An open discussion will follow. A summary ofeach garden situation is given below. Garden ofGail Barton and Richard Lowery Our garden is located in Meridian, Mississippi which is in East Central Mississippi (Zone 7b) near the Alabama state line. We live in the city limits in a residential neighborhood. The house on a 90'xI50' lot was purchased in 1984. At that time, the predominant plant materials were S1. Augustine grass, existing pine and hardwood trees and a few exotic shrubs and ground covers (nandina, evergreen barberry, Indica azalea, cast iron plant, English ivy and liriope). The site was mostly wooded prior to Hurricane Katrina Currently the back garden is sheltered by large (100'+) white oaks and other hardwoods including mockernut hickory, water oak, Southern red oak and flowering dogwood. The terrain is basically a graded hilltop with disturbed urban fill dirt in some areas and native clay loam in others. The indigenous plants that appeared in the garden and began to thrive after a few years of gentler management include beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), devil's walking stick (Aralia spinosa), partridge berry (Mitchella repens), hairy sunflower (Helianthus tomentosus), Joe Pye weed (Eupatorium purpureum), mistflower (Eupatorium colestinum), hydrangea vine (Decumaria barbara), wood oats (Chasmanthium sesiliflorum), elephant's foot (Elephantopus tomentosus), wild petunia (Ruellia caroliniana), and turk's cap mallow (Malvaviscus arboreus). Other natives from the adjacent 6 acres were incorporated into the landscape including: American beech (Fagus grandiflora), sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana), Indian pink: (Spigelia marilandica), Piedmont azalea (Rhododendron canescens), arrow-wood viburnum (Viburnum dentatum) and ironwood (Carpinus caroliana). The main advantage ofthe site has been the existing trees especially the large oaks. Since the site is more or less upland, drainage is decent in spite ofthe heavy clay. Even though the land is located in the city ofMeridian, six adjoining acres have been purchased a little at a time. This allows a view ofthe woods including a large stand ofpiedmont azaleas and a view of a soggy bottom where cypress, sweet bay magnolias, native iris and other wetland species thrive. The garden benefits greatly from the borrowed scenery which serves as a soothing backdrop. The site has been challenging because house is located about 50 feet from a busy street. Quick screening was desperately needed. Since the garden is in town and has been described by many as "growed up", there have been various unpleasant interactions with the city zoning department and with neighbors who were fearful ofsnakes that might be hiding in the plantings. The original owner bequeathed English ivy which has been a terrible and ongoing maintenance problem. Our last land purchase included an acre ofmostly Chinese privet and a halfacre of Chinese wisteria The most recent dilemma was putting the place back together after Hurricane Katrina came to town. Most ofthe large pines in the front yard had to be removed and so the garden is in transition from a gently shaded spot to one that bakes in sun. Some plants have made the transition and others have not. The following understory trees have been incorporated into the garden - ironwood (Carpinus caroUniana), red buckeye (Aesculus pavia), bigleafmagnolia (Magnolia macrophylla), American beech (Fagus grandiflora) and flowering dogwood (Cornusflorida). Screening needs are being fulfilled by evergreen starbush (RUcium jloridanum), Florida leucothoe (Agarista populifoUa), southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora), spruce pine (Pinus glabra) and titi (Cyrilla racemiflora). Native shrubs include native azaleas, Virgiania sweetspire (Itea virginica), silverbell (Halesia spp.), witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), wahoo (Euonymus americanus), Alabama croton (Croton alabamensis), possumhaw holly (Rex decidua) and palmetto (Sabal minor). Favorite herbaceous groundcovers include woodland pWox (Phlox divaricata), southern shield fern (Thelypteris kunthii), atamasco lily (Zephryanthes atamasco), black eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), beard tongue (Penstemon digitalis), green and gold (Chrysogonum virginianum). The front yard is now totally screened from the street by a planting ofstarbush, small anise tree, and southern magnolia. Indigenous groupings ofsweetbay magnolia and wild honeysuckle azalea on the perimeter ofthe site impart enticing floral scents. A tiny garden pond with spitting frogs provides soothing water sounds and a realistic habitat for a specimen titi. Small pieces ofnative rock are used to border beds and larger pieces serve as sPeCimen rocks. Yard art including gazing balls and Marc Pastorek's ceramic faces grace the garden. The house is intimately integrated with the garden. Three sliding glass doors open onto an elevated deck that overlooks the back garden. A broken concrete path defines the backyard trails. A series ofarbors mark the transition between different parts ofthe garden. The garden is all about transitions from one season to another and from one garden room to another. Garden ofBill and Lydia Fontenot Lafayette Parish, South-Central Louisiana We are located just north ofLafayette, in south-central Louisiana. We're in the western edge ofthe Atchafalaya Swamp (ca. 14' above mean sea level) about a half-mile east ofBayou Vermilion, a lazy north-south stream which empties into the GulfofMexico a little over an hour due south ofus. We live at the dead-end ofa gravel road. We moved there in the spring of 1982, and began gardening in earnest by the following year. Our plant hardiness zone is 8b. The place was a cow pasture when we first moved in. The gravel road was a cow path. There were no power poles present either. We waited several months for phone and electricity. Over the years we've had the privilege ofwatching the cow pasture succeed into a bottomland hardwood forest, dominated by sweetgum, American elm, hackberry, water oak, and green ash, with lesser amounts ofcoast live oak, sweet pecan, and swamp red maple. We tested how the degree of urbanization impacts a tri-trophic interaction among the Florida scrub endemic plant Palafoxia feayi, a gallmaking midge, and the associated parasitoid wasps. A combination of field surveys and laboratory rearings were used to determine whether habitat disturbance associated with housing development (e.g., land clearing, fire suppression) was correlated with changes in plant architecture, gallmaker abundance, or parasitoid diversity. We found significant differences in the number of side branches of plants at urban sites, and that the number of galls per plant increased with both the number of side branches and plant height. More parasitoids were found in galls collected from urban sites, but parasitoid diversity was unchanged by urbanization. We conclude that although urbanization influenced plant architecture, there was only a minor impact on gallmaker abundance and parasitoid diversity. NELSON SOUTH CAROLINA WILDLIFE & MARINE RESOURCES DEPARTMENT FEBRUARY 1986 INTRODUCTION The maintenance of an accurate inventory of a region's natural resources must involve a system for classifying its natural communities. These communities themselves represent identifiable units which, like individual plant and animal species of concern, contribute to the overall natural diversity characterizing a given region. This classification has developed from a need to define more accurately the range of natural habitats within South Carolina. From the standpoint of the South Carolina Nongame and Heritage Trust Program, the conceptual range of natural diversity in the state does indeed depend on knowledge of individual community types. Additionally, it is recognized that the various plant and animal species of concern (which make up a significant remainder of our state's natural diversity) are often restricted to single natural communities or to a number of separate, related ones. In some cases, the occurrence of a given natural community allows us to predict, with some confidence, the presence of specialized or endemic resident species. It follows that a reasonable and convenient method of handling the diversity of species within South Carolina is through the concept of these species as residents of a range of natural communities. Ideally, a nationwide classification system could be developed and then used by all the states. Since adjacent states usually share a number of community types, and yet may each harbor some that are unique, any classification scheme on a national scale would be forced to recognize the variation in a given community from state to state (or region to region) and at the same time to maintain unique communities as distinctive.

