2014 - 2015 BE ACTIVE MARATHON SERIES

MARATHON SERIES INFORMATION

The Marathon Series is organised by the West Australian Marathon Canoe Racing Technical Committee (WAMCRTC) which is a sub- committee of the Canoeing WA Board.

DIVISION SET UP : The Series will be run as in previous years, using a grading system for all races, except the 10km Championships, the State Marathon Championships and Special Events. • Paddlers will compete directly with other paddlers of similar speed regardless of craft, age or gender; • The Division format simplifies registration and presentations at the finish of each event. At the start of the season, paddlers are ranked “Fastest to Slowest” by speed based on the previous season’s results.

Full Length Course Shorter Courses Division 1 top 25% of paddlers Division 5 Short/Junior Course Paddlers Division 2 next 25% of paddlers Division 6 Novice Paddlers, Any age group Division 3 next 25% of paddlers Division 6 Guppy U12, Division 4 next 25% of paddler Division 7 Guppy U10

Team Boat Divisions will be set up only when there are sufficient (minimum 4 craft) entries to make competitive Groups. Grading Doubles, K3s or K4s within the Divisions allows paddlers to learn to wash ride faster craft.

Paddlers of unknown ranking will be started in Division 2 unless otherwise advised by the Race Director.

Moving between Divisions Paddlers will have their Division changed throughout the season at the discretion of the Technical Committee.

2014 - 2015 BE ACTIVE MARATHON SERIES

ENTRY PROCEDURE Entries are expected to be completed and paid online via the Canoeing WA web page ( http://wa.canoe.org.au/ ). Season Prepaid members have a separate entry line at no cost. On-line Entry will allow paddlers to be graded into Divisions according their average pace (mins/km) of previous races during the season and will also allow the formation of Team Boat divisions when four or more craft register and constitute a competitive class. Guppy Paddlers that are not members of an Affiliated Canoeing WA Club must nominate an INDIVIDUAL to be their on-the-water escort on their entry.

Entries will be accepted on the day of the race during the registration time but an extra fee above the online price will apply. Paddlers must provide the following: FULL NAME, CLUB, Year of Birth, CRAFT TYPE and GENDER of paddler/s and an EMERGENCY CONTACT name and phone number which will be answered on the day. Note particularly which races require a car shuffle. Please aim to be at the venue at the start of registration to enable the briefing and race to commence on time. Age categories are listed on page 4 of this book. Guppy paddlers must be 12 years or younger, Juniors are all U18 and adults are all others. Non-members will be required to complete a declaration of fitness to compete for the season including their full name and address, contact details and emergency contact.

AGE CATEGORIES Age categories for Marathon Racing in Western Australia are given on Page 4. Crews made up of competitors who individually qualify for different age categories shall compete in the category matching the age of the competitor closest to the open category following the same guidelines as those for amalgamation of classes. In the case of the crew consisting of junior and veteran competitors (and no open competitors) that crew shall compete in the open category. Australian Canoeing maintains a register of birth dates of competitors, to categorise paddlers for age category events. Extract of birth certificate, driver's licence or similar document is sufficient verification. If a competitor sets an age record while competing in a senior category, this will be recognised, provided that the competitor has initially been entered into that same senior age category.

SHORT / JUNIOR COURSES Short course races are scheduled for paddlers who prefer to compete over a shorter distance. Courses are usually about 6 – 12 kilometres, and if applicable, are described in the briefing. No differentiation is made between age, genders and craft types, unless there are sufficient entries to make up a class of 3 – 4 paddlers of similar age and/or craft. Records are not maintained. Short course and junior course may be the same course. Juniors (U10 to U18) may paddle ICF recognised K1 or K2, Australian Canoeing recognised TK1, International Guppy K1 or K2 or Ocean Ski.

GUPPY RACES Guppy races are held when suitable river conditions allow. Courses are between 2 and 7 kilometres and open to paddlers of Guppy kayaks who are 12 years of age or less. All Guppy race competitors must wear a correctly fitted PFD and have a parent or guardian’s consent to race evidenced by signature at registration. Safety of these races is paramount and the race will not take place if there are insufficient parent or helper paddlers to escort the Guppies. Paddlers who prefer to paddle with a close Escort in K1s, TK1s or on skis are encouraged to do the U12 Guppy Course as a Novice paddler. For rescue efforts all Guppy Craft must have a bulkhead behind the cockpit or airbags installed. Suitably experienced social/non-racing paddlers are encouraged to nominate as escorts. Please collect your Paddle Escort vest at registration. All U12 Paddlers that are not members of an Affiliated Canoeing WA Club must have an INDIVIDUAL on-the-water escort as specified on their entry who will be asked to stay with 30m of their child.

