Your FREE MAGAZINE for Kirkheaton, Upper Heaton, Gawthorpe, Bog Green, Briggate, Houses Hill, Wellhouse ISSUE 27 & Lascelles Hall NEWS AUTUMN 2020 GOOD NEWS EDITION! These past few months have been a difficult and stressful time for almost everyone. So we have decided to devote much of this edition of the magazine to the good things that have been happening in our community during this period. Individuals and groups have all stepped up to support their fellow residents and inside are some of the good news stories which have made a difference to many people’s lives in our area during this pandemic. They include small acts of kindness, mass production of face masks and large scale fund raising as well as organised help delivered to people self isolating. All done by volunteers who have shown by their actions that they care for their fellow residents and the wider community. Benefitting from these acts of kindness have been individuals and organisations such as Kirkwood Hospice, Forget me Not Trust and the Community Centre through Yetton Together. A BIG thank you goes to them all from us all.

...and there’s more inside! FIRST AID, FOOD SAFETY, Kirkheaton comes together HEALTH AND SAFETY COURSES during the pandemic When lockdown was announced in March this year Clare Walters [Parish Councillor] got together with Yetton Together and Joanne Bedingfield, the local  All fully accredited volunteer coordinator working with Kirklees Council,  Meet statutory to deliver aid quickly to vulnerable members of our requirements community.  Suitable for paid staff and volunteers Joanne writes:  Running at local venues Together we set up a Kirkheaton Mutual Support Contact Jill 07808277525 or Group. Working with a number of local residents, we Steve 07740704164 for further rallied round, providing assistance to vulnerable people information in the area. Leaflets were distributed and volunteers started to offer help. We soon had around 20 people delivering food, collecting prescriptions, posting letters, walking dogs and even offering a befriending service to residents who were lonely and isolated. During the peak of the lockdown it was only due to the determination and commitment of these volunteers that we were able to respond to the requests and tackle the challenges the group were presented with. We had to overcome queues at the supermarkets, ensure volunteers were safe whilst delivering and manage payments - when we were advised not to handle cash. The mutual aid group has had the support of our local Councillors and anchor charities who were there to provide guidance on health and safety and answer any questions to ensure we could deliver the right service. Over the last five months, we have responded to hundreds of requests and are still providing that support with some volunteers continuing to do the weekly shopping for the elderly or isolated during the restrictions. Kirkheaton has seen so many neighbours and 2 friends come together, showing how much we care and support each other in our community. The group was personally thanked by the Lord- Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and the Mayor of Kirklees who wrote ‘It is often the case that difficult times bring out the best in people and I have met incredible people doing incredible things’ Each and every one of our Kirkheaton volunteers is incredible and we thank you from the whole community.

We started by creating care packages to be sent out BEAUMONT ARMS to vulnerable people, and Jasmine baked cupcakes

for the NHS teams,” said Steve.

They were then approached by a local man asking for their support with a unique fundraising idea. Steve and Sonia said: “The fundraising for Kirkwood Hospice and Forget Me Not started when Mark Watkinson and his family had the idea to start collecting copper change to help local charities who were going to be impacted during the coronavirus pandemic. Mark came into the shop and asked if Costcutters could be a drop off point for the local village to donate their copper change. Over a few weeks, they hit the £1,000 mark, and then an incredible £2,000!

During the coin collection, a lady popped into Costcutter with a generous gift for Sonia and Steve. Sonia said: “We both then made the decision to start a raffle to raise even more funds for Kirkwood and Forget Me Not to add to the community’s fundraising. So the next day we promoted it on the Kirkheaton Matters group and officially started the raffle.”

From then it snowballed and ended up with over 100 prizes! “We’ve had every you could think of, from chocolate, vouchers and alcohol, to a Ferrari day experience. With all the amazing prizes being donated, we decided to contribute a boys and girls BMX bike too.”

The enormous raffle came to an end on Friday 7th May, and after totting up their final total they had raised an unbelievable £6,000!

Adding this to Mark’s copper change collection, the community has raised £8,000 which will be split between the two causes.

Sonia said: “We were so overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone.” Steve added: “It has created a real good buzz in the community. We are so proud to be supporting Kirkwood; It is so close to us here in Kirkheaton.

A big thank you also goes to Mark and his family for kick starting these events and all their hard work.

Scarecrows support Hospice! Jayne Oldmeadow, Kirkheaton resident and local Podiatrist, was concerned that Kirkwood Hospice was struggling with Covid secure fund raising due to lockdown so she came up with a brilliant idea which just grew and grew – an outdoor Scarecrow Trail around Kirkheaton. So she set to work pitching her idea to the village – and the response was amazing! Thanks to the creativity and hard work of enthusiastic residents over 50 scarecrows went on display around the area on a very wet Saturday in August. The challenging weather didn’t deter the crowds with cars, emptying dustbins, although some did resort to nursing and sewing. Others were their cars to ensure they stayed relaxing toasting marshmallows dry! on a fire, reading, listening to The scarecrows didn’t seem and making music etc. There to mind the wet. There were were glamorous mermaids and sporty scarecrows playing beautiful princesses and even football, cricket, rugby, doing Harry Potter put in an appearance gymnastics and body boarding. in a few locations! There were busy ones tinkering One scarecrow decide to walk the Pennine Way while another sat at the bus stop patiently waiting for the 262 bus instead! Some even took to the sky on a zip wire and a zimmer frame! They were all amazing! Jayne, along with her partner Carl, raised £2211.68 for Kirkwood. An amazing total! Well done to you both and the people who helped and supported you on the day. To see more photos from the day visit yettontogether.org

