Welcome to our Autumn & Winter Newsletter. It’s been a while since I have written a piece for this magazine! I want to take this opportunity to update you about our future plans and ask for your help in shaping the future of Kirkwood.

After two years spent developing a brand new service for people living with dementia at the end of life, Kirkwood’s very first Admiral Nurse, Jacqueline Crowther, is passing the baton to her successor, Rachel Guest.

With dementia now accepted as a life limiting illness, Kirkwood’s first Admiral Nurse service was introduced back in 2016. The aim was to improve end of life care and experiences for people living with dementia and their carers in Kirklees. Back in May 2015, Margaret Godsman, of Cleckheaton, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer. When her daughter, Fiona, got engaged to marry Roger Brown, the family were unsure whether Margaret would be able to make the special day. However with the help of Kirkwood Hospice, she did. This is Fiona’s story…

Jude Sellmeyer became a loyal supporter and dedicated ambassador for Kirkwood Hospice following the care her son, Jody, received at the end of his life. Back in June, Jude set off across Europe on a fundraising mission to remember Jody, who sadly died from Motor Neurone Disease last year, aged just 38.
