196 THE MICHIGAN BOTANIST Vol. 44 NEW RECORDS FOR RUELLIA HUMILIS NUTTALL (ACANTHACEAE) IN WISCONSIN Thomas L. Eddy 426 Walker Avenue Green Lake, WI 54941 [email protected] The genus Ruellia Linnaeus is represented by four species in northeastern U.S. and adjacent Canada (Gleason and Cronquist 1991). Of these, Ruellia hu- milis Nuttall is reported to occur in 25 states in the U.S. The plant is listed on state threatened (T) and endangered (E) species lists in Maryland (E), Michigan (T), North Carolina (T) and Pennsylvania (E). In Wisconsin R. humilis is endan- gered (WDNR, 2005), known from six counties in the two southernmost-tiers of the state (Crawford, Dane, Grant, Portage, Rock, and Walworth) (Wisflora, 2005). Two recent collections of R. humilis in Outagamie and Winnebago coun- ties have extended the known range distribution to northeastern Wisconsin. Ruellia humilis is a perennial forb that goes by numerous common names: fringe-leaf ruellia, hairy ruellia, hairy wild petunia, and wild petunia. Two vari- eties of R. humilis are recognized: var. calvescens Fern. of the Appalachian re- gion and var. humilis (subject of this report), which is the common and wide- spread variety with densely hairy internodes, calyx lobes, and leaf veins and margins. Ruellia humilis var. humilis inhabits prairies and dry upland woods, ranging from Pennsylvania to northern Indiana, southeastern Minnesota, Nebraska, south to western North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas (Gleason & Cronquist, 1991). In Wisconsin R. humilis is quite rare. It flowers near the end of June to mid- September and fruits from the end of July to September. -

Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. The Herbaceous Vascular Plants of Blackacre Preserve A Preliminary List December 3, 2010 Submitted to: Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission Submitted by: William E. Thomas Herbarium Indiana University Southeast Photo: Spiked Crested Coralroot by Richard Lyons 1 Scope The aim of this survey was to compile a rough list of herbaceous vascular plant species on the below described tract and was conducted from July 11, 2010 through the end of the growing season. In addition any extensive populations of invasive alien species were noted. Locale Description The Blackacre Preserve website states that the property consists of 170 acres in eastern Jefferson County Kentucky. It is the authors understanding that some additional acreage (size?) was appended to the southern border of the original 170 acre tract. The property is located at 3200 Tucker Station Rd. The tract is bordered on all sides by housing and urban areas; a railroad track runs along the north border. The terrain is of mostly gentle slopes with some wooded areas and open fields formerly used for pasture or crops. There are several ponds on the property; a limestone glade area constitutes the northeast corner of the tract. A small creek flows east to west across the tract north of the center. There are numerous foot trails, some designated and some rogue. An old section of Mann’s Lick road runs northward about midway in the tract. Map #1 from the Blackacre Preserve website provides a general layout of this tract. Map #2 is a topographic map with a NAD83 UTM 16 grid superimposed and the foot trails plotted in various colors. -

After graduation from college, he moved to Eastern Oklahoma State College where he took a position as Instructor in Botany and Agronomy. In the course of conducting botany field trips and working with local residents on their plant problems, the author became increasingly interested in the flora of that area and of the State of Oklahoma. This led to an extensive study of the northern portion of the Oauchita Highlands with collections currently numbering approximately 4,200. The specimens have been processed according to standard herbarium procedures. The first set has been placed in the Herbarium of Oklahoma State University with the second set going to Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilburton. Editor’s note: The original species list included habitat characteristics and collection notes. INTRODUCTION The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of Natural Heritage (DCR-DNH) was established to protect Virginia's Natural Heritage Resources. These Resources are defined in the Virginia Natural Area Preserves Act of 1989 (Section 10.1-209 through 217, Code of Virginia), as the habitat of rare, threatened, and endangered plant and animal species; exemplary natural communities, habitats, and ecosystems; and other natural features of the Commonwealth. DCR-DNH is the state's only comprehensive program for conservation of our natural heritage and includes an intensive statewide biological inventory, field surveys, electronic and manual database management, environmental review capabilities, and natural area protection and stewardship. Through such a comprehensive operation, the Division identifies Natural Heritage Resources which are in need of conservation attention while creating an efficient means of evaluating the impacts of economic growth. To achieve this protection, DCR-DNH maintains lists of the most significant elements of our natural diversity. -

Rogers2 Key words Abstract Cystoliths are large outgrowths of cell wall material and calcium carbonate with a silicon-containing stalk found in the leaves, stems and roots of only a handful of plant families. Each cystolith is contained within a cell Acanthaceae called a lithocyst. In leaves, lithocysts may be found in the mesophyll or the epidermis. A study by Koch et al. (2009) calcium carbonate reported unique, indented features on the surface of superamphiphilic Ruellia devosiana (Acanthaceae) leaves cystolith which the authors named ‘channel cells’. We report herein that such ‘channel cells’ in the Acanthaceae are actu- leaf epidermal impression ally lithocysts containing fully formed cystoliths in which only a portion of the lithocyst is exposed at the epidermis, lithocyst forming a leaf epidermal impression. Intact leaves and isolated cystoliths from 28 Acanthaceae species (five in the non-cystolith clade and 23 in the cystolith clade) were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. All 23 members of the cystolith clade examined contained cystoliths within lithocysts, but not all showed leaf epidermal impressions. In four species, the lithocysts were in the leaf mesophyll, did not contact the leaf surface, and did not participate in leaf epidermal impression formation. The remaining 19 species had lithocysts in the epidermis and possessed leaf epidermal impressions of differing sizes, depths and morphologies. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Paititi Natural Reserve is located in the southeastern part of the Tandilia mountain range (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). With the aim of recording the floristic richness of Sierra Chica, an untouched area of the reserve, all vas- cular plants were inventoried and categorized by family, status, and life form. Altogether, 364 taxa from 72 families were found, with the most predominant families being Poaceae (20.7%), Asteraceae (20.1%), and Fabaceae (5.8%). We found 95 adventive species, 4 cosmopolitan, and 265 native. The most abundant life forms were hemicryptophytes (33.1%), therophytes (30.6%), and criptophytes (22.6%); the therophytes were mostly represented by adventive spe- cies. We also found species that were known from Buenos Aires province but not from mountainous areas. Despite being a small area within Argentina, Sierra Chica constitutes a valuable refuge for native flora of the Tandilia mountain range system, which is in danger of being affected by exotic plants.
