Ryszard Zajączkowski the Experience of Polish Exile Ryszard Zajączkowski The Experience of Polish Exile in the Times of the Second World War: the Case of Joseph Wittlin Polish literature is, to a large extent, the work of emigrants. An example of an exile author is Józef Wittlin (died in 1976), who left Poland in 1939 and spent 35 years in the United States. He is known as the author of the novel Salt of the Earth and the collection of essays Orpheus in the Hell of the 20th Century, among others. He also left his memoirs which he was writing throughout his whole life. Wittlin’s output presents an image of a divided America. In his essays he praises freedom and democracy in Washington’s country. However, his private notes reveal a different America, where interpersonal relations are calculated, life is materialistic and religiousness superficial. Wittlin belongs to a wide circle of Polish exile writers in America who described their adoptive country. He stands out in this group because he presents an image of a less well- known America and at the same time he speaks as a moralist. Key words: Joseph Wittlin, exile, the USA, the Second World War, religion The Experience of Polish Exile in the Times of the Second World War: the Case of Joseph Wittlin The Polish people are a nation that, to a large extent, lives in a diaspora; and Polish literature is, to a considerable degree, the work of emigrants. Since the fall of the First Republic of Poland in 1795, until as late as 1918, Poland did not exist on the map of Europe. A short period of independence was interrupted by the Second World War, which began with the invasion of Poland in 1939. On the conclusion of the war, the Polish State fell under the control of the Soviet Union. A difficult process of re-establishing independence began again in 1989. After the Second World War “about 6.000.000 Polish people refused to return to Poland, which was occupied by the Soviets, constituting a political emigration. This refusal was intended as a protest against the Yalta treaties which were in violation of international law and they also expressed the decision to fight for the restoration of Poland’s independent existence, with all available means” (Pragier 1975:222). This group is sometimes described as the “Second Emigration,” as distinctly different from the first “Great Emigration” group that began after the November Uprising in Poland, in 1831. Every time captivity occurred, a group of writers emigrated to preserve creative freedom and avoid persecution. Throughout the period of captivity, emigration was unquestionably a symbol of independence and an active expression of protest against the political diktat, and the literature created in exile became one of the three greatest emigration literatures in history, one of the most important aspects of Polish literature and, simultaneously, the core of Polish spiritual culture abroad. Those who during the Second World War had to leave Poland traveled in different directions. Some found shelter in England, others went overseas and settled in South American countries, and also in Canada or the United States. The case of Joseph Wittlin is very characteristic of the experience of Polish exiles during the war, the outbreak of which significantly changed the writer’s life. However, nothing suggested that he might find himself across the ocean. Wittlin was born on August 17, 1896, in Dmytrów, “in northeast Galicia, on the border with Russia, in the part of Poland that then belonged to Austria” (Wittlin 1991:354). He was a Polonized Jew. In 1908 he began his education at a classical gymnasium in Lvov. Later, he gained his high-school leaving certificate in Vienna, where from 1914 to 1916 he also attended university. He participated in World War I, subsequently returning to Lvov. Upon the outbreak of war, he joined the Eastern Legion, and after its disbandment, when Lvov was captured by the Russians, he fled as a political refugee to Vienna, where he passed his final secondary school exams and, in 1914-1916, studied at the University of Vienna. In 1919-1921 he once again resided in Lvov, where he studied Romance languages and philosophy as well as art history and Polish philology. He also taught at a Jewish humanities gymnasium and later worked for 2 years at a theater in Lodz. He also collaborated with Tydzień Literacki, a supplement to Kurier Lwowski. In 1922 he moved to Lodz and for one season was appointed literary director at the City Theater, also lecturing at the theater’s Drama School. In 1925 and 1926 he traveled to Italy and Yugoslavia for the first time; in 1928 he also went to France. He visited the country on the Seine two more times before the war. In 1936 he published his famous novel Sól ziemi [Salt of the Earth], which was translated into 16 languages, and in 1939 he even came close to winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. He lived in Warsaw (where he lived on and off from 1927) up until June 1939. His stay, as a scholarship winner, at a Royaumont Cistercian Abbey in the vicinity of Paris, a well-known place where writers met and worked, became for Wittlin the beginning of his life-long estrangement from his native land.i Several months after the outbreak of war, he joined his wife and eight- year-old daughter in France. Having failed to leave for England, the Wittlins traveled through the south of France (Lourdes, Nice) and through Spain to Portugal; from there, in 1941, they went to New York, on Herman Kesten’s invitation. The writer spent the rest of his life in this metropolis, specifically at Riverdale, a quiet port in the Bronx, on the Hudson River. In America, Wittlin further pursued his literary activity. From 1941-1942 he was editor of Tygodniowy Przegląd Literacki Koła Pisarzy z Polski, and from 1943 to 1947 – of Tygodnik Polski in New York. In 1943 he gained prestigious awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters in New York for the English edition of Sól ziemi, published in 1941. He also frequented the international community, as in the American metropolis “during the war there were […] numerous German-language writers and artists from Austria, Hungary and Germany. It was a rather curious society, almost a continuation of the Habsburg Monarchy and Weimar Germany, including such personalities as Herman Broch, the author of The Death of Virgil, and Bela Bartok” (Miłosz 2001). It is therefore not surprising that Wittlin was a co-founder of the Writers in Exile PEN-Club.ii It is also not unimportant that on May 23rd, 1953, he was baptized into the Catholic Church, which crowned his religious quest initiated back in the 1920s, and particularly intense since his arrival in America. He died in the early morning of 29 February 1976, in New York.iii His departure for the United States of America became the beginning of the writer’s lifelong stay in exile. He then undertook the third translation of The Odyssey, which appeared in London in 1957iv, continued to write essays, as well as creating and translating poems. In 1963, the Paris journal Kultura published a collection of his essays under the collective title Orfeusz w piekle XX wieku [Orpheus in the Twentieth- Century Hell]. In addition, Wittlin had been cooperating with Radio Free Europe since 1952. It should also be remembered that the texts the writer left in manuscript form constitute a large percentage of his works; from the 1920s to the 1970s he kept notebooks, and after the war he also wrote memoirs.v His stay in the USA inspired Wittlin to devote ten essays to American issues; the reprints were collected in the volumes Orfeusz w piekle XX wiekuvi and Eseje rozproszone [Scattered Essays].vii Radio Free Europe also broadcast ten talks by him concerning American literature,viii four poetry programs presenting verses by American poets,ix and the already mentioned reviews of Broadway theater plays.x The writer’s numerous comments on America are also included in his hitherto unknown notebooks. There is an affinity between Wittlin and another exile, Tymon Terlecki, who wrote: “It is not true that Europe is an illusion. It is true that it takes the form of a difficult fidelity, a bitter, but unique, meaning of our life.” In this context, he made a significant appeal: “The heroism of Polish emigration after 1945 is simple: to persevere in European culture, in defiance of itself” (Terlecki 1999:172). Wittlin incessantly longed for Europe. On January 16, 1952, he wrote to Aleksander Janta: “[…] I was up to my ears in despondency and dejection, the mental states to which I am trying not to treat you […]. I am already fed up with those 11 years of not moving from New York and a journey to Europe would come in handy – which I cannot even dream of.”xi At the beginning of the 1960s, however, the writer was given an opportunity to go to Europe for the summer holidays. In the 1960s and 1970s he traveled to Western Europe eight times – mainly to Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland and England – to rest and to meet his family and friends. The trips to Europe became opportunities for the writer to escape from the stifling American atmosphere and to return to a high culture and warm human relationships. The Lot of an Exile and Literature In the article Mój pierwszy krok w Ameryce [My First Step in America], published shortly after his arrival on the American continent, Wittlin greeted his new homeland with gratitude and enthusiasm.

