Mary: The First Disciple

There are just five days left until the celebration of Christmas begins. Let us live these last days of Advent well, and with God-driven purpose.

We read in today’s Gospel passage from Luke the wonderful words of The Blessed Mother’s “fiat,” her “yes” to God’s plan. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” These are among the most beloved words in the Gospel. But, the next sentence is also important for the Christian disciple.

After Mary’s fiat, we read, “Then the angel departed from her.” Our Blessed Mother was left with a lot of unexplained details about God’s plan for her! Yet, she followed God’s will perfectly. She gave herself and her life fully to God as a gift. She trusted in her Heavenly Father to guide her at each step, and He Did. She was the first disciple. We are called to follow her example in our own Christian discipleship.

This Christmas, let us resolve to make our whole life a gift to the One Who has given us everything. It is the work of a lifetime, but He will give us all the help and strength we need. Let us each say “yes” to God’s plan for us.

St. Francis of Assisi Quarterly Financial Report

As we all know, COVID-19 has had a significant negative impact on revenues throughout the world. Here at St. Francis, we are not immune to the effects of this global pandemic. Below is a chart that shows our historical revenues by quarter. The December column for FY 2020-21 is what we are projecting to finish this calendar year.

While we saw a nice improvement from fiscal Q2 to Q3, we are still significantly below previous years. We thank you for your continued financial support and we are hopeful for a rapid end to the pandemic and a return to a normal life without limits on church attendance.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium

Practical Life Activities (#12 in a series of 12)

Maria Montessori pioneered the understanding that we must foster in the child independence and autonomy in a prepared environment. The child has shown us s/he “want to do it by myself.” Practical life activities nurture in the child this independence, whether learning how to roll up a mat, move a chair quietly, water and care for plants, or polish brass or silver materials. It is important that these activities aid in cultivating a desire in the child to care for their environment.

In the Atrium, a child might iron Altar Cloths or Purificators, arrange flowers to place on the prayer table, or dust furniture. They naturally extend this send of care of the atrium to caring for the church spaces.

“Caring for persons, beginning with the smallest and most vulnerable, and their day-to-day bonds, necessarily means caring also for the environment in which they live.” - Pope Francis

- Papa Francisco

AWAY IN A MANGER

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; The stars in the sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes; I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle ‘til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay Close by me forever, and love, me I pray; Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

DRUMMER BOY

Come, they told me, pa-rum pum pum pum. A new born King to see, pa-rum pum pum pum. Our finest gifts we bring, pa-rum pum pum pum. To lay before the King, pa-rum pum pum pum ... So to honor Him, pa-rum pum pum pum, when we come.

Little Baby, pa-rum pum pum pum. I am a poor boy too, pa-rum pum pum pum. I have no gift to bring, pa-rum pum pum pum. That’s fit to give the King, pa-rum pum pum pum…. Shall I play for you, pa-rum pum pum pum, on my drum?

Mary nodded, pa-rum pum pum pum. The ox and lamb kept time, pa-rum pum pum pum. I played my drum for Him, pa-rum pum pum pum. I played my best for Him, pa-rum pum pum pum... Then He smiled at me, pa-rum pum pum pum; Me and my drum.

Pg. 19

THE FIRST NOEL

The first Noel, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

REFRAIN: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. (REF)

And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country afar; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star where e’er it went. (REF)

O, holy night! The stars are brightly shining, it is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till He appeared and the Soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, the night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night O night divine!

Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains He shall break, for the slave is our brother And in His name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, With all our hearts we praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we, His power and glory evermore proclaim! His power and glory evermore proclaim!

Cantor: Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. (Refrain)
