    Journal of Ukrainian Studies 35–36 (2010–2011) Reconstructive Forgery: The Hadiach Agreement (1658) in the History of the Rus' Serhii Plokhy Few events in Ukrainian and Polish history have provoked as many what-ifs as the agreement concluded between the Cossack hetman Ivan Vyhovsky and representa- tives of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth near the city of Hadiach in the autumn of 1658. Long before the rise of virtual and counterfactual history, historians in Poland and Ukraine defied the maxim of positivist historiography—that history has no subjunctive mood—and plunged into speculation on how differently the history of both countries would have turned out if, instead of fighting prolonged and exhausting wars, Poland-Lithuania and the Hetmanate had reunited in a new and reformed Com- monwealth. Would this have stopped the decline of Poland, the ruin of Ukraine, Ottoman interventions, and the rise of Muscovy as the dominant force in the region? The Union of Hadiach, as the agreement became known in historiography, had the potential to influence all these processes. It envisioned the creation of a tripartite Commonwealth—the Kingdom of Poland, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and a Principality of Rus', with the Cossack hetman as its official head. The union was the culmination of the activities of moderate forces among the Polish and Ukrainian elites and the embodiment of the hopes and dreams of the Ruthenian (Ukrainian and Bela- rusian) nobility of the first half of the seventeenth century. Nevertheless, the com- promise that the union embodied was rejected by mainstream forces on both sides. The Commonwealth Diet ratified the text of the treaty with a number of important omis- sions, but even in that form it was viewed with suspicion and rejected by the Polish nobiliary elites, which could not reconcile themselves to the prospect of Orthodox Cossacks enjoying equal rights with Catholic nobles.

Another volume of Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s magisterial History of Ukraine-Rus’ has become available in English translation, thanks to the efforts of the Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Re- search at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies. It will take its place alongside earlier English-language translations of the History. Currently, volume one is in print, while volumes 2–5 are projected; this sequence, volumes 1–5, covers the time period through the fif- teenth century. The translation of volume ten represents something a bit different—the completion of a four-volume subseries (#7–10) within the History; these volumes deal with the early modern history of Ukrainian Cossacks from the fifteenth century through to 1659 and the ratification of the Treaty of Hadiach. Mykhailo Hrushevsky was at work on this, the tenth volume of his history of Ukraine-Rus,’ when he died in 1934. When he died, only the first part of a longer intended volume was substantially complete.

    1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Ukraine's long and turbulent history has been marked by devas• tation, suppression and discontinuity, the absence of any lasting independent statehood, and the division of ethnically Ukrainian lands among foreign conquerors and more powerful neighbours. Located at the former crossroads between Europe and Asia, where the Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim worlds confronted one another, this rich and fertile land was for centuries a magnet for invaders and colonizers, including Tatars, Poles, Turks, Russians and Germans. Over the ages Ukraine's history was rewritten by its foreign rulers in accordance with their own political and imperial interests, thus obscuring the story and aspirations of one of Europe's largest nations. Indeed, having remained a submerged nation for so long, Ukraine's resurgence during the final years of the USSR's existence was to take many by surprise and not only to alter the political geography of Europe but also to challenge the traditional ways of looking at Russia and Eastern Europe. Early history The Ukrainians, like the Russians and Belarusians, belong to the eastern branch of the Slavs. All three trace their historical ancestry to the state of Kyivan (Kievan) Rus, which arose in the ninth century and developed into a vast and powerful realm. The centre of this conglomerate of diverse territories and principalities was Kyiv and the area around it, that is, the heartland of present-day Ukraine. Kyivan Rus adopted Christianity from Byzantium in 988, along with Old Church Slavonic, with its Cyrillic script, which became the liturgical and literary language.     Hans-Joachim Torke The Unloved Alliance: Political Relations between Muscovy and Ukraine in the Seventeenth Century The manifold relations between Russia and Ukraine in the seventeenth cen¬ tury were played out on at least three levels: official relations on the political, diplomatic and military level; semi-official relations in the ecclesiastical- pedagogical and commercial sectors; and unofficial relations concerned with spiritual and cultural influences. Both the latter complexes are related to the first and cannot be disregarded here, although this article focuses on political events and on the way in which they were understood by decision-makers. My purpose here is not to employ well-known and frequently consulted sources in order to elicit yet another interpretation of the Pereiaslav Agreement of 1654 or the character of relations between Muscovy and the Hetmanate in the ensuing period. Concerning Pereiaslav, there exist at least seven different interpretations (temporary alliance, personal union, real union, vassalage, protectorate, autonomy and incorporation), and in regard to the second topic, there is also a range of interpretations from full independence to complete in¬ corporation of the Cossack state. No Western scholar has yet written an account that goes beyond O’Brien’s monograph to take in the whole century.1 The question remains whether the period from the first contacts of the Dnieper Cossacks with Muscovy in the sixteenth century to the end of the Great Northern War in 1721, examined as a whole, yields a perspective on Muscovite policy that can be reconciled with the formula “Russian Imperialism from Ivan the Great to the Revolution.”2 It may be recalled that the historical roots of Russian imperialism were discussed in the American Slavic and East European Review in the early 1950s.

    Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Muscovy waged a costly struggle against the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for control of the fertile steppe above the Black Sea. This was a region of great strategic and economic importance – arguably the pivot of Eurasia at the time. Yet, this crucial period in Russia’s history has, up until now, been neglected by historians. Brian L. Davies’s study provides an essential insight into the emergence of Russia as a great power. The long campaign took a great toll upon Russia’s population, economy, and institutions, and repeatedly frustrated or redefi ned Russian military and diplo- matic projects in the West. The struggle was every bit as important as Russia’s wars in northern and central Europe for driving the Russian state-building process, forcing military reform and shaping Russia’s visions of Empire. Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 examines the course of this struggle and explains how Russia’s ultimate prevalence resulted from new strategies of military colonization in addition to improvements in army command-and-control, logistics, and tactics.
