04 Airport Times “I do!” Airports often see couples passing through their doors to attend weddings but Auckland Airport played a more direct role last month when a New Zealand couple chose to get married in the airport chapel. Bev Brodie and Steven van Son wanted to elope to their chosen destination, Fiji, but found that organising a last-minute wedding in the island paradise too expensive and time consuming. So, instead, they approached Auckland Airport to hold the ceremony in the airport chapel on their way to Fiji. To help the couple tie the knot, Auckland Airport organised Blue Coat Ian Payne, who is a marriage Matariki – airport style celebrant, to offi ciate the ceremony. The evening was attended by airport staff, local Tainui, sponsors and the wider airport community. Marae manager Zella Morrison said it was important that the airport Marae paid tribute to the occasion. “Matariki is something special for all New Zealanders to share. It connects us with our unique Maori heritage, nature, creativity and expression. For many Maori, Matariki signals the beginning of a new cycle of life and a time to refl ect on the previous year,” says Zella. Traditionally Matariki has two meanings, both referring to a tiny constellation of stars; Mata Riki (tiny eyes) and Mata Ariki (eyes of God). Maori legend tells of a time when Ranginui, the father, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother, were forcibly separated by their children. The god of the winds, Tawhirimatea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens, where they have been in existence ever since. Did you know... the Matariki star cluster can be seen all over the planet, making New bride Bev says, “We thought it famous worldwide.
