Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu Kwinto, Siara i Yanek Drzazga – o antroponimach w wybranych filmach Juliusza Machulskiego Juliusz Machulski jest jednym z najpopularniejszych reżyserów polskiego kina – jego utwory rozpoznawane są przez kolejne pokolenia widzów1, a fil- mowe cytaty nie tylko krążą w rozmowach wiernych fanów Seksmisji, ale stanowią już nawet pewnego rodzaju „dobro narodowe”2. Kultowość dzieł Machulskiego to wszakże rezultat połączenia kilku czynników: świetnej, w niektórych wypadkach niemal legendarnej gry aktorów, umiejętności natury warsztatowej autora, a także jego szczególnego podejścia do językowego kształtu dialogów. Okazuje się bowiem, że wspomniany reżyser (i zazwyczaj także scenarzysta swoich filmów) może pochwalić się niebywałym słuchem, co pozwala mu na wprawne komponowanie wypowiedzi bohaterów i uzyska- nie – by posłużyć się sformułowaniem Marka Hendrykowskiego – wysokiego wskaźnika „cytowalności”3. Jako bystry obserwator (i „podsłuchiwacz”) rze- czywistości Machulski podchodzi do potocznej polszczyzny bez dystansu badacza, ale za to z ciepłem i humorem, których przecież w codziennym poro- zumiewaniu się nie brakuje. Nazwisko Machulskiego najczęściej bywa łączone z komedią, a więc spe- cjalnością reżysera (elementy tego gatunku przenikają nawet ukradkiem do innych jego filmów, z założenia niekoniecznie komediowych). Polish Feature Film after 1989 By Tadeusz Miczka Spring 2008 Issue of KINEMA CINEMA IN THE LABYRINTH OF FREEDOM: POLISH FEATURE FILM AFTER 1989 “Freedom does not exist. We should aim towards it but the hope that we will be free is ridiculous.” Krzysztof Kieślowski1 This essay is the continuation of my previous deliberations on the evolution of the Polish feature film during socialist realism, which summarized its output and pondered its future after the victory of the Solidarity movement. In the paper “Cinema Under Political Pressure…” (1993), I wrote inter alia: “Those serving the Tenth Muse did not notice that martial law was over; they failed to record on film the takeover of the government by the political opposition in Poland. […] In the new political situation, the society has been trying to create a true democratic order; most of the filmmakers’ strategies appeared to be useless. Incipit vita nova! Will the filmmakers know how to use the freedom of speech now? It is still too early toanswer this question clearly, but undoubtedly there are several dangers which they face.”2 Since then, a dozen years have passed and over four hundred new feature films have appeared on Polish cinema screens, it isnow possible to write a sequel to these reflections. First of all it should be noted that a main feature of Polish cinema has always been its reluctance towards genre purity and display of the filmmaker’s individuality. That is what I addressed in my earlier article by pointing out the “authorial strategies.” It is still possible to do it right now – by treating the authorial strategy as a research construct to be understood quite widely: both as the “sphere of the director” or the subjective choice of “authorial role,”3 a kind of social strategy or social contract.4 Closest to my approach is Tadeusz Lubelski who claims: “[…] The practical application of authorial strategies must be related to the range of social roles functioning in the culture of a given country and time. -

Health as an investment in Poland in the context of the Roadmap to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Health 2020 Katarzyna Dubas-Jakóbczyk, Ewa Kocot, Aleksandra Czerw, Grzegorz Juszczyk, Paulina Karwowska, Bettina Menne Abstract The aim of this report is to assess the policy options for investments in health in Poland in the context of the Roadmap to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, building on Health 2020, the European Policy for Health and Well-being. As background, national strategic documents incorporating the concept of health and well-being for all were reviewed and methodological aspects of the health-as-investment approach presented. Methods included a literature review and desk analysis of key national regulations as well as quantitative analysis of indicators used to monitor the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Health 