    SIR ALFRED BEIT Issued 15th July, 1968 The second in the Famous Figures issue commemorated Sir Alfred Beit. “But, perhaps equally sharing in Rhodes' dreams and fortunes, was his friend and partner, Alfred Beit, who had much in common with Rhodes, through their association and common interest in the diamond mines of Kimberley. Alfred Beit was born of Jewish parents in Hamburg in 1853. His father Siegfried Beit was in partnership with one Goddefroy in a shipbuilding and boiler works. Alfred joined the German firm of Lippert & Co., who had diamond and wool interests in South Africa, to where he made his way in 1875. After spending a few weeks in Port Elizabeth, he left by coach for Kimberley, where he displayed a remarkable aptitude for business and soon became a partner in the firm of Wernher, Beit and Company—a firm which was to play a profound role in the financial affairs of South Africa. It was not long before Beit set about amassing a great fortune. It was at Kimberley that he first met Rhodes, and soon became entranced with his ambitious schemes. He became a close friend and collaborator of the great Empire builder, and lent him both moral and financial support in many of his plans. Rhodes had arrived in Kimberley four years before Beit and both shared the same ambition to control the diamond market of South Africa. Rhodes' great rival, Barney Barnato had similar ideas, but fought against Rhodes, whereas Beit collaborated with him. Eventually Barnato conceded defeat, leaving Rhodes virtually in command. Rhodes trusted Cecil Rhodes and Alfred Beit Beit, and seldom acted without first consulting him.

    Alfred Beit – Kimberley – 20 November 2017 Alfred Beit – South Africa’s financial genius Part 1 Kimberley The Right Man, in the Right Place, at the Right Time! The Man – was Alfred Beit, born in 1853, into a Jewish family in Hamburg. He was arguably the single most effective person in the transformation of Southern Africa from a sleepy dry agricultural backwater, into not one, but several modern industrial countries. But you would probably never know it – he hated publicity and preferred others to shine in the foreground. He did not set out to be a rich or powerful man. He just loved to make things happen in the most effective way to benefit as many people as possible and he relished the work involved. He was popular and attracted business like a magnet. He had an enviable reputation for generosity, integrity and fair play. Nevertheless, when he died at the age of just 53 he was possibly one the wealthiest men in the world. The place was the desert in the middle of South Africa where this boyish, fun- loving, young German arrived at the age of 22 to deal in diamonds. Kimberley is where he joined the influential French Diamond company J Porgès and Co and grew into a hugely successful organiser of and investor in mining companies as well a major diamond merchant – and became a great friend and colleague of Cecil John Rhodes. Email: [email protected] Abstract Regarded not only as a line that separates South Africa and Zimbabwe to underline the interiority and exteriority of the two countries, as well as to control and manage migration and immigration, Beitbridge border effectively plays out the immigration debates and dynamics at the heart of the nation-state of South Africa. Based on a qualitative study of how migrants from other African countries are treated at this border and in Johannesburg inner city, we suggest that the harassment suffered by the migrants at the hands of border officials, including immigration officials, the police and army, is indicative of a larger dynamic that exists in the centre, which is represented by Johannesburg inner city. Such bordering and rebordering practices at the border and at the centre reflect negatively on the spirit and letter of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regional integration project.     Rhodesian Sunset Factional Politics, War, and the Demise of an Imperial Order in British South Africa By Michael Brunetti A thesis submitted to the Department of History for honors Duke University Durham, North Carolina Under the advisement of Dr. Vasant Kaiwar April 15, 2019 Brunetti | i Abstract The pursuit of an unorthodox and revolutionary grand vision of empire by idealistic imperialists such as Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Milner, and Percy FitzPatrick led to the creation of a pro-conflict imperial coalition in South Africa, one that inadvertently caused the South African War. This thesis examines the causes behind the South African War (also known as the Second Anglo-Boer War), sheds light on those culpable for its occurrence, and analyzes its effects on South Africa’s subsequent failure to fulfill the imperial vision for it held by contemporary British imperialists. This thesis addresses the previous historiographical debates on the relative importance of the factions that formed a coalition to promote their interests in South Africa. Some of these interests focused on political and economic matters of concern to the British Empire, while others pertained to Johannesburg settlers, primarily of British extraction, who had their own reasons for joining the pro-imperial coalition. Moreover, this thesis emphasizes the importance of the pro-imperial coalition’s unity in provoking the South African War while also explaining the coalition’s post-war decline and directly correlating this to the decline of British influence in South Africa.
