Supporting Organizations: Topic 1 – Vertical Cities and Urban Habitat Speaker : Mr. John Jacobs (Chief Operating Officer, CTBUH) John Jacobs is the Chief Operating Officer of CTBUH with headquarters based in Chicago. Prior to joining CTBUH, John was SVP of Yankee Group Research in Boston and Executive of TIA.

Topic 2 – Design Challenges Speaker : Mr. Robert Whitlock (Design Principal, KPF) Robert Whitlock has 40 years experience in architecture design, and is a Design Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, whose focus on the design of high- rise towers, mixed-use developments, and large-scale master plans has been as much about enhancing the urban experience as about shaping individual buildings.

Since beginning professional practice, Whitlock has focused on density, public space, programmatic integration, supertall building, and the influences of these elements on the quality and sustainability of the “global city.” Most recently, Whitlock designed the 528-meter tall CITIC Tower (or Zun 中國尊), the tallest building in Beijing. Inspired by the form of a traditional Chinese ritualistic artifact – the “zun” – CITIC Tower is a new icon of the capital city, with transit connections and an observation deck that brings the public into the space. The CITIC Tower will be in full operation this year.

Topic 3 – High Performance Structural Engineering Speaker : Mr. Dennis Poon (Vice Chairman, Thornton Tomasetti) Dennis Poon has more than 40 years of experience in the structural engineering of a wide variety of building types, such as supertall structures, mixed-use buildings, hotels, airports, arenas and residential buildings worldwide. His expertise is in the application of state-of the-art engineering technologies for building analysis, design and construction, including project delivery strategies. Dennis also has extensive experience in seismic design, structural investigations and optimization of structural systems. High on his list of accomplishments is the role he played in leading the structural design teams for China’s tallest buildings : Zhongnan Center (729 m), (632 m), Ping An International finance Center (600 m), (480 m), and (468 m).