CATHY , DALE PROCHASKA , 2 4 5 HAYDEN HAUCKE , GLENN C. KROH , AND WALTER C. HOLMES ABSTRACT - Field studies in the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area, which consists of approximately 4465.5 ha (11,034.1 acres) of the Post Oak Savannah of Anderson County, have resulted in an annotated checklist of the vascular flora corroborating its remarkable species richness. A total of 930 taxa (excluding family names), belonging to 485 genera and 145 families are re- corded. Asteraceae (124 species), Poaceae (114 species), Fabaceae (67 species), and Cyperaceae (61 species) represented the largest families. Six Texas endemic taxa occur on the site: Brazoria truncata var. pulcherrima (B. pulcherrima), Hymenopappus carrizoanus, Palafoxia reverchonii, Rhododon ciliatus, Trades- cantia humilis, and T. subacaulis. Within Texas, Zigadenus densus is known only from the study area. The area also has a large number of species that are endemic to the West Gulf Coastal Plain and Carrizo Sands phytogeographic distribution patterns. Eleven vegetation alliances occur on the property, with the most notable being sand post oak-bluejack oak, white oak-southern red oak-post oak, and beakrush-pitcher plant alliances. INTRODUCTION The Post Oak Savannah (Gould 1962) comprises about 4,000,000 ha of gently rolling to hilly lands that lie immediately west of the Pineywoods (Timber belt). Some (Allred and Mitchell 1955, Dyksterhuis 1948) consider the vegetation of the area as part of the deciduous forest; i.e., burned out forest that is presently regenerating.

Eddy 426 Walker Avenue Green Lake, WI 54941 [email protected] The genus Ruellia Linnaeus is represented by four species in northeastern U.S. and adjacent Canada (Gleason and Cronquist 1991). Of these, Ruellia hu- milis Nuttall is reported to occur in 25 states in the U.S. The plant is listed on state threatened (T) and endangered (E) species lists in Maryland (E), Michigan (T), North Carolina (T) and Pennsylvania (E). In Wisconsin R. humilis is endan- gered (WDNR, 2005), known from six counties in the two southernmost-tiers of the state (Crawford, Dane, Grant, Portage, Rock, and Walworth) (Wisflora, 2005). Two recent collections of R. humilis in Outagamie and Winnebago coun- ties have extended the known range distribution to northeastern Wisconsin. Ruellia humilis is a perennial forb that goes by numerous common names: fringe-leaf ruellia, hairy ruellia, hairy wild petunia, and wild petunia. Two vari- eties of R. humilis are recognized: var. calvescens Fern. of the Appalachian re- gion and var. humilis (subject of this report), which is the common and wide- spread variety with densely hairy internodes, calyx lobes, and leaf veins and margins. Ruellia humilis var. humilis inhabits prairies and dry upland woods, ranging from Pennsylvania to northern Indiana, southeastern Minnesota, Nebraska, south to western North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas (Gleason & Cronquist, 1991). In Wisconsin R. humilis is quite rare. It flowers near the end of June to mid- September and fruits from the end of July to September.

It is now known there from two collections, apparently at the northwestern edge of the distribution of the species. KEY WORDS: Euphorbiaceae , Chamaesyce, Atoka County, Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, USA. Chamaesyce [Euphorbia ] cordifolia (Elliott) Small (Euphorbiaceae; heartleaf sandmat) is a prostrate annual with stems to 65 cm long, entire leaves, and styles that are bifid to the base (Diggs et al 1999) (Figs. 1, 2]. The species occurs in loose sandy soils in the southeastern coastal plain from North Carolina south to Florida and west to Arkansas and Texas. It was not included in the flora of Oklahoma by Waterfall (1966) or Taylor and Taylor (1994), and it is not cited as part of the Oklahoma flora in USDA, NRCS (2012) or the Oklahoma Vascular Plants Database (2012).
