Doughnut Worthy Alexis Wyatt Donation Drunk driving awareness has hit Tennessee High School. During the week of April 19-23, the Bristol Tennessee Police and Fire Departments and the junior class sponsored times for students to wear DUI goggles and use the DUI simulator. Firefighters used various tools to demonstrate how they extract a trapped victim from an automobile. Caring teachers and administrators hope these activities will make a positive difference. “I hope that this week somehow convinces students that their driving behavior correlates directly with life and death. I drive by a teen death site everyday; fake flowers in the roadside weeds represent a teenager who is now dead,” says THS teacher Mrs. Sutherland. Her hope matches that of many who have experienced the harmful effects of drunk driving in their life. According to Students Against Drunk Driving statistics, 346 THS students could have possibly consumed Driving Hammered? alcohol in mild to excessive amounts. It takes just one Zach Tuggle drunk driver to kill or be killed. THS is Stepping Up The Limestone Masonry workers have been busy fixing the stair steps outside of the auditorium at the front of Tennessee High School. According to the workers, they will remove the old bricks, clean them, and then reuse them because these bricks are genuine and non- replaceable. “This will keep them [students] from tripping and falling when they run out of school in the afternoon,” worker Heath Springer said. Their work began on April 20, and they are still in the process of removing bricks so that they can re-align them. (August 2012) Jeremy Russell Miller, B.A., University of Arkansas; M.A., University of Arkansas Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Joshua Heuman Dr. Aisha Durham Transgender representations generally distance the transgender characters from the audience as objects of ridicule, fear, and sympathy. This distancing is accomplished through the use of specific narrative conventions and visual codes. In this dissertation, I analyze representations of transgender individuals in popular film comedies, thrillers, and independent dramas. Through a textual analysis of 24 films, I argue that the narrative conventions and visual codes of the films work to prevent identification or connection between the transgender characters and the audience. The purpose of this distancing is to privilege the heteronormative identities of the characters over their transgender identities. This dissertation is grounded in a cultural studies approach to representation as constitutive and constraining and a positional approach to gender that views gender identity as a position taken in a specific social context.

The proms of today are lavish affairs that come complete with hotel ballrooms, live bands, glamorous clothing, and stretch limousines. As the first formal event in the life of a teenager, attendance at the prom is now popularly considered a vital rite of passage to adulthood. Yet, proms were not always so lavish, expensive, or widespread. At one point during their history, proms were actually quite simple affairs. Proms were first mentioned in the high school yearbooks of the 1930s and 1940s, but historians believe they may have existed as early as the late 1800s. Proms first began in the elite colleges of the Northeast, taking their cue from the debutante balls of the rich and well bred. Middle class parents admired the poise and composure of debutantes and their escorts and began to institute formal dances as a means of instilling social skills and etiquette in their children.
