis and metabolism of collagen, proline and hydroxyproline in animals and bacteria, and his dedication as a teacher. (Established in 1985)

THEODORE E. WOODWARD PRIZE IN INTERNAL MEDICINE The highest award in internal medicine to the graduate who has an excellent academ­ ic record in the discipline of internal medicine and has displayed the attributes of compassion and dedication in the care of patients. The prize, endowed by his former students, honors Dr. Woodward, class of 1938 and ninth chair of the Department of Medicine from 1954 to 1981. (Established in 1992)

ERIC MILLER THORN LEONARD M. HUMMEL MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN INTERNAL MEDICINE A gold medal to a graduate with outstanding qualifications in internal medicine, endowed by the family and friends of Dr. Hummel, class of 1934, a Baltimore internist. (Established in 1951)

CHRISTOPHER SEVERINO VACCARI

LOUIS, IDA, AND SAMUEL COHEN AWARD FOR PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES OF SCHOLARSHIP, ABILITY, AND COMPASSION FOR PATIENTS For a graduate with superior scholarship and scientific knowledge of internal medi­ cine and understanding and compassion for patients. The award was endowed by Mr. Morris Cohen, the leading scholar of the class of 1926 until he left the School of Medicine at the end of the sophomore year to enter the family business when his father unexpectedly died. The award was given in honor of the donor's father, sister, and brother. (Established in 1971)

MILTON S. SACKS AWARD IN HEMATOLOGY For the graduate with the most distinguished record in hematology. The award was endowed by the students, colleagues, and friends of Dr. Sacks, class of 1934, a pio­ neer in the development of hematology at the University of Maryland and director of the clinical pathology laboratories of the University of Maryland Medical Center. (Established in 1965)

THEODORE E. WOODWARD AWARD IN PHYSICAL DIAGNOSIS For the sophomore medical student whose performance in physical diagnosis best exemplifies the desirable combination of factual information, clinical skills, and humanity which are characteristics of an accomplished physician. The award honors one of the medical school's most admired teachers who joined the faculty in 1946. (Established in 1982)

ELIZABETH PAYNE IVES DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY AND EXPERIMENTAL THERAPEUTICS (founded in 1807 as the Department of Materia Medica), presented by EDSON X. ALBUQUERQUE, MD, PHD Professor and Chair C. JELLEF CARRAWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PHARMACOLOGY For the graduate who has achieved an honors grade in the medical pharmacology course and has written a paper judged of the highest quality by the faculty of the department. The award honors Dr. Carr, a member of the department faculty from 1937 to 1955. He wrote, with Dr. John C. Krantz, Jr. , a standard text in pharmacology and co-discovered the valuable cardiovascular drug isosorbide dinitrate. (Established in 1990 on the 50th anniversary of Dr. Carr's publication about isosorbide dinitrate.)

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY (founded in 1807 as the Department of Anatomy and Physiology), presented by MORDECAI P. BLAUSTEIN, MD Professor and Chair SHELDON E. GREISMAN PRIZE IN MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY For the graduate with the most distinguished performance in physiology. Dr. Greisman, an emeritus professor of medicine and physiology, had a gift for teaching and was greatly admired by the students. He was especially devoted to the teaching of integrative physiology and pathophysiology. Dr. Greisman's extensive series of lectures on these subjects was one of the highlights of the Year I Medical Physiology Course for many years. (Established in 1990)

BARrON FREDERICK LANE

DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY (founded in 1807), presented by BRUCE E. JARRELL, MD Professor and Chair WAYNE W. BABCOCKAWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SURGERY For a graduate with outstanding qualifications in surgery. This award was endowed by the family and friends of Dr. Babcock, class of 1893, a distinguished surgeon who performed pioneering work on hernia, spinal anesthesia and perineal surgery, and wrote an important textbook of surgery. He was professor of surgery at Temple University and for many years chief surgeon at Samaritan Hospital in Philadelphia. (Established in 1962)

