2 Scottish Rite News • Winter 2018 2018 FALL REUNION

2018 Fall Reunion The 2018 Fall Reunion was a huge success for the Valley of Chicago. With one of the largest candidate class sizes in recent history, the Valley worked hard to put its best foot forward and welcome the new members in style. The theme of the Reunion was “Are you a traveling man?” created by Ruben Owens and Guide Sobecki. The theme focused on Ancient Craft Degrees and their significance to the Fraternity. Saturday’s degrees toured candidates through the various countries and sagas of our heritage and included short presentations on the diversity and complexity of Masonic practices. It revealed how our Brothers around the nation and around the world carry out our universal obligations within their local cultures and values and addressed the importance of Masonic travel and the amazing unity across mankind that our fraternity has given the world. Each degree was well performed and gave the candidates another #1 Top-line Sponsor important lesson in their Scottish Rite journey. The Valley was pleased to welcome over 100 new candidates. Walter J. Andersen Many of these started their initiation back in June 2018 at the Grand Master’s Festival and finished with the Oriental Consistory’s 32nd Degree, directed by Marc Brofka. Commander-in-Chief, Lance Welter, took time to knight each candidate and Class Marshall, Ken Ludwig, spent the day giving them orientation and education. The largest applause of the day went to Class Honoree Marvin Selock for his lifetime of contributions to Freemasonry, Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago, and Illinois Council of Deliberation. A special thank you goes out to all the members and volunteers who made this experience unique for our candidates. Please take time to introduce yourself to the new members and make them feel welcome in their new home.

The VOC is committed to supporting Blue Lodges across the North East Area through events, and the drive for new members. These Lodges form the foundation of Freemasonry and are the bedrock in which our Scottish Rite is built. Without Blue Lodges, there is no Scottish Rite. The VOC will be extending a hand in any way possible so that all branches of Freemasonry can flourish together for many years to come. To that end, the theme of the 2019 Spring Reunion will draw upon one of the most memorable and important lines of ritual in our Blue Lodge Catechism, “In whom do you put your trust?” The entire event will revolve around the important principles taught in the first three degrees. The Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago hosted its second annual Fall Fest on September 29, 2018. The event was moved from late October to September in an effort to achieve better weather and mother nature did not disappoint. A perfect day helped bring out over 800 members, guests and their families. Children and their parents had a host of activities to enjoy including a petting zoo, carnival rides, a pumpkin patch, a haunted house, and lots of candy. Members Scott “Bubba” Neville & Bob “NoHair” Kogut treated kids with delicious caramel apples. “We’re happy to see the kids come out with their families. This is what it’s all about, seeing members and their families together having fun,” stated Scott Neville.

The day was full of delicious food as over 1100 hot dogs were served along with chips, soda, water, and warm apple cider. Lance Welter the Commander in Chief of Oriental Consistory was in charge of logistics and preparation stated; “Our team spent many weeks planning the anticipation of a large crowd. We wanted to make sure each family had a special experience at the event and I think we were able to deliver.” With the leadership of Deputy Representative and Event Chairman Mike Ehle, Fall Fest included a new feature this year called “Trunk or Treat.” Many of the NE Area lodges participated in hosting one of the trunks where kids could stop by and receive candy similar to traditional trick or treating done house to house. Each trunk was decorated with an individual theme. Kids and families kept the parking lot buzzing well after dark. Thank you to all the volunteers and supporters, look for Fall Fest to return next year as this event continues to grow in popularity.

New Acquisition: 1750 Masonic Ritual “Exposure”

By Jeffrey Croteau, Director of Library & Archives, Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Lexington, MA

Through a recent gift, the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library acquired the very rare book pictured here, Samuel Prichard’s Masonry Dissected. It is one of only three copies of the 1750 edition of a famous Masonic ritual exposure that are known to exist. Generously donated by Carolyn Keith Silvia, the granddaughter of Roger Keith (1888-1968), Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts from 1948-1950, this 32-page pamphlet is a 1750 reprint of a Masonic ritual exposure originally printed in London in 1730. London publishers reprinted the book several times between 1730 and 1750, but this is the first American edition of the IMAGE CREDITS: book. The book, collected by Past Grand Master Keith many Samuel Prichard, Masonry Dissected, 1749 [i.e. 1750], years ago, is an exciting addition to the Library & Archives possibly Newport, Rhode Island, possibly printed by Ann collection. The Order of the Poor Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, or what they are commonly known, as The Knights Templars were originally started with eight knights and a French Nobleman by the name of Hughes de Payen. The Knights Templars were a group of elite fighting men whose mission was one of support to those on the front line. I would like to sincerely thank you for choosing me as a recipient of this scholarship; I am honored that you consider me worthy of such a sum. I spend a lot of my time and energy trying to be the most kind, proper, and successful person I can be.

I am currently double majoring in Biochemistry and German, and I am part of the Honors College and other organizations. With my future degrees, I plan on becoming a reserach scientist in one of many biochemical fields, and a degree in German helps me collaborate with or work for corporations from one of the world’s capitals in scientific research. Some areas I am particularly looking into are food service, where I can help produce food that is healthier, more eco-friendly, and can feed more people, and medicinal research, where I can look at diseases and drugs to find ways to help end things like Alzheimers or help treat cancer.I I truly appreciate your investment into my education and your awarding of my character and determination. I hope this investment leads to the positive change I want to accomplish in this world. Zachary L. Dundek
