Disciplines refer to the different “sports” within the greater sport of canoeing, kayaking or, simply, paddling. The types of events within each discipline, listed below, generally have speci c rules and equipment to suit. Canoe Polo Canoe polo is a game of two halves of 10 minutes where two teams of ve players battle it out with a water polo ball. The aim is to score into a goal, which is suspended above the water at each end of a rectangular ‘playing pitch’. These pitches can be on open water or they can even be in a swimming pool. Marathon Marathon canoe racing is an exciting canoeing competition with a world-wide follow- ing. It is a true endurance sport for all ages, with races from 10km all the way up to ultra-marathons. It uses various types of water and can include portages (carrying the craft for a short distance). In marathon, Australia has some of the most highly-quali ed and successful marathon paddlers in the world, including several world champi- ons. Slalom Canoe Slalom is an exciting sport where the paddlers have to negotiate their way down a 300m white-water rapid. Paddlers race through a series of up to 25 gates, which are made up of red and green poles. These poles determine the direction paddlers must pass through gates. Paddlers have the challenge to race as fast as they can through the course of gates while battling with the white-water rapids of waves, stoppers and eddies to accomplish the quickest time. Paddlers are awarded time penalties of two seconds if they touch a gate and 50 seconds if they miss a gate altogether, which is added to their running time. The combined score of time and penalties determines the nishing order. Sprint In sprint racing events, athletes race on a straight course, with each boat in a sepa- rate lane, over four different distances: 200m, 500m, 1000m and 5000m. There are kayak events in single (K1), double (K2) and four (K4) boats and canoe events in single (C1), double (C2) and four (C4) boats. In a kayak, the paddler is seated and uses a two-blade paddle, while in a canoe, the paddler is kneeling on one knee and uses a single-blade paddle. The higher the UV, the greater your chances of getting sunburnt and skin cancer. Make the most of your day by using the UV Index. It is a fast and energetic game and, despite appearances, has a low risk of injury. The rules are based on safety, allowing dynamic, exciting play that is very entertaining for spectators. Each team has up to eight players, with five players in the playing field at any one time. The field is 35 x 20 metres in size, with a goal suspended two metres above the water at each end. Players paddle a specially designed kayak called a ‘polo bat’, and players in possession of the ball can be ‘tackled’ by the opposition’s kayak or ‘hand tackled’ on the shoulder to capsize them. The ball can be passed hand-to-hand like basketball, or flicked using the paddle. Paddles can also be used to intercept passes and block shots at goal. Events Canoe Polo season runs all year. For the season dates and times and begin- er courses please go to Perth Canoe Polo Club Faceebook page Marathon Guppy Marathon courses are 3 to 6 km and the races all have parents or experienced paddlers escorting.
