AGERER1 SUMMARY Afrothismia foertheriana, a new species of Burmanniaceae (tribe: Thismieae) from the peripheral zone of the Onge Forest Reserve in Cameroon’s Southwest Province is described and illustrated. The papillose, multicellular floral trichomes, the tepal’s erose margins, the small, zygomorphic perianth mouth and the dull purplish brown coloration give A. foertheriana a distinctive appearance within the genus. The species is here assessed as being critically endangered. Key words: Burmanniaceae, Thismieae, Afrothismia foertheriana, Cameroon, conservation, tax- onomy. INTRODUCTION All species of the small genus Afrothismia (Burmanniaceae; tribe: Thismieae) are achlorophyllous myco-heterotrophic herbs, receiving all essential nutrients from root colonizing fungi (Leake, 1994; Cheek & Williams, 1999; Imhof, 1999). Due to this adaptation the plants do not perform photosynthesis and the function of their aerial shoots is restricted to sexual reproduction. Since species of Afrothismia generally produce flowers and fruits during the rainy season, the plants spend most of their life cycle subterraneously and are well hidden from the collector’s eye (Cheek & Williams, 1999; Sainge, 2003). Afrothismia winkleri (Engl.) Schltr. and A. pachyantha Schltr., the two first described species of this genus, were discovered almost at the same time in Cameroon’s Southwest Province (Engler, 1905; Schlechter, 1906). Both type localities are situated along the eastern, respectively south-eastern foothills of Mt Cameroon (4095 m), representing one of the country’s most densely populated regions. -

THE NATURAL COMMUNITIES OF SOUTH CAROLINA BY JOHN B. NELSON SOUTH CAROLINA WILDLIFE & MARINE RESOURCES DEPARTMENT FEBRUARY 1986 INTRODUCTION The maintenance of an accurate inventory of a region's natural resources must involve a system for classifying its natural communities. These communities themselves represent identifiable units which, like individual plant and animal species of concern, contribute to the overall natural diversity characterizing a given region. This classification has developed from a need to define more accurately the range of natural habitats within South Carolina. From the standpoint of the South Carolina Nongame and Heritage Trust Program, the conceptual range of natural diversity in the state does indeed depend on knowledge of individual community types. Additionally, it is recognized that the various plant and animal species of concern (which make up a significant remainder of our state's natural diversity) are often restricted to single natural communities or to a number of separate, related ones. In some cases, the occurrence of a given natural community allows us to predict, with some confidence, the presence of specialized or endemic resident species. It follows that a reasonable and convenient method of handling the diversity of species within South Carolina is through the concept of these species as residents of a range of natural communities. Ideally, a nationwide classification system could be developed and then used by all the states. Since adjacent states usually share a number of community types, and yet may each harbor some that are unique, any classification scheme on a national scale would be forced to recognize the variation in a given community from state to state (or region to region) and at the same time to maintain unique communities as distinctive. -

Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. WHC Nomination Documentation File Name: 893.pdf UNESCO Region: LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEANS __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Atlantic Forest Southeast Reserves DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 4th December 1999 STATE PARTY: BRAZIL CRITERIA: N(ii)(iii)(iv) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 23rd Session of the World Heritage Committee IUCN informed the Committee that the evaluation of this property has been undertaken based on the revised nomination submitted by the State Party in April 1999. The Atlantic Forest Southeast Reserves contain the best and largest remaining examples of Atlantic forest in the Southeast region of Brazil. The 25 protected areas that make up the site display the biological richness and evolutionary history of the few remaining areas of Atlantic forest of Southeast Brazil. The area is also exceptionally diverse with high numbers of rare and endemic species. With its "mountains to the sea" attitudinal gradient, its estuary, wild rivers, karst and numerous waterfalls, the site also has exceptional scenic values. The Committee decided to inscribe the site under natural criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv). It also recommended that the State Party should be encouraged to restore natural conditions in the Serra do Mar State Park, which potentially could be incorporated in the site. The Delegate of Morocco noted the values of the site but highlighted the challenges of the management of serial sites. The Delegate of Australia noted that management in serial sites is complex but can be done with careful strategic planning and an appropriate legal framework. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS The Atlantic Forest Southeast Reserves in the states of Parana and Sao Paolo, contain some of the best and largest examples of Atlantic forest in Brazil. -

The conservation and management strategies described can be generalized and will enable management authorities in neighboring countries to build their reflections and strategies on a solid foundation. Wolfe Copyright by Craig Francis Barrett 2010 ABSTRACT Corallorhiza is a genus of obligately mycoheterotrophic (fungus-eating) orchids that presents a unique opportunity to study phylogeography, taxonomy, fungal host specificity, and photosynthesis gene evolution. The photosysnthesis gene rbcL was sequenced for nearly all members of the genus Corallorhiza; evidence for pseudogene formation was found in both the C. striata and C. maculata complexes, suggesting multiple independent transitions to complete heterotrophy. Corallorhiza may serve as an exemplary system in which to study the plastid genomic consequences of full mycoheterotrophy due to relaxed selection on photosynthetic apparatus. Corallorhiza striata is a highly variable species complex distributed from Mexico to Canada. In an investigation of molecular and morphological variation, four plastid DNA clades were identified, displaying statistically significant differences in floral morphology. The biogeography of C. striata is more complex than previously hypothesized, with two main plastid lineages present in both Mexico and northern North America. These findings add to a growing body of phylogeographic data on organisms sharing this common distribution. To investigate fungal host specificity in the C. striata complex, I sequenced plastid DNA for orchids and nuclear DNA for fungi (n=107 individuals), and found that ii the four plastid clades associate with divergent sets of ectomycorrhizal fungi; all within a single, variable species, Tomentella fuscocinerea. -

Abstract: Plants of Dictyostega orobanchoides arise from about 1 mm thick rhizomes, which are densely cove- red by sessile, imbricate, peltate scale leaves. The resulting interfoliar spaces are inhabited by fungal hyphae up to 6 µm thick, often developing vesicle-like bladders. The fungus also colonizes the tissue of the scale leaves, inter- as well as intracellularly, forming vesicles but no arbuscules, and it even penetrates the vascular bundles of the leaves. The rhizome itself does not become infected. The 200 µm thick roots emerge from the rhizome and have a 2-layered cortex and voluminous rhizodermis, which both are delicate and often disrupted or mis- sing. In contrast, the strongly reinforced, tertiary endodermis and the central cylinder are durable and have a con- siderable tensile strength. Although the roots grow through the hyphal masses in the interfoliar spaces when emerging from the rhizome, they only become infected from the rhizosphere. A collar of rhizomogenous tissue hinders the interfoliar hyphae from direct contact to the roots. Only within the rhizodermis, the mycorrhizal fun- gus builds coils of heteromorphic hyphae, arbuscule-like structures, and vesicles. Hence, the mycorrhiza in D.
