COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING DECISION (EU) 2021/160 of 21 15.2.2021 EN Offi cial Jour nal of the European Union L 51/303 COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING DECISION (EU) 2021/160 of 21 January 2021 adopting the twelfth update of the list of sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region (notified under document C(2021) 20) THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, Having regard to Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (1), and in particular the third subparagraph of Article 4(2) thereof, Whereas: (1) The Pannonian biogeographical region referred to in Article 1(c)(iii) of Directive 92/43/EEC comprises parts of the Union territories of Czechia, Romania and Slovakia and the Union territory of Hungary, as specified in the biogeographical map approved on 20 April 2005 by the committee set up by Article 20 of that Directive (the ‘Habitats Committee’). (2) The initial list of sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region, within the meaning of Directive 92/43/EEC, was adopted by Commission Decision 2008/26/EC (2). That list was last updated by Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2020/98 (3). (3) The sites included in the list of sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region form part of Natura 2000 network which is an essential element of protection of biodiversity in the Union. In order to make further progress in the actual establishment of the Natura 2000 network and in the context of a dynamic adaptation of that network, the lists of sites of Community importance are reviewed regularly. (4) Between 21 May 2019 and 22 January 2020 Member States have proposed additional sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region. Member States have also submitted changes in the site- related information contained in the list of sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region. (5) On the basis of the draft list drawn up by the Commission in agreement with each of the Member States concerned, which also identifies sites hosting priority natural habitat types or priority species, an updated list of sites selected as sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region should be adopted. Article 4(4) and Article 6 of Directive 92/43/EEC apply to the newly included sites. (6) Knowledge of the existence and distribution of the natural habitat types and species is constantly evolving as a result of the surveillance undertaken in accordance with Article 11 of Directive 92/43/EEC. Therefore, the evaluation and selection of sites at Union level was carried out using the best available information at the time. (7) Certain Member States have not proposed sufficient sites to meet the requirements of Directive 92/43/EEC for certain habitat types and species. Furthermore, knowledge of the existence and distribution of some natural habitat types listed in Annex I and some of the species listed in annex II to Directive 92/43/EEC remains incomplete. For those habitat types and species it can therefore not be concluded that the Natura 2000 network is complete. (8) In the interests of clarity and transparency, Implementing Decision (EU) 2020/98 should be repealed. (9) The measures provided for in this Decision are in accordance with the opinion of the Habitats Committee, (1) OJ L 206, 22.7.1992, p. 7. (2) Commission Decision 2008/26/EC of 13 November 2007 adopting, pursuant to Council Directive 92/43/EEC, the list of sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region (OJ L 12, 15.1.2008, p. 678). (3) Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2020/98 of 28 November 2019 adopting the eleventh update of the list of sites of Community importance for the Pannonian biogeographical region (OJ L 28, 31.1.2020, p. 475). This information has been transmitted by the competent national authorities in accordance with the second subparagraph of Article 4(1) of Directive 92/43/EEC. The table below gives the following information: A: SCI code comprising nine characters, the first two being the ISO code for the Member State; B: name of SCI; C: * = presence on the SCI of at least one priority natural habitat type and/or species within the meaning of Article 1 of Directive 92/43/EEC; D: area of SCI in hectares or length of SCI in km; E: geographical coordinates of SCI (latitude and longitude) in decimal degrees. All the information given in the Union list below is based on the data proposed, transmitted and validated by Czechia, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. It aims to guarantee the effective and lasting preservation and protection of Jewish cemeteries and mass graves throughout the European continent. Identified by the Hebrew phrase Lo Tishkach (‘do not forget’), the Foundation is establishing a comprehensive publicly-accessible database of all Jewish burial grounds in Europe, currently featuring details on over 9,000 Jewish cemeteries and mass graves. Lo Tishkach is also producing a compendium of the different national and international laws and practices affecting these sites, to be used as a starting point to advocate for the better protection and preservation of Europe’s Jewish heritage.     © Lonely Planet Publications 357 Northeast If you want to experience Hungarian village life – steeped in folk culture, replete with dirt roads, horse-drawn carts and little old churches – the Northeast is the place. Traditions are long-kept in the Bereg Region, where some women still eke out a living embroider- ing pillowcases in age-old patterns, and men work the land. Rural folk art, churches and a cemetery resembling a ‘shipyard’ of grave markers are the attractions here. Hospitality is at its height in the furthest corners of the Northeast; you’ll never be welcomed into even the poorest home without a shot of pálinka (fruit-based firewater that Hungarians call ‘brandy’) and a chocolate. Not far off, the larger towns of Nyírség have history to offer and more ecclesiastical treas- ures – Nyírbátor prides itself on not one but two noteworthy, originally Gothic churches, and the iconic art in Máriapócs is downright miraculous. Since distances are short (and regional transport so inadequate) a great way to explore is to hire a car and trip out from the capi- tal, Nyíregyháza. The spa town with a pleasant pedestrian centre has most of the creature NORTHEAST comforts, and a few activities of its own. In the leafy Sóstófürdő park you can soak in four different thermal-bath complexes and step into the region’s village past at an excellent open- air museum.