2020 policy implementation. The results indicate that the policy options for investment in health in Poland can be divided into two categories: general guidelines on building and promoting the investment approach and more specific examples of actions on health investments supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Health 2020 strategies. WRESTLING WITH GHOSTS: POLES AND JEWS TODAY Madeline G. Levine "Everyone knows that Poles imbibe anti~Semitism with their mothers' milk." '1t's a well-known fact that those who accuse Poles of anti-Semitism are enemies of Poland." Everyone who has spent any time talking to Poles and Jews about the relations between them has heard some version of the sentiments paraphrased in these two comments. Even though Jews and Poles no longer live together in Poland, the simple phrase "Poles and Jews" evokes powerful emotions. Jews have bitter memories of friction and conflict, of being despised and threatened by Poles. Distrust of and dislike of Poles is handed down within the culture; most Jews today have had no personal experience of living among Poles. In contrast, when challenged to think about Polish-Jewish relations, Poles are quite likely to recall the good old days before the Nazis came when Poles and Jews got along very well with each other. But this sentimental memory is often linked with a sense of betrayal; since Jewish-Polish relations are remembered as good, Jewish accusations of Polish anti-Semitism are perceived as base ingratitude, if not treachery. In the ethnic cauldron that is Eastern Europe, there is nothing unusual about the historic frictions between Poles and Jews, for there can be little doubt that intense ethnic animosity is one of the principal features of the region. To be sure, Eastern Europe is not unique in this regard Ethnic conflict is a universal phenomenon, emerging from a tangled web of linguistic, religious, economic, and (broadly defined) cultural differences. -

The joy, even euphoria, that followed the recovery of independence in 1918 was faithfully noted by literature. Around 1930, the tone changed. The economic crisis, the violation of the constitution by the military junta, the emergence of fascist groupings on the Right, propagating antisemitism and announcing ‘a night of long knives’ for ‘Jews and intellectuals,’ converged with Hitler’s grab for power in neighbouring Germany. Marxist publications began to attract writers, although few felt able to place their trust in Stalin. The Communist Party of Poland, considered a foreign agent and, thus, illegal, was given a low rating in Moscow because of its efforts to adapt itself to specific local conditions; its leaders were called to Moscow in 1938 and executed by order of Stalin, while the party itself was disbanded under the pretext that it was infested with traitors. In intellectual circles a feeling of impotence and presentiments of an imminent European catastrophe prevailed. It is no wonder, then, that the literature of the thirties was marked by apocalyptic or humorously macabre visions. 2. Conditions for cultural life now very different. 3. Skamander - 2 - The dominant literary clique in Poland in the optimistic years of the 1920s, as distinct from the 1930s when the mood in the country became much gloomier and more apocalyptic was known as the the Skamander group. As the first generation of writers to come to maturity in an independent Poland, they were eager to throw off the heavy burden of commitment to the Polish cause which had weighed down literature in the nineteenth century. -

Elucidating the blurred lines of the national historical imagination. The narrative allure of Sienkiewicz’s With Fire and Sword in 1933–1934 Poland Estelle BUNOUT Postdoctoral researcher Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), Université du Luxembourg (LU) [email protected] Abstract The novel With Fire and Sword by Henry Sienkiewicz (1846–1916) is an example of the interweaving of fiction, historiography and national collective imagination. It was written at the end of the period of Polish partition (1882–1888) and deals with events that marked the history and the collective imaginations of Poles, Ukrainians and Jews: the history of the Khmel’nyts’kyy Uprising (1648–1657). The epic