WEARING OF PFDS All Paddlers are advised to wear a suitable PFD, especially if inexperienced or unsure of the conditions. All paddlers must be able to swim 50 metres in canoeing clothes and, if required, a PFD. All JUNIOR participants under 14 years of age when racing in Divisions or participating in an U14 Class when racing in Age groups, MUST WEAR a PFD while racing. A parent or guardian is required to consent to a Guppy or Junior entering the event and must be present during the event.

LATE REGISTRATION FEES Under exceptional circumstances late entries may be registered after the published time of briefing at the discretion of the registrar and subject to payment of the late registration fee of $10.00. Late registration fees apply to all paddlers including those with Season Prepaid.

SCRUTINEERING All craft are expected to be within the measurement ruling of the ICF, AC or Canoeing WA rules for that type of craft. All canoes/kayaks shall have sufficient fixed buoyancy to float with cockpit rims well clear of the water level when filled with water. All craft are subject to unannounced spot checks at the finish line. A competitor may be disqualified if their craft or equipment fails inspection. Race organisers also may inspect competitors’ craft and buoyancy prior to the event. A paddler may NOT compete if their craft or equipment fails inspection before the official start time. In this case, entry fees are NOT refundable.

NUMBER SLOTS & COMPETITION NUMBERS Race numbers will be provided at Registration. It is the paddler’s responsibility to ensure that the number is displayed vertically either through the use of a number slot or suitable tape (bring your own). If Turn Officials and Timers cannot read your number, your finishing time may not be recorded. In the event that a number is lost overboard, please attempt to retrieve it and return any that you find. The numbers are costly to replace and repeated losses may incur a Replacement fee.

STARTING PROCEDURES Start order and method will be advised at briefing. Procedures requiring advance notice are listed under the relevant race description. Please note those races that require a CAR SHUFFLE. All paddlers must register and complete their warm up and car shuffle before the compulsory ‘Safety and Course Notes’ briefing. Changes may be made to the published procedure should weather and/or safety concerns dictate.

GENERAL RACE SERIES RULES Regulations regarding conduct during the race, race procedures, safety, protests, and organisation of races will be in accordance with the ICF and Australian Canoeing Marathon Racing Rules and WA local rules. All competitors must be aware of the rules and regulations. They are available on the Australian Canoeing Webpage -- ICF and AC Marathon Rules 1. ICF Canoe Marathon Competition Rules - 2013 2. AC Marathon Racing Committee Marathon Racing Rules Version 1st November 2013 Paddlers infringing rules are liable to penalties or disqualification. Take particular note of the following points: 1. Special entry conditions for an event are listed in the event details in this handbook. 2. A paddler who does not attend briefing will be considered to have withdrawn. No refund will be available. 3. AC Marathon Rule 10 -- Canoe Marathon may involve participants in dangerous situations. It is a requirement that any competitor seeing another in real danger shall render all assistance in his or her power. Failure to do so may involve disqualification. 4. In Western Australia Marathon Canoe Racing, a competitor who alleges that his/her finishing position has been materially prejudiced by rendering assistance to another competitor may request redress from the Competition Committee. 5. Under International Maritime Rules, all craft must keep to the starboard (right hand) side of a channel. In a head on collision situation, both craft should turn to starboard (right). 6. Over-taking boat must keep clear of boat they are overtaking. If you are being passed you must maintain your course and not attempt to block the overtaking craft. 7. Paddlers are not allowed under Duty of Care to put another paddler into danger. 8. It is RECOMMENDED that a PFD (buoyancy vest) be worn by every paddler. 9. It is COMPULSORY for a paddler under 14 to wear a correctly fitting PFD (buoyancy vest). 10. All craft are expected to have their race number clearly visible to turn mark officials and finish line judges and timers. 11. A two minute time penalty will be applied to anyone breaking the start. 12. All turns must be made in an anti-clockwise direction unless otherwise advised. 13. Portages must be completed alongside the defined course of the river, and without reducing the race distance. Portage entry and exit must be accessed only between the designated portage flags. 14. Any paddler who crosses the finish line a second time will be penalized or disqualified at the discretion of the timers.

NOTE: Canoeing WA encourages participation of ALL paddlers in ALL Marathons, in ALL types of craft. The Marathon Series is designed to encourage paddlers to graduate to the recognised international classes. The International Canoe Federation recognizes ONLY the K1, K2, K4, C1, and C2 competition classes, and does NOT allow inter-class wash riding. The Australian version of the ICF rules allows for many boat types, the discretion of the discipline committee in the conduct of State and Club Marathons and to permit wash riding. Canoeing WA conducts Marathons under the Australian Rules. You may wash ride any craft in the event passing you except in State Championships where you can only wash ride craft on your own start line.