WILHELMSEN PRIZE FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN SURGERY Awarded to the graduate with the highest academic record in surgery in honor of Dr. Wilhelmsen, class of 1959, who also graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. A loyal and devoted alumnus of the University, Dr. Wilhelmsen has continuously provided encouragement to students and graduates in pursuit of excellence. (Established in 1981)

A. BRADLEY GAITHER MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN GENITO-URINARY SURGERY For the graduate who excelled during the senior clerkship in genito-urinary surgery, in honor of Dr. Gaither, a prominent Baltimore urologist. (Established in 1929)

THE SOCIETY FOR ACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE For the senior medical student who has captured the essence of the ideal emergency physician by demonstrating high skill, equanimity, and kindness in an environment which requires quick, clear thinking and action. The awardee understands the exigencies of this specialty which must be met with enthusiasm, tenacity, and skill. The Society salutes the graduating senior who has shown this promise. (Established in 1992)

DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS, GYNECOLOGY AND REPRODUCTIVE SCIENCES (founded in 1812 as the Department of Obstetrics), presented by HUGH MIGHTY, MD Assistant Professor and Interim Chair LOUIS HARRIMAN DOUGLASS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY For the graduating senior with an outstanding academic record and particular interest in obstetrics and gynecology. The Douglass Obstetrical and Gynecological Society established this award to honor the seventh chair of the Department of Obstetrics from 1937 to 1955. After Dr. Douglass's tenure the combined Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was created. Dr. Douglass was a member of the class of 1911 and served an internship and residency at the University of Maryland Hospital from 1911 to 1913. (Established in 1987)

GEETIKA AGRAWALA DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINE (founded in 1833), presented by J. GLENN MORRIS, ]R., MD, MPH & TM Professor and Chair ROBLEY DUNGLISON AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PREVENTIVE MEDICINE For the graduating students who have demonstrated outstanding competence in the fields of preventive medicine and public health. The award commemorates Dr. Robley Dunglison, the first professor of Materia Medica, Therapeutics & Medical Jurisprudence. When this chair was established, the University of Maryland became the first medical school to teach hygiene (or preventive medicine) in the United States. While a member of the faculty, Dr. Dunglison published the first American textbook on preventive medicine. He was the physician to four presidents: Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and Jackson. (Established in 1976)

ABRAHAM LILIENFELD AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EPIDEMIOLOGY & BIOSTATISTICS For the graduating student with outstanding performance in the courses given by the department in the first two years of medical school. Dr. Lilienfeld, a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was one of the pioneers of chronic disease epidemiology in the United States and chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. (Established in 1991)

DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY (founded in 1873), presented by STEVEN BERENSTEIN, MD, PHD Assistant Professor GEORGE FRICK AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN OPHTHALMOLOGY For the graduates who have demonstrated outstanding skills in ophthalmology. The award honors Dr. George Frick, lecturer on clinical medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who published the first treatise on eye disease in America in 1824. (Established in 2001)

DEPARTMENT OF DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY (founded in 1900 as the Department of Roentgenology), presented by PHILIP A. TEMPLETON, MD Professor and Chair JOSEPH E. WHITLEY AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN RADIOLOGY For the graduating student who has performed outstanding research in radiology which has been presented and/or published. This award was endowed by the depart­ ment in honor of Dr. Whitley, chair from 1978 to 1989. Dr. Whitley was devoted to the training of medical students in the practice of his specialty and developed valu­ able teaching aids for their education. (Established in 1995)

DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY (founded in 1915), presented by SANFORD A. STASS, MD Professor and Interim Chair RUDOLF VIRCHOW AWARD FOR RESEARCH IN PATHOLOGY For the graduate who has made an outstanding contribution to research in the field of pathology. The award commemorates Dr. Virchow (1821-1902), professor of pathology in Berlin. Dr. Virchow established the cellular theory of disease, a finding which revolutionized medical science. His discovery was made possible by the devel­ opment of the light microscope and its application to the study of diseased cells. (Established in 1978)

CHARLES L. WISSEMAN, JR., AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MICROBIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY For the student with the highest academic records in microbiology. This award hon­ ors the chair of the department from 1954 to 1986, an authority in the basic science of and the diseases caused by rickettsia. (Established in 1990)

