Relative abundance, size and age structure, and stock status of blue cod off Banks Peninsula in 2016. New Zealand Fisheries Assessment Report 2017/30 81 p. This report describes the results of blue cod (Parapercis colias) fixed and random site potting surveys carried out concurrently off Banks Peninsula in April 2016. Surveys were split into separate inshore and offshore areas. Estimates are provided for population abundance, size and age structure, sex ratio, total mortality (Z), and spawner-per-recruit. This is the fifth survey in the fixed site survey time series following surveys in 2002, 2005, 2008, and 2012; and the second random site survey, with the previous survey carried out in 2012. Otolith thin section ages from 207 males and 97 females (inshore), and 256 males and 197 females (offshore) were used to estimate the population age structure with separate age-length keys for males and females, and inshore and offshore. Two readers achieved agreement on 83% of read otoliths, and overall there was no bias between readers with a CV of 1.9% and average percent error (APE) of 1.3%. Low maximum ages (8 years for males and 6 years for females) for inshore strata gave improbable von Bertalanffy (VB) parameters, especially L, so the combined inshore and offshore VB parameters were used in estimating spawner-per-recruit ratios. There was no clear indication of spawning activity during the survey period (fixed and random sites). 2016 fixed site survey Forty fixed sites (6 pots per site, 240 pot lifts) at depths of 8–90 m from five inshore and two offshore strata off Banks Peninsula were surveyed in

Blue cod is a bottom-dwelling species endemic to New Zealand. The species is taken predominantly in inshore domestic fisheries with very little deepwater catch. The major commercial blue cod (BCO) fisheries in New Zealand are off Southland (BCO5) and the Chatham Islands (BCO4), with smaller but regionally-significant fisheries off Otago, Canterbury, the Marlborough Sounds, and Wanganui. In the past, many blue cod fishers were primarily rock lobster fishers. Therefore, the amount of effort in the blue cod fishery tended to depend on the success of the rock lobster season, with weather conditions in Southland affecting the number of “fishable” days. Blue cod are found at a depth of up to 150 m. Spawning occurs in late winter and spring within inshore and mid-shelf waters. Length at maturity varies by location. In Southland, maturity is reached at 26-28 cm but is 10-19 cm in Northland (BCO1) and 21-26 cm in Marlborough Sounds (BCO7). Blue cod have also been shown to be protogynous hermaphrodites, with individuals over a large length range changing sex from female to male (Carbines 1998).     Horoirangi Marine Reserve Introduction Horoirangi Marine Reserve comes into being on 26 January 2006 after which all marine life within its boundaries will be totally protected; no fishing will be allowed. This fact sheet provides some brief information on the new marine reserve which was applied for by Forest and Bird. A more detailed pamphlet will be available in the next few months. The reserve’s name was chosen by Nelson iwi. Horoirangi was an important Maori ancestor who is regarded as a guardian of her people bringing Sea Anemones fertility and abundance. Project Code: 1NT9802 Project Leader: Michael Beentjes Duration of Project: Start Date: 1 October 1998 Completion date: 30 June 1999 Executive Summary: The trawl survey was successfully completed in December 1998-Januray 1999 and the data have been checked and loaded onto the trawl database. Preliminary results were presented to Inshore Working Groups 1 & 2 in February 1999. A NIWA Technical Report has been prepared (see the attached). Biomass estimates for the most abundant species and other commercially important species for which more than 200 kg were caught have been determined. Catch rates, distribution, and scaled length frequencies for the major commercial species have been charted. Length-weight relationships for the target species, rough skate, smooth skate, dark ghost shark, lemon sole, new Zealand dole, sand flounder, and hapuku have been calculated from the data. Target coefficients of variation were achieved on all four target species, elephantfish, red gurnard, giant stargazer, and juvenile red cod < 41 cm total length.