GUPPY COURSES

Over the last few years we have had special courses for the U10s and U12 paddlers racing in Guppy kayaks or Novice paddlers in other craft. The Guppy kayaks are all very similar in size and shape with a bulkhead behind the seat. This makes them very easy to right by an escort after a capsize and the paddler can continue to participate in the event. These courses have parents, coaches and interested paddlers escorting them, at least 1 escort to 5 Guppy paddlers. All paddlers must wear a suitable PFD and be able to swim 50 metres dressed for canoeing.

Guppy, Novice and U12 Paddlers that are not members of an Affiliated Canoeing WA Club must have an INDIVIDUAL on-the-water escort as specified on their entry form who will be asked to stay with 30m of their child.

2013-2014 WA CANOE MARATHON Season – Thank You

The Canoeing WA Marathon Technical Committee wishes to recognise the support throughout the previous season with race notifications and reports by Terry Bolland and Canoeing Down Under.

WAMCRTC thanks Bindi Nutrition for their support of the Double Barkers Race and suggest that paddlers try their Natural Energy and Endurance Race Supplements available via selected stores or via their website www.bindinutrition.com.au

The State Marathon Championships would not have been the success they were without the support of :-- Screwpile Technologies – Bayswater, for the anchors used to hold the pontoon in place The BIG Band of Volunteers that helped organise and run the event in so many ways.

It would not be possible to run the marathon races without the willing help of many volunteers. To those people on the registration table, timing, turns and escorting our sub-junior paddlers we all owe a very BIG thank you.

MARATHON TECHNICAL COMMITTEE The Committee consists of a Chairperson and at least four other positions filled by nominees approved by the Board of Canoeing WA Inc. Expressions of interest are invited for available positions to be finalised by June for the next series that starts in October. Each position is generally held for 2 years with half the Committee standing down each year. Any interested person is able to attend Committee meetings, simply ask to be informed when the next meeting is held. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Technical Committee contact a Committee person so you can gain experience during this series.

"Each paddler has a personal duty of care to themselves and fellow canoeists. Yes, canoeing does have a % of danger. You, the paddler, should personally assess the race you are about to take part in and know that you are able to get yourself to safety. Know your boundaries in all conditions and do not depend on race officials. Assist fellow paddlers and remember common sense prevails at all times." Submitted by the Marathon Technical Committee Chairman (2005-2006), source unknown.

Are you ready for the State Marathon Championships 7-8 March 2015 ?? National Marathon Championships, Easter, 3 - 5 April 2015, in Canberra, ACT. World Championships in Gyor, Hungary, Sept 2015

2014 - 2015 BE ACTIVE MARATHON SERIES

TROPHIES and AWARDS PRIZES are awarded to FIRST, SECOND and THIRD placegetters in each Division. Placegetters must collect their prizes on the day or they will not be awarded. In State Championships Events, GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE medallions are awarded for FIRST, SECOND and THIRD placegetters in each class provided each placegetter finishes ahead of at least one other competitor in the same class. U14 and 55+ paddlers as decided by the WAMCRTC.

PERPETUAL AWARDS The "SECRETARY'S TROPHY" is awarded to the most successful PADDLER for the Series. The “MARATHON LADY” was awarded for the first time in the 2003-4 series to encourage female participation. The "LES RIMMER TROPHY" is awarded to the most successful Club for the Series, based on the total of points (see below) from paddlers for their respective Clubs.

SCORING Points for the Secretaries Trophy and Paddler-of-the-Year Awards will be awarded for every race in the Marathon Series on the basis of age (minimum of 3), then gender (minimum of 3), then craft (minimum of 4, eg K1, MS1, OS1, K2, K3). Paddlers in team boats will be awarded points based on the age group that they race in ( ie a 35+ & 55+ paddler in a K2 will be awarded points as a 35+ K2, but they will carry these points back to their individual age group). The WA Canoe State Championships will carry double points for all paddlers completing the events.

• 5 points - FIRST place • 2 points - THIRD place • 3 points - SECOND place • 1 point - ALL OTHER finishers in a class Points for Special Events • 6 points - FIRST place • 3 points - THIRD place • 4 points - SECOND place • 2 points - ALL OTHER finishers in a class Points accumulate through the Series for both paddlers and their clubs. Paddlers from different clubs competing in a Team Boat will each receive full points for themselves and split points for each of their respective clubs (see “TROPHIES AND AWARDS”).

ANNUAL AWARDS Since the 2004-05 season we have awarded Paddler-or-the-Year plaques for the most consistent and successful paddler in each of the age groups and both genders if there are sufficient people over the season to make up the “class”.