MATTHEW AUGUST KOENIG DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS (founded in 1949), presented by ]AY A. PERMAN, MD Professor and Chair J. EDMUND BRADLEY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PEDIATRICS For the graduate with both a leading academic record in pediatrics and the character­ istics most admired in a pediatrician. The award was endowed by the Department of Pediatrics to honor Dr. Bradley, the first full-time chair from 1949 to 1968. Dr. Bradley was an outstanding and caring teacher who was always available to students. (Established in 1969)

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY (founded in 1952), presented by ANrnoNY F. LEHMAN, MD Professor and Chair JACOB FINESINGERAWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PSYCHIATRY For the graduate who has demonstrated outstanding skills in general psychiatry. The award honors Dr. Finesinger, the founding chair of the Department of Psychiatry from 1952 to 1959, who was particularly dedicated to the teaching of medical students. (Established in 1960)

EUGENE B. BRODY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PSYCHOTHERAPY For a graduate with outstanding skill in psychotherapy, given in honor of the second chair of the Department of Psychiatry from 1959 to 1976. Dr. Brody made impor­ tant contributions to the psychotherapy of schizophrenia. (Established in 1977)

ROBYN LEIGH WECHSLER DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY (founded in 1956), presented by M. JANE MATJASKO, MD Professor and Chair MARTIN HELRICH PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN ANESTHESIOLOGY For the graduate with the highest academic distinction during the senior clerkship in anes­ thesiology. The prize honors Dr. Martin Helrich, chair of the Department of Anesthesiology &om 1956 to 1987, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to anes­ thesiology at the University of Maryland and in the United States. (Established in 1987)

CAMILLE TOPAZ CADE HAMMOND

THE DR. JEREMY HALLISEY AWARD For the graduate pursuing a career in anesthesiology who best demonstrates the quality of compassion. The prize honors the memory of Dr. Jeremy Hallisey; who completed his residency at the University of Maryland in 1980. Dr. Hallisey was Chief of Anesthesiology at Mercy Medical Center. (Established in 1998)

DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY (founded in 1963), presented by KENNETH P. jOHNSON, MD Professor and Chair WILLIAM ALEXANDER HAMMOND AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN NEUROLOGY For the graduate with outstanding accomplishments in neurology. The award recognizes the contributions to neurology of Dr. Hammond, the Union Surgeon General during the Civil War, and &om 1859 to 1861 a member of the faculty of the School of Medicine. He was one of the founding members of the American Neurological Association in 1873. (Established in 1972)

EDWARD J. KOWALEWSKI AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN FAMILY PRACTICE For the fourth-year student who has demonstrated special interest and high academic achievement in family practice. Dr. Kowalewski was the founding chair of the Department of Family Medicine from 1972 to 1990. (Established in 1991)

EUGENE SYDNEY BERESTON AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN DERMATOLOGY For the graduate with outstanding accomplishments and interest in dermatology. The award was founded on the 75th birthday of Dr. Bereston, class of 1937, by his daughter, Mrs. Richard I. Katz, and her family. Dr. Bereston, a clinical professor at Maryland, taught students and house officers and had a continuing interest in diagnostic and clinical mycology. (Established in 1989)

These awards are intended to spur dialogue, debate and activities related to graduating scientifically excellent, as well as compassionate, physicians.

WILLIAM D. KAPLAN, MD AWARD* For the graduate who best combines humanism with the clinical study of medicine. The award honors Dr. Kaplan, class of 1969, an authority on brain tumor imaging, chief of oncologic nuclear medicine at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, and professor of radiology at the Harvard Medical School. A gifted teacher, Dr. Kaplan emphasized the interactions between physician and patient. He was widely recognized for his ability to relieve the anxiety of his patients and provide compassionate care. Dr. Barnett graduated cum laude with the class of 1971 and received the William Alexander Hammond Award for Excellence in Neurology at graduation. She started her residency in neurology at the University of Maryland Hospital in 1972 and, subsequently, became a member of the facul­ ty. Dr. Barnett died in 1983, and the fellowship was established the following year.