nature of these historical events already carried the seeds of a powerful and emotional narrative that lends itself to mythicization. However, the reading of this book in a later situation, the Second Polish Republic (1921–1939), led the Polish Sanacja government to withdraw it from the compulsory reading in Polish schools in 1932. This aspect of the Jędrzejewicz school reform sparked a lively debate in the Polish press, whereby historians, literature scholars and journalists discussed the function that this book should have in the patriotic education of young Polish citizens, against the backdrop of tensions between the state and the political opposition on the issue of minorities, namely the Ukrainian minority. This discussion discloses the central place that Sienkiewicz has been given in Polish culture. At the same time, it examines the position that Polish intellectuals attribute to the Ukrainian minority in the Polish state and culture. Kopernik była kobietą!” – sposoby budowania komizmu językowego w wybranych filmach Juliusza Machulskiego Obszerne zagadnienie kreatywności językowej – pojęcia prze- wodniego konferencji – zachęca do tego, by przyjrzeć się różnym użyciom polszczyzny, zwłaszcza tym artystycznym, a więc niety- powym i niecodziennym. Ten ostatni przymiotnik to swoiste sło- wo klucz; w niniejszym artykule wielokrotnie pojawią się odwo- łania do kategorii potoczności, bezpośrednio przecież związanej z codziennym doświadczaniem świata [Lebda 2003]. Okazuje się bowiem, że trzeba nie lada słuchu i umiejętności, by stylizowany na potoczny dialog filmowy został odebrany przez widownię jako naturalny i swojski, a nie jako nieporadny czy sztuczny [Hendry- kowski 2013]. Za jednego z wirtuozów słowa wśród rodzimych filmowców z pewnością należy uznać Juliusza Machulskiego, autora dzieł – wypada chyba w tym miejscu posłużyć się modnym neosemanty- zmem – kultowych, takich jak Vabank, Seksmisja czy Kiler. Utwory Machulskiego stanowią fenomen społeczno-kulturowy: są uwiel- biane przez pokolenia, nawet mimo zmiany realiów, do których na- wiązywały w czasie premiery [Zarębski 2010]. Swoją żywotność zawdzięczają nie tylko sprawności warsztatowej twórcy (w więk- szości przypadków reżysera i scenarzysty zarazem) czy niezapo- mnianym kreacjom aktorskim, ale i charakterystycznej konstrukcji filmowej polszczyzny, zwracającej uwagę na samą siebie, a zatem – ukształtowanej pod dyktatem funkcji poetyckiej w rozumieniu 338 Małgorzata Miławska Romana Jakobsona [1960]. O unikatowym talencie autora Kingsajzu do swobodnego operowania mową potoczną świadczy fakt, że cytaty z jego scenariuszy funkcjonują w powszechnym obiegu, zasilając tym samym zasób skrzydlatych słów [Lubelski 2009b; Szczygieł, Zalewski 2003]. Juliusza Machulskiego włącza się do grona autorów w polskiej kinematografii1, choć on sam nie przyzwala sobie nawet na miano artysty i traktuje swoją rolę dość „usługowo” [Lubelski 2009a]. -

O.2019 In 2001, dr. A. Mandzy, working with scholars in both Poland and Ukraine, initiated the Cossack Battlefield Commission to explore and study Cossack battlefields. The battlef ield near Zboriv 1649 was chosen as the object of survey. Much like previous excavations at the Berestechko Battlefield, the Zboriv project made heavy use of historical records, cartographic evidence and archaeological fields testing methods. Beginning in 2002, the group of researches, working under promotion dr. Mandzy in conjunction with the I. Kryp’iakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies and Department of Architecture and Conservation of Lviv Polytechnic University, the regional power of preservation of historical and cultural monuments for the Ternopil Oblast, began a joint survey, the purpose of which was identifying any possible remaining cultural resources associated with the military events of 1649. Material of this survey was the basis for hypothetical planning reconstruction of 1649 field fortifications lines. The Battle of Zboriv is one of the major events in Ukrainian and Polish history. Following two days of bitter fighting, the battle came to an end with the signing of the Treaty of Zboriv. This Treaty recognized the de facto autonomy of three Ukrainian provinces and established an independent Ukrainian Cossack principality.
