  • The DIY Careers of Techno and Drum 'N' Bass Djs in Vienna
Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound. The year of Thunderdome. What will this mean for you? I’m excited about it because like most people know, I started my career at Thunderdome. Besides that, it’ s still the best hardcore event ever so to see it return for their 25th anniversary is awesome. Which Festivals can’t we miss this year? There are many festivals who are great but Defqon.1, Hardshock, BKJN vs Partyraiser, C.R.A.F.T, Outdoor Stereo, Harmony of Hardcore (especially the Footworxx stage) Dominator and Airforce 1 you can’t miss. I also would advise you to check out Tomorrowland 2017 because since last year they also do hardcore. What do you love about the Gabberscene? Most of all the people (The Crowd) and of course the music! Do you miss something in the Gabberscene? At this point I have no complains at all, love the people, love the scene. What things are you working on at the moment? I’m working on some great collabs with awesome producers. Unfortunately, can’t give you any names right now but it will be great. You already did so much in the Gabberscene, but what you still wish to do? I hope that I can deliver some new talents for the future What are your favorite things to do, besides the Gabberscene? I like to read true crime stories and spending time with my son.

The Aesthetic of the Drum Machine and Mechanical Introspection in the Club | n2o5r iSeenpt. c2o0m21 09:07:22 The Aesthetic of the Drum Machine and Mechanical Introspection in the Club REMIX by Riccardo Balli This text is a literary remix of Enrico Prampolini’s «The Aesthetic of the Machine and Mechanical Introspection in Art» (1922), considered a key text to understand the so- called second wave of Futurism, also referred to as «futurismo degli anni venti». The existence of such an offshoot of the Italian historical avantgarde gives Riccardo Balli, author of Sbrang Gabba Gang: Gabber Reconstruction of the Universe (2020), a wonderful opportunity to use his DJ-cum-writer skills to investigate the uncanny connections between the aesthetics discussed in the original manifesto and the various contexts of modern club music. Riccardo Balli’s interpolations are marked in bold https://norient.com/riccardo-balli/aesthetic-drum-machine-and-mechanical-introspection-clPuabge 1 of 7 The Aesthetic of the Drum Machine and Mechanical Introspection in the Club | n2o5r iSeenpt. c2o0m21 09:07:22 In the aesthetic phenomenon of the evolution of the bass drum the necessity of considering the Drum Machine and Mechanical elements as new symbols of aesthetic inspiration has not been sufficiently taken into account. Precursors We Gabber-Futurists were the first to understand the marvelous mystery of inspiration which drum machines possess with their own mechanical world. In fact, Dominator Marinetti in his first Manifesto on the Foundation of Gabber- Futurism published in the Figaro in 1909 stated: We shall sample the vibrant nocturnal fervour of the clubs and festivals lit with their violent strobo lights, the underbridge parties like giant hives buzzing on the rivers, the daring punters that nose the horizons, the high-speed locomotives that prance on the rails like enormous iron horses bridled with tubes, the gliding low-cost flight of the aeroplanes whose screw flutters in the wind like a flag or seems to applaud like an enthusiastic dance floor.
