St. Bonaventure Secular St. Bonaventure & St. Elizabeth of Hungary The Poverello Visit our website: http://www.sfostbonaventure-detroit.org Minister’s Letter Dear brothers and sisters, May our Lord’s peace and all good be with you! At this moment we are having a most beautiful summer. Thanks be to God! Like many of you, I often use the psalms for prayer and meditation. There is one psalm in particular that I like to use during the summer. It is really one of my favorites. It is Psalm 121. It begins: “I lift my eyes to the mountains, from whence does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” [You will have to get your Bible out now and read the rest of it!] I was introduced to this psalm by an Orthodox rabbi I sat next to at a hospice spiritual care providers’ luncheon. Somehow our conversation turned to what we do for the people we visited in the hospital. He told me that when he visited a mother with a newborn baby, he put [what we would call] a holy card in the baby’s crib. He gave me one of these cards. One side was written in Hebrew, the other side in English. It was Psalm 121! I read it over and over again. How beautiful for these to be the first spiritual words encountered by a newborn and his/her mother. How comforting this must be for them! Then I went on retreat to the Retreat Center in Maggie Valley, N.C. with IHM Sister Fran Pokriefka. One day we went on a picnic in the mountains. It was a beautiful summer day, nearing the end of the season; the sky was blue, wild flowers were waning, the soft mountain breeze was exhilarating and the view from the mountain top was exquisite! We spread out our picnic and she brought out a travel Bible and chose a psalm for our prayer. It was Psalm 121. Finally, John and I recently went to the Berkshires in Massachusetts to celebrate the 50th Jubilee of a friend of ours, Fr. Jim Bresnahan, SJ. We had time before the afternoon Mass to have a luncheon picnic on the meandering Mill River in Conway. I set out our picnic items along the shore of the rushing water of this cold, clear, rocky bottomed river. I had my travel Bible and… you guessed it…I recited Psalm 121 — my summer psalm. Then John picked out one of his favorites, but that’s a story for another time! Enjoy your summer, dear ones, remembering to “lift your eyes to the mountains…[our] help really does come from the Lord!” Peace and all good, Janet

Speak Up for the SFO We will begin a new Orientation Class for those who are interested in becoming Secular Franciscans. The series will begin on September 20, 2009 (the Third Sunday of September) at 12 Noon on the Second Floor of the Solanus Casey Center. The two most important factors in people joining our are (1) a personal contact with one of our members, and (2) a personal invitation from a member. So, ’t be shy! Invite people you think would be good Secular Franciscans to join us on September 20th, to get some basic information on the SFO way of life. Don’t forget the most obvious possibilities: your chiildren and grandchildren. 2 The Poverello, August 2009 Brothers and Sisters Joe and my anniversary weekend celebration in Lansing was indescribably super colossal, especially the dinner/dance on Saturday evening. Sixty-four were in attendance, including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren (13 were missing) and 22 other family members and friends. Our immediate family increased from 77 to 78 by the birth of Regan Colleen, a great granddaughter in Maryland. The highlight of the weekend was a Mass at St. Rene Church in Sterling Heights during which we renewed our marriage vows and received a special blessing. To the right, you will find the anniversary photo of Joe and myself, and (below) another of our immediate family. Button, button. Who’s got the button?

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen on Meldrum sponsors a shower program for its guests. Guests may take a shower and afterwards, clean clothes are distributed and the “old” clothes are cleaned. Br. Ray noticed one guest going through the rack of trousers, putting aside those that were missing buttons. So Br. Ray has asked us, sew-ers [not sewers, puh-leez], if we could replace the missing buttons. Of course, the EMB agreed, but we’ve discovered that we don’t have a button box. We’re asking you, our SFO brothers and sisters, to help us collect buttons. Maybe you have some old clothes to discard – we will cut off the buttons with a razor blade. Any other ideas are welcome, too. Contact us, please: The EMB (Eucharistic Mission Band). Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Thanks in advance!

The Poverello, August 2009 5 Rule Reflections for August Article 9

The Virgin Mary, humble servant of the Lord, was open to his every word and call. She was embraced by Francis with indescribable love and declared the protectress and advocate of his family. The Secular Franciscans should express their ardent love for her by imitating her complete self-giving and by praying earnestly and confidently.

