Despite opposition from mainstream Muslims, the movement continued its proselytising efforts and currently boasts millions of followers worldwide. Based on the documentary sources and other scholarly writings, this paper judges the claims made by the movement's founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, analyses the consequences of the claims, and examines their proselytizing strategies. This paper found that the claims made by Mirza were not in accordance with the belief of mainstream Muslims, which led to their persecution. The reasons for their success in recruiting millions of members worldwide is to be found in their philanthropic activities, avoidance of violence and pursuit of peace inherent in their doctrine of jihad, exerting in the way of God, not by the sword but by the pen. Keywords: Ahmadiyya, jihad, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, Pakistan, philanthropy INTRODUCTION The Qur’an categorically mentions that Muhammad is the last in the line of the Prophets and that no prophet will follow him. Yet, there arose several individuals who claimed prophethood in Islam. Among the first to claim Prophecy was Musailama al-Kazzab, followed by many others including Mirza Hussein Ali Nuri who took the name Bahaullah (glory of God) and formed a new religion, the Bahai faith. Many false prophets continued to raise their heads occasionally but failed to make much impact until the ascendance of the non-Muslim intellectual, economic and political forces particularly in the 19th century A.D.

  • Flashpoint: Pakistan in Crisis
To approach Rabwah, home to Pakistan’s minority Ahmadi sect, it is necessary to pass through Chiniot, an ancient town said to have been first populated by Alexander the Great of Macedonia, in 326 BC . Today, Chiniot, which stands amidst the lush green countryside of the Punjab province, is known chiefly for its skilled furniture craftsmen. The town is a bustling, but run-down urban centre – the cascading monsoon rain failing to wash away the grime and squalor that hangs all around. It is on the peeling, yellow-plastered walls of Chiniot that the first signs of the hatred directed against the Ahmadi community appear. The movement – named for its founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian (located in the Indian Punjab) – Karachi broke away from mainstream Islam in 1889. The slogans, etched out in the flowing Urdu script, call on Muslims to ‘Kill Ahmadi non-believers’. apparent every official building is heavily fortified – Rabwah, a town of some 50,000 people, houses even the holy places and the parks – testifying to the the largest concentration of Ahmadis in Pakistan. fact that Rabwah remains a town under siege. Flashpoint Overall, there are an estimated 1.5 million Ahmadis While the 1974 decision against Ahmadis was met in the country amongst a population of 55 million by anger within the community, worse was to come. The Martyrdom of Sahibzada Abdul Latif Shaheed by Professor Khalil-ur-Rahman Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha'at Islam Lahore Inc., U.S.A. www.alahmadiyya.org THE MARTYRDOM OF SAHIBZADA ABDUL LATIF SHAHEED by Professor Khalil-or-Rahman, M.Sc. Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha'at Islam Lahore Inc., U.S.A. 1994 www.alahmadiyya.org In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Preface This booklet briefly narrates the biography of the martyr Sahibzada Hazrat Abdul Latif, the most eminent of the Ulamaof Afghanistan, who was stoned to death in July 1903 by order of the Afghanistan authorities for the "crime" of belonging to the Ahmadiyya Movement. The events related here were compiled by Professor Khalil-ur-Rahman in an Urdu booklet from contem porary documents and narrations by our esteemed brother Sahibzada Haroon Ahmad and other members of the family of Sahibzada Abdul Latif. The status and rank of Hazrat Sahibzada Shaheed (martyr) and the event of his martyrdom, with its painful but faith enhancing example, do not stand in need of any introduction. This great martyrdom is a glowing example of patience and steadfastness in the path of faith and true belief. Perhaps never before has there been a greater need than now to dispel the darkness surrounding us by the light of this example. The founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, has recorded the details of Hazrat Sahibzada's martyrdom and that of his faithful pupil Hazrat Mian Abdur Rahman Shaheed in the exquisite book, Tazkirat-ul Shahadatain (The Story of Two Martyrs). In his book, the Founder has also counselled his followers and drawn their attention towards an important affair of which they must remain mindfulat all times.