Hanging up the rubber gloves

After 32 years, in December, Jayne Whitehead, Nurse Practioner, will be hanging up her masks, disposing of her rubber gloves and plastic aprons and retiring. Jayne has been helping maintain the health of the people of Kirkheaton at its surgery and has seen many residents grow from tiny babies to being parents themselves. Alongside her many jobs she has jabbed many of us along the way - but all in the name of keeping us healthy – flu, pneumonia, measles etc etc and we’ve all thanked her for it! Double Anniversary for Yetton Together This September Yetton Together celebrates its 10th year as a group and also its 5th year as a charity. Yetton Together was formed after an open meeting attended by approximately 50 people in July 2010. Its aim was, and still is, to promote a community spirit and to improve all our lives. We started by canvassing the opinions of residents about how they wanted to improve our surroundings. This led to the production of a village plan which became a blueprint for future action. In September 2015 Yetton Together was granted Charity status number 1163247 with eight trustees headed by our Chair Trish Mellor. At the same time we took on our biggest challenge. We signed a lease with Kirkheaton Church to run the old infant school as a community centre. Kirklees had leased the building since 1982 and it housed Kirkheaton playgroup and the library which was due to close.

Only really essential maintenance had taken place during that time so it was in a very dilapidated state - rotting window frames, inadequate toilets and unhygienic kitchen were the immediate problems. With financial support from the council, KBPC and other organisations, we have greatly improved the building while still retaining its Victorian character and the library. It is now a welcoming space suitable for all. Over the five years, we have expanded its use to include a popular cafe and as a venue for a large variety of classes, groups and meetings while managing to retain a library space. Our only problem is that we now don’t have enough space to satisfy our growing users! We have also continued in our efforts to improve our local environment. We finance 20 summer hanging baskets and numerous planters and flower beds which we also plant and maintain. We have helped establish, develop and maintain the Community Orchard and have organised and help fund the restoration of stone walling in the area. 12 Yetton Together has also joined forces with other groups in various ways. It helps organise and participates in the annual Community Gala. It is also part of Dalton Together. But we could not do all this without the support of our marvellous band of volunteers (approximately 60.) Some give up their time very regularly to help bake, run the cafe, fund raise, water the tubs etc. Others help out occasionally by delivering the magazine or helping plant out the bedding plants. Together they contribute an enormous amount of time and effort to the community and we are very grateful for their continuing help. Without them we could not function. We had hoped to mark our double anniversary and their support with a celebratory ‘do’ but that will have to wait for some time in the future.

Changes at the Community Centre Kirkheaton Community Centre has taken its first tentative steps in reopening. We have ensured we are conforming to government Covid related regulations. Social distancing permitting, we have been able to invite many of our users back again. Unfortunately some activities will not be able to start up for the foreseeable future. These include the café, lego club and some music-making and singing. We will keep everything under review. But to make things easier for our users we are pleased to announce that we now have an easy to use online booking system which will allow potential users to see what is available and when. At the time of writing the library is due to reopen but possibly at different times. Kirkheaton is classed as a browsing library which means a limited number of people can enter the library and browse the shelves for their books. Due to the smallness of the room at Kirkheaton one person or family group will be allowed in at any one time. IT will not be available on site for the foreseeable future. Our Covid-compliant hall 13 No excuse for antisocial dog owners Yetton Together volunteers spend a considerable amount of their time in the Community Space just off Heaton Moor Road planting wild flowers, tending the fruit trees and trimming the grass in the top section to enhance the area. Unfortunately some of our volunteers have had dog dirt sprayed all over them when they have

strimmed the grass around the fruit trees. Support for carers and care workers in the Kirkheaton area

Many of us are suffering as a result of Covid 19 in many ways – isolation, fear, trauma, overwhelming grief in particular – and are likely to meet challenges for some time to come..

Absolute Specialists Wellbeing has been given some funding by Kirklees to offer online or telephone emotional support for carers and care workers in our area. They are a group of highly trained emotional health/wellbeing practitioners who are supporting carers and care workers in Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield through the Covid 19 crisis and beyond. They give a supportive, safe, and confidential online space to offload, have a conversation and be offered a mental health toolkit to help manage thoughts, anxiety, stress and relationships. The aim is to reduce the long term impact on people’s mental health, relationships and ability to continue to work.

So don’t suffer alone – there is support out there for you Call/email Clare now: [email protected] OR 07984 115927 For more info about their service go to: https://aswellbeing.co.uk/support-for-carers/
