SOCIETY

It’s almost the New Year resolution season. Better yet, it should be called making-promises-and-breaking-them season. Only 8 percent of people actually complete their resolutions, according to a study reported by Forbes. Of the 50 percent of Americans that establish resolutions, one in three ditch their vows by the end of January. As college students, how should we deal with our challenges and conquer them in the New Year? Well, ironically, students are more likely to talk about their problems instead of fixing them. But wait. Doesn’t talking about our problems actually help our problems? Does it make them disappear? Poof. They’re gone. No, it doesn’t. Have you ever heard of the saying that words speak louder than actions? You probably haven’t. But why is it so common for people to resort to talking about their issues instead of actually solving them? In 2014, merely 14 percent of people over the age of 50 achieved their resolutions, as reported by Statistic PHOTO COURTESY OF HEALTHTALK.UMN.EDU Brain. Twardy almost immediately responded, expressing her support and willingness to become involved. The two students campaigned to bring the project to Providence, walking around Smith Hill and inviting local business patrons and PC students to become involved. Patrons were most inclined to participate when Bolotin and Twardy approached them with the camera and asked bluntly, “Do you want to be involved?” In total, the two project leaders solicited 49 portraits, split almost evenly: half community members, and half PC students, with maybe one or two more community members. Though darkness once deceived my mind O miracle of miracles! To fetter down my soul To be a slave set free! True Light my bondage did unbind From cursed balls and weighty chains To show Itself in full. I did not know to be!

For how shall darkness combat light? Now to a long and blessed road It cannot hold its own! A calling beckons me, But with wiles for its lack of might, To return to darkness' prison house It would keep the soul alone So all men may be free. Within a cell of dark and shade May truth protect my every word Where lies could whisper 'true' And true love guide my feet! To have a malice ready made That every pris'ner here interred Against the truth it knew. May cry out and be freed!

But Faithful Truth will hear the cries O miracle of miracles! Of every wailing soul To be the slaves set free, And break the stronghold where it lies From cursed balls and weighty chains So it may be made whole. They do not know to be. And thus I wailed, though I was blind In all iniquity Still me my Savior came to find And make me truly free

In piercing sunlight, drab-brown feathers give Off hints of gold, and I am struck by awe To see a sign of wonder’s presence here. The birdling’s wings half-flap, and all undone, You kneel beside me. We are children, blest With gifts of grandeur, gifts of His great grandeur, So struck by being, full of joy to be, That my heart might break for love, for hope Of what a little bird might signify; And still, I look to you, to find in you, The mystery that we call holiness, In saints who see beyond our pale, blank faces. So when you knelt beside me like a boy, I catch a glint of worth past knowing, gleams Of something I cannot tell, but in silence. For here is peace, and only peace, as I Have never seen, nor ever felt before.

In 2012, Bernasconi continued to be a major force for the offense and even stepped up for the Friars in a critical spot late in the season.
