In the light of the author’s research, the nationalist heritage of border disputes from the first half of the 20th century influenced relations between the two countries also in later years, although the minority problem in their mutual relations was marginal and officially did not exist for both sides. Introduction There is no doubt that national minorities, and especially the issue of Cieszyn (Te- schen, Těšín) Silesia, have always been an important albeit complicated issue in the history of the Polish-Czechoslovak relations. Apart from the rivalry between War- saw and Prague over leadership in Central European politics, the Polish authorities and most Poles had an emotional attitude to the defeat in the border dispute with Prague in 1918–1920. Most Poles believed that the decision made on 28 VII 1920 by the Council of Ambassadors about the division of Cieszyn Silesia did not solve NATIONAL MINORITIES IN POLISH-CZECHOSLOVAK RELATIONS 19 the fate of 100,000 of their compatriots in Czechoslovakia, mostly natives, living in the western part of the region referred to Poland as Zaolzie (the land beyond the river Olza1) while their return to homeland was only a matter of time.

    2019, Vol. 20, No. 4 (79) ISSN 2451-1617 The Weekly Polska Walcząca (1939–1949): A Review Ewelina Godlewska Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Warsaw [email protected] ORCID: 0000-0002-9157-6018 ABSTRACT The paper concerns the history of the sociopolitical weekly Polska Walcząca (Eng. Fighting Poland), the fi rst Polish Armed Forces newspaper in the West during World War II. Scientifi c objective: To present the contributors and circumstances of the establishment of the newspaper, and its functions, including the discussion on journalism genres. Research methods: The method of analyzing the content of the 1939-1949 press was used, i.e. the entire period of publishing the newspaper. Results and conclusions: The weekly fulfi lled informational and educational tasks fi rst as a military newspaper, and then as a veterans’ weekly, accompanying Polish emigration in Great Britain. Cognitive value: The paper complements the literature on Polska Walcząca because it contains a possibly full overview of the aspects of functioning of this newspaper. References were also made to the forms of expression used in the weekly, using the content analysis method. The weekly refl ected the attitude of the Polish emigration from 1939 to 1949, and the collective fate and ethos of military emigration.

    100 fall 2020 no. 22 The Works of Józef Wittlin: The Perspective of Genetic Criticism Maciej Wcisło ORCID: 0000-0002-9202-0353 In the present article, I discuss the benefits of employing genetic criticism in the study of Józef Wittlin’s works. Such a critical approach has not been discussed in critical works de- voted to Wittlin. The benefits of such a critical approach have been briefly outlined in the present article, as will be discussed in more detail herein.1 In the present article, I discuss the relationship between genetic criticism and poetics. It should be emphasized that I will focus on poetics in motion, the evolving poetics of the author.     Ryszard Zajączkowski The Experience of Polish Exile in the Times of the Second World War: the Case of Joseph Wittlin Polish literature is, to a large extent, the work of emigrants. An example of an exile author is Józef Wittlin (died in 1976), who left Poland in 1939 and spent 35 years in the United States. He is known as the author of the novel Salt of the Earth and the collection of essays Orpheus in the Hell of the 20th Century, among others. He also left his memoirs which he was writing throughout his whole life. Wittlin’s output presents an image of a divided America. In his essays he praises freedom and democracy in Washington’s country. However, his private notes reveal a different America, where interpersonal relations are calculated, life is materialistic and religiousness superficial. Wittlin belongs to a wide circle of Polish exile writers in America who described their adoptive country. He stands out in this group because he presents an image of a less well- known America and at the same time he speaks as a moralist.     Anca Baicoianu Is the ‘colonial’ in ‘postcolonial’ the ‘Soviet’ in ‘post-Soviet’? The boundaries of postcolonial studies The post-1989 transition of East-Central Europe to capitalist democracy has focused much scholarly attention on the political, economic, social, and cultural trajectories of the countries in the former Soviet bloc as well as on the fostering of new identities within a wider, European or global, context. Yet transitologists’ attempts to establish transregional comparisons that would tackle the similarities and differences between postcommunist territories and former colonies were met with deflection and silence among the proponents of postcolonial studies. With very few exceptions (e.g. McClintock 1992, Said 1993), Western scholars were rather reluctant to count the USSR among other, mostly European, ‘modern empires’. Still, the postcolonial sensibility of people in the Soviet sphere—as documented by oral history, sociological investigation, and cultural analyses—is hard to ignore. In the last few years, the postcolonial- postcommunist connection gained momentum in East-Central European studies, as part of the reflective attempts to translate a specific historical and cultural experience into one of the most widespread theoretical idioms in current academia. In doing so, East-Central European scholars interrogate the limits of an increasingly canonical discipline and join in its critical revaluations by measuring colonialism against other systems of domination. Therefore, rather than investigating the possibilities for interdisciplinary dialogue opened up by the recurrence of the prefix ‘post’, the aim of paper is to go back to the roots and, by means of documentary sources, explore the fractures and continuities between the Western imperialist project (which served as a model for the pre-1917 Russian expansion) and the Soviet domination, with a special focus on the status of the former satellites (Romania, in particular).

    42 Štúdie a analýzy GrzeGorz Gąsior Cieślarova platforma – národnostná otázka v Tešínsku v období stalinizmu In the Communist era, the so-called Cieślar Platform was the only program addressing nationality issues in the Czech part of the Teschen Silesia inhabited by the Polish minority. Its author was Paweł Cieślar, member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and Polish autochthon, who prepared sev- eral memorandums containing a plan for the regulation of nationality issues in the territory inhabited by Poles. His assumption was that the whole indigenous population in the region, who used the local dialect, were Polish, regardless of their official nationality. According to Cieślar, the population censuses that prior to the establishment of the Czechoslovak State had reported the prevalence of the Czech popula- tion did not reflect the actual state of affairs and he accounted for the declining number of Poles in the Czechoslovak population census by national oppression. His main ambition was to establish autonomy in the counties of Karviná and Český Těšín. He pro- posed further that all members of the autochthonous population sent their children to schools with Polish as language of instruction. Schools with the Czech language of instruction, where the Polish language would be regarded as an obligatory subject, would be intended only for the incomers. Cieślar regarded his program as one that would redress grievances and as the only fair solution. Cieślar expressed his views only before the regional authorities of CPC in Ostrava in 1950, at their behest, but did not publish them. Due to the resolution of the Central Committee of the CPC, his “plat- form”, represented in a distorted manner, was publicly denounced at a regional conference in Český Těšín in April 1951.
