ABSTRACT The landscapes and material remains of the Holocaust survive in various forms as physical reminders of the suffering and persecution of this period in European history. However, whilst clearly defined historical narratives exist, many of the archaeological remnants of these sites remain ill-defined, unrecorded and even, in some cases, unlocated. Such a situation has arisen as a result of a number of political, social, ethical and religious factors which, coupled with the scale of the crimes, has often inhibited systematic search. This thesis will outline how a non- invasive archaeological methodology has been implemented at two case study sites, with such issues at its core, thus allowing them to be addressed in terms of their scientific and historical value, whilst acknowledging their commemorative and religious significance. -

Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Christopher Browning Chad Bryant Konrad Jarausch © 2014 Allison Somogyi ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Allison Somogyi: Decisions amid Chaos: Jewish Survival in Budapest, March 1944 – February 1945 (Under the direction of Chad Bryant) “The Jews of Budapest are completely apathetic and do virtually nothing to save themselves,” Raoul Wallenberg stated bluntly in a dispatch written in July 1944. This simply was not the case. In fact, Jewish survival in World War II Budapest is a story of agency. A combination of knowledge, flexibility, and leverage, facilitated by the chaotic violence that characterized Budapest under Nazi occupation, helped to create an atmosphere in which survival tactics were common and widespread. This unique opportunity for agency helps to explain why approximately 58 percent of Budapest’s 200,000 Jews survived the war while the total survival rate for Hungarian Jews was only 26 percent. Although unique, the experience of Jews within Budapest’s city limits is not atypical and suggests that, when fortuitous circumstances provided opportunities for resistance, European Jews made informed decisions and employed everyday survival tactics that often made the difference between life and death. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank everybody who helped me and supported me while writing and researching this thesis. Opening Statements Opening Ceremony Remarks at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Mr. Miles Lerman CHAIRMAN, UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL COUNCIL UNITED STATES It is proper and most fitting that this conference began with a symbolic ceremony of silent contemplation in the Hall of Remembrance of the Holocaust Memorial Museum where we invoked memory and paid tribute to those who were consumed in the Nazi inferno. Now let me welcome you to the Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is pleased to co-chair with the State Department this historic event. For the next three days representatives of 44 countries will have the opportunity to explore a just and orderly return of confiscated assets to their rightful owners. It took over 50 years for the world to come to grips with the fact that the biggest murder of the century; it was also, as my friend Ben Meed reminds us, the biggest robbery in history. This fact is not limited to one country only. What really shocked the conscience of the world was the discovery that even after the war, some countries tried to gain materially from this cataclysm by refusing to return to the rightful owners what was justly theirs. The refusal to respond to these rightful claims was a great injustice, a moral wrong which can not be ignored. And this is what brings us together today. We are here to make sure that these wrongs are corrected in a just and proper manner. 4 WASHINGTON CONFERENCE ON HOLOCAUST-ERA ASSETS Under Secretary Eizenstat and Edgar Bronfman deserve our gratitude for their unrelenting efforts to bring about full accountability for all wrongs that must be made right. -

Cultural Policy and Political Oppression: Nazi Architecture and the Development of SS Forced Labor Concentration Camps* Paul B. Jaskot Beyond its use as propaganda, art was thoroughly integrated into the implementation of Nazi state and party policies. Because artistic and political goals were integrated, art was not only subject to repressive policies but also in turn influenced the formulation of those very repressive measures. In the Third Reich, art policy was increasingly authoritarian in character; however, art production also became one means by which other authoritarian institutions could develop their ability to oppress. The Problem We can analyze the particular political function of art by looking at the interest of the SS in orienting its forced labor operations to the monumental building economy. The SS control of forced labor concentration camps after 1936 linked state architectural policy to the political function of incarcerating and punishing perceived enemies of National Socialist Germany.1 The specific example of the Nuremberg Reich Party Rally Grounds reveals three key aspects of this SS process of adaptation. The first aspect is the relationship between architectural decisions at Nuremberg and developments in the German building economy during the early war years. Before the turning tide of the war led to a cessation of work at the site, agencies and firms involved with the design and construction of the Nuremberg buildings secured a steady and profitable supply of work as a result of Hitler’s emphasis on a few large architectural projects. The second aspect focuses on how the SS quarrying enterprises in the forced labor concentration camps were comparable to their private-sector competitors. -
Resistance in the Ghettos
Say 76 Resistance in the Ghettos Tim Say While some scholars like Raul Hilberg have argued that there was little resistance from Jews during the Holocaust, the large amount of evidence available has demonstrated that this is false, and that Jews resisted in many different ways. Specifically in the ghettos throughout Europe, resistance took many different forms which can be categorized as either active or passive resistance. The most well-known examples of resistance are the various uprisings, such as in the Warsaw ghetto, though it also includes other active forms such as raids to attack German supply lines or train stations. Active resistance was not common throughout the ghettos, however, as it created controversy because of the very real threat of reprisals from the Germans, who had no compunction about killing dozens of Jews in retaliation for one German death. This threat divided many ghettos about whether or not active resistance was the appropriate action to take. The concept of passive resistance was perhaps more important, as it was much more prevalent throughout the ghettos and affected the everyday lives of the majority of the inhabitants. It included life giving examples such as the smuggling of food, as well as more psychological examples such as religious education, or cultural activities like music and theatre. These types of examples are especially important because they specifically address the German strategy of demoralizing the inhabitants of the ghettos. Additionally, they serve to demonstrate that resistance was not only common throughout the ghettos, but was integral in maintaining the health and identity of the Jewish community in the face of the desperate circumstances. -

The present dissertation attempts to provide a theology of grace that would enable twenty-first century postmoderns to meaningfully relate to the Christian tradition. A theological interface accomplishing the transposition of the theology and categories of the traditional account of grace into ones accessible to twenty-first century westerners is therefore constructed. By means of the study of landmark literary, philosophical and theological works on Auschwitz produced by individuals who directly suffered it, an attempt at monitoring the human (and ultimately postmodern) condition, experience and evolution (in themselves and in relation to the transcendent) through time from before, through the event and up to the experience of renewed freedom is made. This is followed by the consideration of the reality of grace as it has been experienced, reflected upon and understood by western Christianity. -
