ÖZET TÜRKİYE’DE 1980 SONRASINDA BİR ALTKÜLTÜR GRUBU OLARAK PUNK’IN OLUŞUMU Nazlı Deniz BAYRAKTAROĞLU Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi, Sosyoloji Bölümü, Yüksek Lisans Tezi, 215 sayfa, Haziran 2011 Danışman: Yrd.

  • Precious but Not Precious UP-RE-CYCLING
The sounds of ideas forming , Volume 3 Alan Dunn, 22 July 2020 presents precious but not precious UP-RE-CYCLING This is the recycle tip at Clatterbridge. In February 2020, we’re dropping off some stuff when Brigitte shouts “if you get to the plastic section sharpish, someone’s throwing out a pile of records.” I leg it round and within seconds, eyes and brain honed from years in dank backrooms and charity shops, I smell good stuff. I lean inside, grabbing a pile of vinyl and sticking it up my top. There’s compilations with Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Devo and a couple of odd 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters soundtracks. COVER (VERSIONS) www.alandunn67.co.uk/coverversions.html For those that read the last text, you’ll enjoy the irony in this introduction. This story is about vinyl but not as a precious and passive hands-off medium but about using it to generate and form ideas, abusing it to paginate a digital sketchbook and continuing to be astonished by its magic. We re-enter the story, the story of the sounds of ideas forming, after the COVER (VERSIONS) exhibition in collaboration with Aidan Winterburn that brings together the ideas from July 2018 – December 2019. Staged at Leeds Beckett University, it presents the greatest hits of the first 18 months and some extracts from that first text that Aidan responds to (https://tinyurl.com/y4tza6jq), with me in turn responding back, via some ‘OUR PRICE’ style stickers with quotes/stats. For the exhibition, the mock-up sleeves fabricated by Tom Rodgers look stunning, turning the digital detournements into believable double-sided artefacts.

  • The Potential of Informative Comedy Music As Supplementary Teaching Material
http://dx.doi.org/10.7592/EJHR2018.6.3.mckeague European Journal of Humour Research 6 (3) 30–49 www.europeanjournalofhumour.org Lyrical lessons: The potential of informative comedy music as supplementary teaching material Dr. Matthew McKeague Kutztown University of Pennsylvania [email protected] Abstract The comedic arts have provided opportunities for humourists to spread information to audiences, sometimes intentionally and other times as a side effect while trying to create laughter. Educators have also found success incorporating comedy into the classroom with humorous activities. While research regarding comedy as a tool to spread information or educate audiences has focused primarily on literature, broadcast media, and film, the area of informative comedy implemented through music remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, the researcher defines ‘informative comedy’ and takes a critical literacy approach analysing song samples of comedy musician “Weird Al” Yankovic—one of the notable comedic music artists in the 20th and 21st centuries—and discusses how his music could be used in a classroom setting. While comedy such as Yankovic’s is not designed to be an educational tool, the researcher suggests that his songs could be used as supplementary materials in the classroom to reinforce concepts specifically regarding cultural issues through commentary as well as lessons in science and grammar. A central aspect of this exploratory paper involves Yankovic’s mix of comedy and informative content focused on culture in the United States, using the popular music genre to convey ideas in ways that may be more palatable for wider audiences and that could be used to assist classroom instruction.

  • Velvet Underground
IN MEMORIAM AND A FAREWELL TO LOU REED (1942-2013) The editorial collective of Situations deeply mourns the recent loss of Lou Reed. His heroic struggle with cancer was well known and even though he lost the fi ght earlier than we all wished, his capacity for change provides an inspiration for all of us. The political implications of his artistic production were vintage radical imagination; beyond the open sexuality and sexual politics on many of his songs, he also demonstrated great understanding of the ecological crisis and gun control in lesser known songs such as “The Last Great American Whale.” Reed’s corpus hopefully will be critically engaged by serious research in the generations to come. It is in the spirit of serious research that the Situations collective is privileged to remember Lou Reed in a retroactive fashion by reprinting Ellen Willis’ seminal essay (1978) on the Velvet Underground written in the heat of a struggle against nihilism that is reminiscent of Dionysian and cheerful excess, perhaps the subversive import of ‘the body electric,’ and its resurrection and redemption. Although a period piece, Ellen’s essay may well serve us a very powerful antidote to today’s cyberspace culture. The essay which follows here as a memorial to the spirit and struggle of Lou Reed and what his work meant to the generation of the Sixties and early Seventies will be found again in a forthcoming book, The Essential Ellen Willis, edited by Nona Willis Aronowitz (University of Minnesota Press, Spring 2014). The editorial collective wishes to thank Nona for permission to reprint this essay in this issue, Vol.
