ROUND 6. 27 Jan. & 3 Feb. . PARNELL vs. AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY at Shore Road Reserve1..

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY 352/8 dec. (94) C Ansell 134 (274), T Wells 62 (145), FOW 27, 128, 221, 267, 289, 302, 313, 330, Dean van Deventer 13 3 40 1 Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 12 0 60 1 Dave Goddard 19 1 65 4 Josh Fisher 9 0 43 0 Mitch McCann 31 5 98 1 Brad Rodden 10 1 36 1 PARNELL 6/0 To be continued next Saturday, 3 February DAY 1. University won the toss and, totally expectedly, chose to bat. Perfect conditions, fine and warm and a pitch full of runs as it has been all season despite the vageries of the weather. Conor Ansell, University’s no. 3 (& opener for EDCA Years 12/13 and Auckland U17s) totally dominated Day 1. with his 134. Supported initially by Tom Wells, Varsity’s Leicestershire professional, Conor batted most of the day, over 4 and a half hours, continuing his recent excellent form for EDCA Years 12/13 and for Auckland Under 19s. Importantly for his team, Ansell did not throw his away on reaching 100 – he carried on relentlessly and our bowlers had an extremely hard day at the office.

Ganesh trying from both ends. Tom Wells, the Leicester professional is the non striker in photo 1. Ganesh at least had an early success in having English opener,Joe Barrett, caught behind by Ben Horne – 27/1. Barrett had attended St Edwards School, Oxford – his coach there was Rex Hooton and, in his time at the School scored an amazing 3533 runs incl. 931 in 2014, his last year there.

. Dean, more economical but no success until very late in the day when he captured the 8th and last wicket to fall with another caught behind. Dean tried all the tricks going from pace to the odd slower ball – Craig S. thought that 2. above reminded him of Shane Warne

Josh Fisher bowled without any luck and it needed the Skipper to break the 2nd wicket partnership of 101 – Wells caught by Andy Lane, Dave Goddard was the pick of our bowlers finishing with 4/65 including, eventually, Ansell’s wicket – lbw, 6th out with the total 302

Brad Rodden – no luck to Ansell but did achieve a caught and bowled – here about to catch Varsity’s no. 4, Muhammed, a 37 year old, who’s 23 was off 83 balls. Muhammed is reputed to have played 12 years 1st Class cricket in Pakistan hitting 8 centuries.

A scramble behind the stumps for Ben Horne, back from the Aces Meantime, Elliot Foster, leading ‘keeper for the Grade (13 catches, 1 stumping) but displaced by Ben Horne’s return, fielded substitute for the injured Ben Rainger. Ben R. had suffered a back spasm and had to leave the field.

Last photo of players but. not least, Mitch McCann, who with his off spin, toiled economically for 31 overs but just 1 wicket (1 & 2 above)

Day 2 – it promises to be a most interesting contest. Just hoping that the weather doesn’t create it’s predicted havoc. Chasing 352 is a huge task but we do have an excellent, and in form, line-up. Look forward to seeing a large crowd at Shore Road, weather permitting.

Amongst the spectators – Hon Vice President Peter McCormack with Dof C and Acting Head Coach, Phil Horne, and of course, regular attendersChris Horner, Nirrosh, Chey Barnes and James (‘Sleeves’) Bennett – latter 4 suitably attired for the heat.

Roy manning the scorebook with Eden Roskill co-scorer

We lost the toss and were sent into the field on another scorcher of a day and on a batting paradise. After an opening stand of 65 runs we bowled Eden Roskill out for 187, a great effort on the aforementioned road.

1. Toby Baker, back at Parnell after stint at Canterbury University. Harry Miller keeping and Will Ormiston at slip 2. Elliot Jaffe, welcome back from injury Both our opening bowlers, Toby Baker and Elliot Jaffe, collected a wicket each in their return spells. Toby taking 1 for 18 off his six overs and Elliott 1 for 19 off his 6 overs.

We used 7 bowlers in the process but the day belonged to Hamish Robertson. Hamish came on in the 10th over and bowled unchanged producing the extraordinary figures: 27.3 overs 7 maidens 7 for 64 runs A truly amazing spell of endurance bowling in very warm conditions!!

Newcomers to the Reserves – 1. Harry Miller, 2017 AGS and Auckland Under 19 wicketkeeper/batsman 2.Cam Gibbons – ex King’s College 1st XI, Auckland Age groups & former !New Zealand Under 19 rep. Harry and Cam, welcome to Parnell

Our turn at the crease commenced shortly before the afternoon tea break with Callum Douglas 26 runs and Will Ormiston 29 runs putting together a 53 run partnership before Callum was dismissed, a good start. Will was unfortunately run out at the bowlers end after a deflection on to the stumps off a straight drive by Cam Gibbons. We ended the day on 118 for 5 after losing nightwatchman Razin. Jessie Simpson not out on 14 and Captain, Sam Fastier not out on 15, Parnell Reserves needing 76 runs to take first innings points

Congratulations to a fine bowling performance by Hamish Robertson
