100 Cans by Andy Warhol
Art Masterpiece: 100 Cans by Andy Warhol Oil on canvas 72 x 52 inches (182.9 x 132.1 cm) Collection Albright-Knox Art Gallery Keywords: Pop Art, Repetition, Complimentary Colors Activity: 100 Can Collective Class Mural Grade: 5th – 6th Meet the Artist • Born Andrew Warhol in 1928 near Pittsburgh, Pa. to Slovak immigrants. His father died in a construction accident when Andy was 13 years old. • He is known as an American painter, film-maker, publisher and major figure in the pop art movement. • Warhol was a sickly child, his mom would give him a Hershey bar for every coloring book page he finished. He excelled in art and won a scholarship to college. • After college, he moved to New York City and became a magazine illustrator – became known for his drawings of shoes. His mother lived with him – they had no hot water, the bathtub was in the kitchen and had up to 20 cats living with them. Warhol ate tomato soup every day for lunch. Chandler Unified School District Art Masterpiece • In the 1960’s, he started to make paintings of famous American products such as soup cans, coke bottles, dollar signs & celebrity portraits. He became known as the Prince of Pop – he brought art to the masses by making art out of daily life. • Warhol began to use a photographic silk-screen process to produce paintings and prints. The technique appealed to him because of the potential for repeating clean, hard-edged shapes with bright colors. • Andy wanted to remove the difference between fine art and the commercial arts used for magazine illustrations, comic books, record albums or ad campaigns. -
Gregory Crewdson Press Release
Herbert Tobias (1924-1982) 14 January – 28 March 2009 Galerie Rudolfinum The Photographer Herbert Tobias (1924-1982) At the end of the 1950s, Herbert Tobias was the rebel star of the German photography scene. Today, only a few veterans recall his name. His images, however, are widely known: Andreas Baader naked from the waist up, the young Klaus Kinski, actress Hildegard Knef, Nico, children at play, erotic fashion photography. These images have made a profound impression on visual memory, making Herbert Tobias into a true legend amongst experts and connoisseurs. This Herbert Tobias retrospective with approximately 150 exhibits is the most extensive presentation to date of the diverse photographic oeuvre of this important German photographer who died in 1982, aged only 57. Photographic Work Russia Herbert Tobias started taking pictures as a self-taught photographer. While in the army at the tender age of nineteen he took photographs on the Eastern Front in Russia. These pictures already reveal his unusual view of reality. Their metaphorical depth and symbolism far exceed both standard war photography and snapshots taken as mementos by a young soldier. Paris Herbert Tobias’s professional life as a photographer began in earnest in Paris, where he lived with his partner Dick from 1951 to 1953. Here he took moody photographic tableaux of the city, compelling portraits of existential bohemians and the first fashion photographs for Vogue. Berlin After returning to Germany, it did not take long for Tobias to earn his name as a photographer. The critics were enthralled by his photographs full of “sweetly wicked eroticism”, describing them as “as provocative as vivid reality, bubbling with fiery seduction”. -
Elliott Murphy & Band
Just a story from America’ ten Friday, February 7 , 2003 gehore. The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, The Violent Femmes, The Smithereens, neo-folkie Shawn Colvin. His name is Elliott James Murphy and his is one of the more remarkable stories in modern rock'n roll! Afkomstig uit Long Island - New York, begon Elliott Murphy zijn carrière eind jaren zestig. -

Andy Warhol: When Junkies Ruled the World
Nebula 2.2 , June 2005 Andy Warhol: When Junkies Ruled the World. By Michael Angelo Tata So when the doorbell rang the night before, it was Liza in a hat pulled down so nobody would recognize her, and she said to Halston, “Give me every drug you’ve got.” So he gave her a bottle of coke, a few sticks of marijuana, a Valium, four Quaaludes, and they were all wrapped in a tiny box, and then a little figure in a white hat came up on the stoop and kissed Halston, and it was Marty Scorsese, he’d been hiding around the corner, and then he and Liza went off to have their affair on all the drugs ( Diaries , Tuesday, January 3, 1978). Privileged Intake Of all the creatures who populate and punctuate Warhol’s worlds—drag queens, hustlers, movie stars, First Wives—the drug user and abuser retains a particular access to glamour. Existing along a continuum ranging from the occasional substance dilettante to the hard-core, raging junkie, the consumer of drugs preoccupies Warhol throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their actions and habits fascinate him, his screens become the sacred place where their rituals are projected and packaged. While individual substance abusers fade from the limelight, as in the disappearance of Ondine shortly after the commercial success of The Chelsea Girls , the loss of status suffered by Brigid Polk in the 70s and 80s, or the fatal overdose of exemplary drug fiend Edie Sedgwick, the actual glamour of drugs remains, never giving up its allure. 1 Drugs survive the druggie, who exists merely as a vector for the 1 While Brigid Berlin continues to exert a crucial influence on Warhol’s work in the 70s and 80s—for example, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol , as detailed by Bob Colacello in the chapter “Paris (and Philosophy )”—her street cred. -