Scripture: Matthew 12:48-50; Luke 1:28-38, 41-45, 46-55: John 2:1-11, 19:25-27

For individual meditation:

1. In what concrete ways can you imitate Mary’s total self-giving?

For group sharing:

1. How can you make your personal prayer more earnest and confident?

Prayer for Priests urged by the US Bishops

Dear Lord, we pray that the Blessed Mother wrap her mantle around your priests and through her intercession strengthen them for their ministry. We pray that Mary will guide your priests to follow her own words, “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). May your priests have the heart of St. Joseph, Mary’s most chaste spouse. May the Blessed Mother’s own pierced heart inspire them to embrace all who suffer at the foot of the cross. May your priests be holy, filled with the fire of your love seeking nothing but your greater glory and the salvation of souls. Amen. Saint John Vianney, pray for us.

6 The Poverello, August 2009 Celebrating Patricia Meldrum Pat was born in Detroit on December 25. After attending St. Paul for 12 years, she attended and was graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and then earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Wayne State University. She has three brothers, two of whom live about a half mile from her, and another brother who lives with his family in New York. Pat was employed by the Roseville Community Schools at the high school level, from 1964 to 2000. Pat learned about the from Eleanore Reznich, a deceased member, who was her friend, mentor, spiritual guide, and a constant source of inspiration to her. Pat was professed into the Secular Franciscan Or- der at St. Bonaventure in November 2005. Since October 2006, Pat has done an outstanding job serving as the secretary to the leadership council. Once a month, she assists the hospitality team serving coffee and goodies to those who participate in the Wednesday Healing Service at the Monastery. When she has time, Pat tries to visit a few of our members who are in nursing homes. Pat also serves as a Eucharistic Minister at her , Our Lady of Hope, formerly known as St. Gertrude. She volunteers in the church gift shop on weekends, and helps take care of guests for her parish’s McRest (Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team) week. She prepares and serves food at the Lenten fishfries and is a member of the St. Vincent dePaul Council. In her “spare” time, she enjoys gardening, tennis, traveling, participating in a Thomas Merton reading group and a Bible study group at her parish. Thank you, Pat, for all the behind-the-scenes work you do for our fraternity. We love you, Pat!

White Sales? Think Towel Time

The time has come for this year’s towel project to start up again. As you know, the fraternity collects new towels, hand clothes and face clothes for homeless programs. This year we’ve selected two great destinations: the Shower Program at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen on Meldrum, and the “Open Door” Shower Program sponsored by Holy Trinity Church right here in Detroit. Since August White Sales will soon be appearing in the stores, it might be an opportune time to buy your own towels and, if possible, some for the fratnerity to donate to these programs for the homeless. We intend to tag these towels with our unique badge of solidarity with the First and Second Orders: Detroit Franciscans. We’re planning on delivering them during the Advent Season. Your prayers and help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you all, and thanks especially to Ona Harris Wilson who conceived and created this living corporal work of mercy. The new committee chairs for this project are Carolin Florescue and Melissa Lindow. Drop-offs can be brought to the EMB during regular hours (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 am to 2:00 p.m.), or to the SFO Office on Wednesdays, or brought to our Fraternity gathering on the third Sunday of each month.

8 The Poverello, August 2009 The Many Faces of Caring

Fr. Daniel J. Fox, OFM Cap.

Who doesn’t know and love Detroit native, Fr. Dan Fox? Possessing the proverbial “heart of gold”, he’s the type of person who, unhesitatingly, really would “give you the shirt off his back.” We have been blessed to have had Fr. Dan as the Director of the Solanus Casey Center for the past 6+ years. Fr. Dan has now been entrusted with the care of the parishioners of St. Agnes Church (2500 West River Road) in Sanford, Michigan 48657. Fr. Dan has been especially sensitive and mindful of the bonds linking the Detroit Capuchins with the Secular Franciscans. We wish him Godspeed!

Robert Brindle 9 years old Acute lymphoblastic leukemia

When 8-year-old Robert unwrapped a new Xbox 360 on Christmas morning, his parents immediately realized something was wrong. Robert, who had long coveted the video game console, showed no excitement for the gift. That weekend, Robert developed terrible nosebleeds and was listless. By Tuesday, he wasn’t feeling any better. His doctor ordered blood work, which revealed devastating news — Robert was suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer. The doctor referred him to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. When he and his parents arrived at St. Jude later that evening, they were afraid. “I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact Robert had cancer,” his mother said. But right away, they felt at ease. “Someone was waiting for us,” she said. “They knew who Robert was as soon as we arrived.” Robert started a two-and-a-half year treatment protocol immediately. He takes oral chemotherapy every night, and visits St. Jude once a week for intravenous chemotherapy. Robert is a bright child who often asks his doctors very detailed questions about his treatment. “He trusts them,” said his mom. “The staff is very straight forward and they explain everything to him.”
