All other statements will be provided ONLY UPON REQUEST. 5:00 pm Sophia Ahumada & Family 4 | ST MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT PRAYER & REFLECTION A Reflection on the Gospel of Today Today the Church invites us to reflect and to transform our reflections into action. God’s Word encourages us to discover the meaning of this season of Lent, going beyond the symbol of ashes. There are three important practices suggested for our spiritual growth: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. Jesus in today’s Gospel calls us to these practices while, at the same time, criticizing the hypocrisy displayed by the spiritual leaders of his time. The Gospel call directs us to orient our hearts toward our neighbors as true ambassadors of Christ’s love. The prophets in the First Testament had announced that the most pleasing sacrifice to the Lord consisted in attention and service rendered to orphans and widows, to the handicapped and homeless. This should also be our sacrifice as we begin Lent: through prayer, to come closer to him who already lives among us; through almsgiving, to value the gift of our human relationships, as we did during last year’s pandemic situation, accumulating only what we need, and freely sharing with the needy; and through fasting, to grow in our gratitude for the gifts we receive in our daily lives that aid us in overcoming ambitions, and allowing us to work for others in the Lord’s vineyard. Abraham: When God told Abraham that he and Sarah would bear a child he fell on his face and laughed because he was 100 years old and Sarah was 90. Sarah: She too laughed and when God asked Abraham why she laughed he reminded Abraham that nothing was too hard for the Lord. The nuns sent her to their convent in India where she took her final vows in 1937. In 1948 she left the convent to serve the poorest people in Calcutta. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. The nuns who continue her work are known as the Sisters of Charity. Teresa was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church in 2003, but has not yet been canonized, so she has no day of remembrance. NOTES ON THE MATERIAL Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s story sits on a small, shallow tray about 8" square, with sides about 2" deep. It has a groove in the front to slide the booklet in so the chil- dren can see it when they approach the Mystery of Pentecost shelf. The booklet is 4.25" x 5.5". The cover has an image of Teresa on it that matches the figure used in the introductory lessons on the communion of saints.

    Biography Mother Teresa Mother Teresa (1910-1997) was a Roman Catholic nun, who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world. She spent many years in Calcutta, India where she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation devoted to helping those in great need. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and has become a symbol of charitable selfless work. She was beatified in 2003, the first step on the path to sainthood, within the Catholic church. “It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.” – Mother Teresa Short Biography Mother Teresa Mother Teresa was born, 1910, in Skopje, capital of the Republic of Macedonia. Little is known about her early life, but at a young age she felt a calling to be a nun and serve through helping the poor. At the age of 18 she was given permission to join a group of nuns in Ireland. After a few months of training, with the Sisters of Loreto, she was then given permission to travel to India. She took her formal religious vows in 1931, and chose to be named after St Therese of Lisieux – the patron saint of missionaries. On her arrival in India, she began by working as a teacher, however the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression on her; and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”.

I think some of you already have got it - so we will pray together.2 Let us thank God for the opportunity that we all have together today, for this gift of peace that reminds us that we have been created to live that peace, and Jesus became man to bring that good news to the poor. He being God became man in all things like us except sin, and he proclaimed very clearly that he had come to give the good news. The news was peace to all of good will and this is something that we all want - the peace of heart - and God loved the world so much that he gave his son - it was a giving - it is as much as if to say it hurt God to give, because he loved the world so much that he gave his son, and he gave him to Virgin Mary, and what did she do with him? As soon as he came in her life - immediately she went in haste to give that good news, and as she came into the house of her cousin, the child - the unborn child - the child in the womb of Elizabeth, leapt with joy.

"The fruit of silence is prayer; the fruit of prayer is faith; the fruit of faith is love; the fruit of love is service; the fruit of service is peace" (Collopy, 31). Service and love for the destitute were Mother Teresa's methods to bring the world one step closer to peace. The extraordinary nun lived a life of self-sacrifice within the Catholic Church. She sacrificed her health, comfort, family and all worldly goods to dedicate her every breath to improving the lives of the poor in India, Africa, Eastern Europe and the rest of the world. Her spirituality and duty to God strengthened her relentless actions against hate and poverty.
