Lewis Institute Dear Friends, n the previous issue of Knowing & Doing, I noted, “Much of what is called Christi- anity in America is nominal. And even worse, much of what is authentic is quite Ishallow.” A quick look at some recent research helps to clarify the picture. The National Study of Youth and Religion found that the religious view of many teenagers consists of this set of beliefs: “1. A god exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth. 2. God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions. 3. The central goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself. 4. God does not need to be particu- larly involved in one’s life, except when God is needed to resolve a problem. 5. Good people go to heaven when they die.” This set of beliefs has been dubbed “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism,” and kids develop much of it from the values and behavior of their parents. What are some of the values and beliefs of American adults that give rise to such thinking among kids? The January 2009 issue of The Barna Update reports that the rampant individualism in American culture has led to many people simply “picking and choosing” what they like in the Bible and discarding the rest. Further, millions of people hold religious beliefs that are contradictory. And this is not surprising, given that the ways in which beliefs are developed today are also changing. People spend less time reading the Bible and listening to sermons and teaching, and rely more on emotions, “dialog, self-reflection, and observation.” Much more could be said, but this snapshot highlights a couple of indicators of the spiritually challenging times in which we are living. Clearly, those who love Jesus Christ and want to see him glorified and his church flourishing cannot continue with business as usual. In the next issue of Knowing & Doing, we will look at some of the time-honored steps we can take to move in that direction. Abraham: When God told Abraham that he and Sarah would bear a child he fell on his face and laughed because he was 100 years old and Sarah was 90. Sarah: She too laughed and when God asked Abraham why she laughed he reminded Abraham that nothing was too hard for the Lord. The nuns sent her to their convent in India where she took her final vows in 1937. In 1948 she left the convent to serve the poorest people in Calcutta. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. The nuns who continue her work are known as the Sisters of Charity. Teresa was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church in 2003, but has not yet been canonized, so she has no day of remembrance. NOTES ON THE MATERIAL Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s story sits on a small, shallow tray about 8" square, with sides about 2" deep. It has a groove in the front to slide the booklet in so the chil- dren can see it when they approach the Mystery of Pentecost shelf. The booklet is 4.25" x 5.5". The cover has an image of Teresa on it that matches the figure used in the introductory lessons on the communion of saints.

    Biography Mother Teresa Mother Teresa (1910-1997) was a Roman Catholic nun, who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world. She spent many years in Calcutta, India where she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation devoted to helping those in great need. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and has become a symbol of charitable selfless work. She was beatified in 2003, the first step on the path to sainthood, within the Catholic church. “It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.” – Mother Teresa Short Biography Mother Teresa Mother Teresa was born, 1910, in Skopje, capital of the Republic of Macedonia. Little is known about her early life, but at a young age she felt a calling to be a nun and serve through helping the poor. At the age of 18 she was given permission to join a group of nuns in Ireland. After a few months of training, with the Sisters of Loreto, she was then given permission to travel to India. She took her formal religious vows in 1931, and chose to be named after St Therese of Lisieux – the patron saint of missionaries. On her arrival in India, she began by working as a teacher, however the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression on her; and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”.
