In this issue, we feature National No Smoking Day which takes place in March as well as the latest Contract information and current news and events. Look out for more on our “Who’s Who in Pharmacy” feature, where we focus on members of the team to find out more about them and their roles within Pharmacy Services. You can also find out the results of our recent compliance aids survey, and feedback on Just in Case boxes from those who have used them. Natalie Bate, Communications Officer Fiona Forsyth, Communications Officer Lloyds Pharmacy, Burntisland Hit by Flooding After High Winds After the destructive high winds, Lloyds pharmacy at Burntisland was hit by flooding, after the chimney in the flat above was torn off during the early hours of Tuesday 3 January. The flat above had its mains water supply running for over 24 hours before staff at the pharmacy found out on the Wednesday after returning to work after the festive holidays, to find most of the dispensary under water! They lost all of their made up scripts for collection, and over 80% of their stock. The pharmacy was closed for 2 days for a clear up, but was up and running again by the Friday. PAGE 03 FIFE PHARMACY NEWS ISSUE 40 Wasted Medicines in Fife NHS Fife is launching a campaign to reduce the amount of wasted medicines in May 2012. We are highlighting the costs involved when medicines are wasted due to patients over-ordering on repeat prescriptions, or continuing to order medicines which they no longer take. Wasted medicines cost NHS Fife over £2million per year. The campaign is aimed at GPs, Pharmacy and Care Home staff as well as members of the general public reminding everyone not to order medicines “just in case” – if you run out of medicines, you simply need to visit your GP or local pharmacy. Pharmacies receive deliveries of medicines every day, so there should be no major delays to receive more medicines if you need them. • Stockpiling medicines at home is also a safety risk. • It is important to return any unused medicines to your local pharmacy. • All medicines which are returned to pharmacies must be disposed of, even if they are unopened or unused – they cannot be reused, recycled or sent abroad for legal reasons.
