It is my privilege to introduce Ms Nathalie Nicaud, an outstanding soprano with a brilliant voice and international career, who will interpret the "Ode To Joy" of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It is a rare privilege to begin a day's work under such harmonious and melodious conditions. Ladies and gentlemen, President José-Manuel Barroso will open this conference. The past weeks have underlined the importance for the Union of having such a forward-looking, committed and driven leader at the helm of our institution. Mr President, we are all very grateful that you have taken the time out of their busy agenda to be with us today. President Barroso's intervention will be followed by Mrs Doris Pack, the Chair of Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education. As you all know, Mrs Pack is one of the most distinguished Members of the European Parliament, holding many 6 prestigious awards for her parliamentary work in the fields of education, culture and youth. Mrs Pack, this is also an occasion to express my warm gratitude to you and the European Parliament for having allowed us to organise this Global Jean Monnet Conference in your premises. It is another example of the outstanding cooperation between our two institutions. Of course, the European Parliament has always been closely associated with the Jean Monnet Programme and its Conferences. This link is personified by Professor José-Maria Gil-Robles who, as former President of the European Parliament and current President of the Former Members Association, also chairs the European University Council for the Jean Monnet Action. Sir, I thank you very much for your continuing commitment to the Jean Monnet Programme. Ladies and gentlemen, As we can see here today, the Jean Monnet and European Community Studies Association networks are truly word-wide multipliers of excellence in the study and knowledge about the European Union. In this prestigious room of the European Parliament, Ambassadors, diplomats and Jean Monnet Professors from all continents have come together for a real exercise of intercultural dialogue on the European Union's future after the Treaty of Lisbon. The quality of the people gathered here reflects the quality and the pertinence of the Jean Monnet Programme. And this brings us to our next point: the presentation of the Jean Monnet Prize 2010. For this part of our agenda, I am glad to give the floor to Mrs Vassiliou, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. Mrs Vassiliou, let me add how glad we are in the Directorate General for Education and Culture to work under the guidance of such an eminent Commissioner. 7 I.     Tribute to Professor Guido de Marco by Mr. Tom McGrath (Ireland) Administrator, European Commission, External Relations DG, Brussels Mme de Marco, Members of the de Marco family, your Excellencies, dear friends am not speaking on behalf of the European Commission, the I European External Action Service or the European Union, as I know that President Barroso and HRVP Ashton have already addressed their thoughts and condolences to you on the sad occasion of Guido’s passing last year. So, for the next 2 minutes I will be representing myself, as I share some personal reflections and memories with you of a person I hold in the highest regard and affection. I feel immensely privileged: ● to have known Guido, ● to have shared his company here and in his – your – home, ● to have listened and learned from his quiet wisdom, ● to have been embraced by his extraordinary warmth and humanity. Quite simply – he was a monumental man. 31 And thus, his loss is equally monumental – for his family, his country, the Euromed region, his friends worldwide, MEDAC and these very seminars. He was a man of great intellect, dignity and humility. He was a man of extreme warmth who possessed the great gift, when you were in his company, of making you feel that you were the only person in the universe as he listened to you; and that your words sprang from eternal fountains of wisdom. But it was Guido’s words that fill the void left by his passing. He was a wonderful orator who spoke – ● With passion and poetry, ● And at length, without notes, with amazing powers of recall.

    Portuguese history storyboard Cláudia Martins [email protected] Instituto Politécnico de Bragança Escola Superior de Educação Abstract This paper intends to present relevant facts about the Portuguese culture and history, so as to enable a better understanding of who the Portuguese are and provide an overall perspective of the course of history in this westernmost part of Europe. Although the choice of historical facts was subjective by nature, it is believed it achieves the aim of presenting information in a critical but blithesome way, with a view to also deconstructing national stereotypes, such as that Portuguese people are always late or are crazy about football. Finally, it focuses on some information about the Portuguese language mainly to serve as a term of comparison with other European languages.
