RESUMEN El examen de los criterios seguidos por el régimen nazi en su persecución e intento de aniquilación de los judíos europeos revela graves incoherencias con un modelo de persecución por motivos religiosos o raciales. Se defiende que el único sentido posible de la persecución fue cultural y, específicamente, moral. La reeducación y/o rehabilitación social de los judíos fue considerada imposible desde los inicios del régimen y del sistema de campos de concentración, juzgándose necesario establecer centros de exterminio ad hoc, los cuales, a pesar de su eficacia asesina, fracasaron en el deseo del régimen de proceder con la debida Anständigkeit y fueron por tanto sustituidos por el sistema de Auschwitz. Toda la evolución tecnológica y organizativa de la Solución Final desde los Einsatzgruppen hasta Birkenau presenta una evolución objetiva hacia formas cada vez más impersonales y asépticas de exterminio, evidenciando un componente moral en la toma de decisiones con frecuencia ignorado o ridiculizado. La conclusión define la Solución Final como una guerra moral, es decir, de destrucción de una moral por otra mediante la eliminación de su base biológica. -

Im Rahmen ei- ner internationalen Tagung führte Liliane Weissberg die beiden The- men »Hannah Arendt« und »Frankfurter Schule« zusammen. Zwei der dort gehaltenen Vorträge drucken wir in diesem Heft ab. Sie werden ergänzt durch einen Artikel zu Günther Anders, dessen Überlegungen zu »Auschwitz« und »Hiroshima« einen deutlich anderen Denkansatz in dieser deutsch-jüdischen Nachkriegsgeschichte darstellen. Reese Treblinka: Death Camp to Commemoration Site Treblinka: Death Camp to Commemoration Site Stephanie Reese, History Dr. Natalie Belsky, Assistant Professor, History University of Minnesota-Duluth Preface: The history of Treblinka is one that I was not familiar with before May 2019. I was fortunate enough to travel to Poland as part of a study abroad program where I was able to visit the site of the death camp, Treblinka. After visiting and learning more about its history, I knew that it was a subject I needed to study further. My visit was truly life-changing. The Treblinka memorial is successful and thought-provoking. For me personally, the lack of material at the Treblinka memorial caused my visit to be much more meaningful. I was forced to imagine where the buildings were based on the model in the education center/museum. After I imagined where the buildings were, my mind took me to a dark place of imagining what the people deported to Treblinka were going through. How did they feel in the transport trains? What were they thinking when they arrived? Did they know what their fate would be? Those are only a few of the questions that came to mind as I walked through the field of stones that comprise the memorial field. The strangest thing during my visit was the birds singing, sun shining, and the overall beautiful environment I was standing in, despite knowing the atrocities that were committed there. It is my hope that through my research, I may gain some clarity on the topic of commemoration as a whole and why Treblinka was commemorated in this specific way. -

History 510:261/Jewish Studies 563:261 The History of the Holocaust Fall 2020 Professor Paul Hanebrink [email protected] TA: TBD Description of Course and Course Learning Goals The Holocaust has become a central reference point in our political, moral, and cultural life. Reflections on the Nazi genocide of six million European Jews have inspired fierce debates about a wide range of topics: how to compare different kinds of atrocities, what to call them, and how to commemorate them; how to represent unspeakable trauma in courtrooms, in art and literature, in public conversation; how to understand the motives of perpetrators; and how to seek justice for great crimes. The number of historical studies (both popular and highly specialized), documentary films, television programs, and movies about the Holocaust continues to increase every year, a sign that thinking about the Holocaust remains as urgent for many Americans today as it did several decades ago. Indeed, some form of Holocaust education in high schools is now mandatory in many states in this country, including here in New Jersey. This course is a history of the Holocaust. Our task this semester is three-fold. We will study in detail the places, events, and turning points that comprise the Holocaust as a historical concept, as well as the political, social, and ideological forces that lay behind them. We will also examine the Holocaust from many different perspectives in order to grasp the ways that individuals shaped, responded to, and interacted with those larger forces and events. Finally, we want to reflect on the ways that the Holocaust has been defined and remembered. -

ABSTRACT Archaeological and Anthropological Aspects of the Holocaust from a Jewish Perspective by Stephen Dixon B.Sc. The intention of this research is to offer innovative ideas on methods that can be utilised by academics and historians within a conflict context. The framework that will support the overall research is from that of an archaeological, anthropological and memory driven perspective. Discussion will turn to individual components such as liminality, monumentality, the built environment and landscape theory highlighting Nazi segregation policies. Analysis of ghettoisation, deportation and extermination policy through archaeological sub-disciplines and anthropology as well as comparison to other world atrocity sites will take place. This will illustrate that detection of similar techniques of incarceration are recognisable as modes of controlling fear whilst simultaneously achieving a terror regime. Initially propaganda policy of the National Socialist Party in both pre and World War II settings in Germany and throughout parts of Europe helped to fuel the already present culture of antisemitism. A significant and sinister shift in decision-making witnessed a move from persecution to exclusion and isolation that saw major cities already damaged by invasion and warfare ‘holding’ Jews in purposefully manufactured locations that was a preparatory step towards genocide. Ghettoisation facilitated the next stage in the process, deportation by train to extermination centres, as communities were despatched from ‘round-up’ points to ‘unknown destinations’ further east. At all times Jews were vulnerable and were placed into landscapes of terror, although either the strong individual or Nazi methods of control, at times, suppressed fear. Arrival at industrialised death camps was the final stage of a journey for the majority that culminated in death, but not before further measures that reduced the individual to a state beyond life, a liminal entity in a place where extreme conditions prevailed. -

Various murder weapons are claimed to have been used: mobile or stationary gas chambers; poison gas with delayed or immediate effect; unslaked lime; hot steam; high voltage; machine guns; vacuum chambers; chlorine Camp? Transit or gas; Zyklon B; diesel exhaust gas. According to the witnesses, Extermination Camp TTreblinkareblinka the corpses of the victims were fi nally incinerated on pyres as high as a multi-story building without leaving any traces. • EExterminationxtermination CampCamp In the fi rst part of this book, the offi cial image portrait of Treblinka is subjected to a thorough critique regarding its oorr TTransitransit CCamp?amp? historical genesis, inner logic, and technical feasibility. The result of this analysis is essentially that the historical picture, which is prescribed by penal law in many European countries, is untenable, because it is nothing more than an uninterrupted chain of absurdities. In the second part of this book, the authors attempt to deter- mine the real function of the Treblinka camp with the help of witness statements, documents, and forensic fi ndings. Through their analysis, they conclude that Treblinka was a transit camp, through which Jews from Warsaw and other areas were led on their way either to occupied Soviet territories in the east or to Treblinka the Majdanek camp and other labor camps in the area south of Treblinka.
