Malaysian Journal of International Relations, Volume 6, 2018, 35-46 ISSN 2289-5043 (Print); ISSN 2600-8181 (Online) AHMADIYYA: GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF A PERSECUTED COMMUNITY Abdul Rashid Moten ABSTRACT Ahmadiyya, a group, founded in 19th century India, has suffered fierce persecution in various parts of the Muslim world where governments have declared them to be non-Muslims. Despite opposition from mainstream Muslims, the movement continued its proselytising efforts and currently boasts millions of followers worldwide. Based on the documentary sources and other scholarly writings, this paper judges the claims made by the movement's founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, analyses the consequences of the claims, and examines their proselytizing strategies. This paper found that the claims made by Mirza were not in accordance with the belief of mainstream Muslims, which led to their persecution. The reasons for their success in recruiting millions of members worldwide is to be found in their philanthropic activities, avoidance of violence and pursuit of peace inherent in their doctrine of jihad, exerting in the way of God, not by the sword but by the pen. Keywords: Ahmadiyya, jihad, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, Pakistan, philanthropy INTRODUCTION The Qur’an categorically mentions that Muhammad is the last in the line of the Prophets and that no prophet will follow him. Yet, there arose several individuals who claimed prophethood in Islam. Among the first to claim Prophecy was Musailama al-Kazzab, followed by many others including Mirza Hussein Ali Nuri who took the name Bahaullah (glory of God) and formed a new religion, the Bahai faith. Many false prophets continued to raise their heads occasionally but failed to make much impact until the ascendance of the non-Muslim intellectual, economic and political forces particularly in the 19th century A.D.

MUFTI MUHAMMAD SADIQ AND THE MOSLEM SUNRISE 1 The relationship between Islam and America is an important political and social issue. The rise of Islamophobia is an alarming feature of a society in which misunderstanding and misinformation can sometimes dominate good sense. The conflicting opinions of Barack Obama—who recognised America’s long association with Islam—and Donald Trump—who called for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States—capture the extremity of viewpoints that have recently manifested in America (Obama; Trump). In the history of American Islam, the turn of the twentieth century saw a significant number of Muslims arrive in the United States. Census data is unreliable to provide an exact figure, but an estimate of around sixty thousand does appear in the literature (GhaneaBassiri 136). We do know, though, that peoples from Albania, Bosnia, Syria, Turkey, and India—each with significant Muslim populations—all chose to settle in America (137).

Terrorism and Islamic Radicalization in Central Asia A Compendium of Recent Jamestown Analysis February 2013 The Jamestown Foundation 1111 Sixteenth Street, N.W. Suite 320 Washington, DC 20036 1 EURASIA DAILY MONITOR Militants Threaten to Return to Central Asia after NATO’s Withdrawal from Afghanistan Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor Volume: 10 Issue: 6 January 14, 2013 By: Jacob Zenn http://www.jamestown.org/single/?no_cache=1&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=40302 On December 4, 2012, the deputy chairman of Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee, Kabdulkarim Abdikazymov, said to the press that Jund al-Khilafa was a “real threat” to Kazakhstan’s national security (Tengrinews, December 4, 2012). Similarly, on November 26, 2012, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security of Kyrgyzstan, Tokon Mamytov, warned that “there might be danger of an incursion from Afghanistan into Kyrgyzstan in 2013 or 2014” (Kyrtag.kg, November 26, 2012). Abdikazymov and Mamytov’s statements reflect concerns in Central Asia about “foreign fighters” currently in Afghanistan returning to their home countries after the planned US and NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2013. The last time a world power withdrew from Afghanistan—the Soviet Union in 1988—many foreign fighters from Southeast Asia returned to their home countries and used the financial and logistical networks and skills acquired in the war-torn country to form terrorist groups, such as Kumpulan Mujahidin in Malaysia, Jemaah Islamiyah in Indonesia and Abu Sayyaf in the Philippines. The question now is whether the several thousand Central Asians in Afghanistan present a “real threat” to their home countries, as Abdikazymov suggests, or whether the threat is only perceived.