Poland’s contribution to world cinema has been immense. This class offers an examination of the chief currents of modern Polish film, including, but not limited to, the cinema of “the Polish School” of the 1950s and 60s, the works of experimental and avant- garde auteurs, satires and parodies of the late-socialist period, historical “great canvas” films, as well as more recent work that addresses the dramas, desires, and discontents of political transition and the realities of post-communist society. We will discuss the ways Polish filmmakers have represented Polish history, and how they have “read” history through their work. We will consider Polish cinema within the context of both Western European film and film production in the Soviet Bloc. A main focus will be on the oeuvre of Poland’s most recognized and prodigious filmmakers, including Wajda, Kieslowski, Ford, Polanski, Holland, Zanussi, and Hoffman, as well as on the work of “Wajda’s children” – the newest generation of filmmakers.     Health as an investment in Poland in the context of the Roadmap to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Health 2020 Katarzyna Dubas-Jakóbczyk, Ewa Kocot, Aleksandra Czerw, Grzegorz Juszczyk, Paulina Karwowska, Bettina Menne Abstract The aim of this report is to assess the policy options for investments in health in Poland in the context of the Roadmap to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, building on Health 2020, the European Policy for Health and Well-being. As background, national strategic documents incorporating the concept of health and well-being for all were reviewed and methodological aspects of the health-as-investment approach presented. Methods included a literature review and desk analysis of key national regulations as well as quantitative analysis of indicators used to monitor the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Health 2020 policy implementation. The results indicate that the policy options for investment in health in Poland can be divided into two categories: general guidelines on building and promoting the investment approach and more specific examples of actions on health investments supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Health 2020 strategies. '1t's a well-known fact that those who accuse Poles of anti-Semitism are enemies of Poland." Everyone who has spent any time talking to Poles and Jews about the relations between them has heard some version of the sentiments paraphrased in these two comments. Even though Jews and Poles no longer live together in Poland, the simple phrase "Poles and Jews" evokes powerful emotions. Jews have bitter memories of friction and conflict, of being despised and threatened by Poles. Distrust of and dislike of Poles is handed down within the culture; most Jews today have had no personal experience of living among Poles. In contrast, when challenged to think about Polish-Jewish relations, Poles are quite likely to recall the good old days before the Nazis came when Poles and Jews got along very well with each other. But this sentimental memory is often linked with a sense of betrayal; since Jewish-Polish relations are remembered as good, Jewish accusations of Polish anti-Semitism are perceived as base ingratitude, if not treachery. In the ethnic cauldron that is Eastern Europe, there is nothing unusual about the historic frictions between Poles and Jews, for there can be little doubt that intense ethnic animosity is one of the principal features of the region. To be sure, Eastern Europe is not unique in this regard Ethnic conflict is a universal phenomenon, emerging from a tangled web of linguistic, religious, economic, and (broadly defined) cultural differences.

