HISTORY READING ALTERNATIVES PDF: Caswell 3 Laura Berquist approved sharing this list but because she hasn't reviewed all of these books, she just wanted to make sure it was made clear that it's the work of Deanna Caswell, not MODG. Deanna created lists of all the history books in the 2nd - 5th grade MODG history lesson plans determining reading levels by using what her home state of TN uses: AcceleratedReader level, http://www.arbookfind.com/ . Then she researched alternatives for students who are struggling or want something more advanced. She explains below what the document covers. I think you'll find it very helpful when you're trying to see the grade level for which a particular book is written. If your child is struggling w/the suggested book, you can look for a book more in line w/his reading ability. It's good to have a mix of challenging reads and easy reads. If you are busy and neither you nor an older sibling can sit down to read a suggested book, you can find an alternative book that the child can read. **** The list "MODG Recommendations" is the reading levels for all the books in the syllabi, her originals and alternatives. This is so the parent can identify HER recommendations first and see if they are in the child's level. The lists are long because Laura recommends some series. It's ONLY Laura's listed books. Displaced "Pan-Americans" and the Transformation of the Catholic Church in Philadelphia, 1789-1850 HE REVEREND JOHN HUGHES TOLD A GREAT STORY about the construction of the Roman Catholic church of St. John the Evangelist in Philadelphia. Hughes, the project's major fundraiser, St. John's first pastor, and later archbishop of New York, related that his announcement in 1830 of the plan to build a grand new cornerstone of Catholic life garnered only a lukewarm response from his congregation. Days went by before he received his first donation, from a humble ser- vant, who delivered to the priest a few precious cents from her meager wages. From that moment on, Hughes "never had a doubt of the success" of the building project.1 This lovely anecdote, redolent of New Testament teachings, burnishes one of the principal and lasting images of the Catholic Church in the United States, but it obscures crucial aspects of St. John's construction and the Catholic Church's broader institutional development. From the 1780s to the mid-nineteenth century, a small group of "Pan-Americans," men and women with extensive ties to Latin America and the Caribbean, played a determinative role in the church's transformation in Philadelphia and, as a result, the nation as a whole. Some, their lives thrown into disarray by internecine warfare and eco- nomic upheaval, came to Philadelphia for short periods of time, while others made a permanent home in the city. Here, they met residents with an existing network of economic, political, and cultural ties to the region. This group became embroiled in an intense confrontation over the future of American Catholicism. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract My thesis evaluates the educational practice of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917). Cabrini, a schoolteacher from Lombardy, founded the Institute of Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (MSC) in Codogno, Italy in 1880. When she died, a United States citizen in Chicago, USA, she had established 70 houses in Europe and the Americas. One thousand women had joined the MSC. Her priority was to work with some of the estimated thirteen million Italians who emigrated between 1880 and 1915. The literature review considers the relatively little work in the history of education on Catholic educational practice. The research addresses three questions: 1. How did Mother Cabrini understand Catholic educational practice? 2. How can Mother Cabrini’s understanding of Catholic educational practice be seen in the work of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? 3. How far did Mother Cabrini develop a coherent approach to Catholic educational practice? A multiple case study approach is used, focussing on the educational practice of Cabrini and the MSC in Rome, London and New Orleans, within the transnational context of their Institute. -

The intellectuals featured in the course each contributed to the evolution of black political thought, and posited social criticisms designed to undermine racial and gender oppression, and labor exploitation around the world. This group of black intellectuals' work will be analyzed paying close attention to the way that each intellectual inverts dominant intellectual trends, and/or uses emerging social scientific disciplines, and/or technologies to counter racism, sexism, and classism. This seminar is designed to facilitate an understanding of the black intellectual tradition that has emerged as a result of African American thinkers’ attempts to develop a response to, and understanding of, the black condition. This course explores of a wide range of primary and secondary sources from several different periods, offering students opportunity to explore the lives and works some of the most important black intellectuals. We will also consider the way that period-specific intellectual phenomenon—such as Modernism, Marxism, Pan-Africanism and Feminism— combined with a host of social realities to shape and reshape black thought.