The joy, even euphoria, that followed the recovery of independence in 1918 was faithfully noted by literature. Around 1930, the tone changed. The economic crisis, the violation of the constitution by the military junta, the emergence of fascist groupings on the Right, propagating antisemitism and announcing ‘a night of long knives’ for ‘Jews and intellectuals,’ converged with Hitler’s grab for power in neighbouring Germany. Marxist publications began to attract writers, although few felt able to place their trust in Stalin. The Communist Party of Poland, considered a foreign agent and, thus, illegal, was given a low rating in Moscow because of its efforts to adapt itself to specific local conditions; its leaders were called to Moscow in 1938 and executed by order of Stalin, while the party itself was disbanded under the pretext that it was infested with traitors. In intellectual circles a feeling of impotence and presentiments of an imminent European catastrophe prevailed. It is no wonder, then, that the literature of the thirties was marked by apocalyptic or humorously macabre visions. 2. Conditions for cultural life now very different. 3. Skamander - 2 - The dominant literary clique in Poland in the optimistic years of the 1920s, as distinct from the 1930s when the mood in the country became much gloomier and more apocalyptic was known as the the Skamander group. As the first generation of writers to come to maturity in an independent Poland, they were eager to throw off the heavy burden of commitment to the Polish cause which had weighed down literature in the nineteenth century.

I have a lot of difficult answering this question- I’m fluent in both English and Polish, and speak both without an accent. I spent my childhood in Poland and continue to visit my extended family there annually, and speak Polish with my parents at home. At the same time, I learned English quite early in my life and use it in my day to day interactions living in the United States. Nothing distinguishes me from a typical speaker of either language. Perhaps a better question for surveys and questionnaires to ask is the language I’m a native reader of. To this I have a definitive answer: Polish. I learned to read and discovered the magic of reading in Polish, and Polish books of all shapes, sizes, lengths and genres have fascinated me since.

    A JOURNEY THROUGH POLISH LITERATURE European Literature 09 OCTOBRE 2013 GORA BERNADETTE Henryk Sienkiewicz (1905), Władysław Reymont (1924), Czesław Miłosz (1980), Wisława Szymborska (1996). How many of you know these four authors and know what they have in common, besides their nationalities? The four of them were awarded a Nobel Prize but nevertheless remain little known outside of Poland. How many of you can give the name of, at least, one polish contemporary author? These examples, among many others, prove that Polish literature remains unknown despite it being a big part of European literature. To start my presentation, I’d like you to have a look on this quotation by Czesław Miłosz who wrote, among other, a book about the History of Polish Literature (The History of Polish Literature, Berckeley,1969). In his work, he wrote “Polish literature focused more on drama and the poetic expression of the self than on fiction (which dominated the English-speaking world). The reasons find their roots on the historical circumstances of the nation.” Over a first phase, it thus seems important to start out with a broad overview of the general history of Polish literature throughout the ages before we can understand what happened during the 20th century, and fully understand the main references to the previous time periods which we can find today. In Polish literature, historical problems have always been an essential characteristic. One can notice that Polish literature has always been torn between its social duties and literary obligations. With this in mind, it is possible for me to offer you the promised journey through my national literature.

    MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR This year has been an extremely active one for the Slavic and East European Section (SEES) of the Association of College and Research TABLE OF CONTENTS Libraries (ACRL), which is one of several divisions of the American Li- brary Association (ALA). Major activities include: 1) the upcoming SEES program at the 2010 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.; 2) the implementation of the 2009–2010 SEES Action Plan, which involved, most significantly, a joint SEES/AAASS sponsored roundtable at the 2009 AAASS National Convention in Boston; 3) new digital projects of the Message from the Chair. ................................................................... 2 Access and Preservation (A&P) Committee; 4) the work of a special joint SEES/WEES ad-hoc committee to explore a potential merger of the two Message from the Editor. .................................................................. 6 sections; 5) updates to the Slavic cataloging manual by members of the Automated Bibliographic Control (ABC) Committee; and 6) personnel . I. CONFERENCES and format changes to the SEES newsletter. In 2009 SEES membership continued its gradual decline at the same rate (6 percent) as ACRL as a whole.
