It challenges the notion of a “great divide” between Republic and Revolution by tracing contentious interactions between technocrats, politicians, and financial elites on one hand, and mobilized, mostly-Afro-descended tenants and shantytown residents on the other hand. The dynamics of housing inequality in Havana not only reflected existing socio- racial hierarchies but also produced and reconfigured them in ways that have not been systematically researched. -

For this performance, Malpaso will present Ohad Naharin’s Tabla Rasa in its entirety. Tabula Rasa made its world premiere on the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre on February 6, 1986. Thirty-two years after that first performance, on May 4, 2018, this seminal work premiered on Malpaso Dance Company in Cuba. A new work by company member Beatriz Garcia Diaz will also be on the program, set to music by the Italian composer Ezio Bosso. The title of this work is the Spanish word Ser, which translates to “being” in English. Sims Virginia Commonwealth University Hipertexto At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality. Che Guevara More and more I've come to understand that when we mourn what a place used to be, we are also mourning what we used to be. Ana Menéndez any of the discussions and debates of the Cuban Revolution in Miami, M Havana and elsewhere converge, merge and diverge in the person and persona of Che Guevara. This process produces a mesmerizing mixture of myth, reality, and nonsense which we are far from unscrambling: “There's just this fascination people have with the man - which is not of the man, but of the photograph," says Ana Menéndez, author of ‘Loving Che’” (http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0305/p13s02-algn.html). The photograph in question is Alberto Korda’s famous picture of Che Guevara taken on March 5, 1960 at a Cuban funeral service for victims of the La Coubre explosion. The photographic reality of Che soon transformed itself into an iconic image which traveled around the world. Che’s image has since undergone myriad changes and has become a pop culture, fashionista icon and capitalist commodity marketed and sold all over the world, including Cuba. Nostalgia and memory occupy the interstitial space between Che Guevara’s personal and revolutionary life and his now simulacralized iconicity: “Part of Guevara's appeal is that his revolutionary ideals no longer pose much of a threat in the post-cold-war world. -

The Is/enos had very few weapons, and some served unarmed as the state provided no firearms. By the time the British were defeated, the Islenos had sustained the brunt of life and property loss resulting from the British invasion of Louisiana. 1838 The first. Mardi Gras parade takes place in New Orleans on Shrove Tuesday with the help and participation of native-born Latin Americans and Islenos. 1840s The Spanish-language press in New Orleans supersedes the state's French-language press in reach and distribution. 1846-1848 Louisiana-born Eusebio Juan Gomez, editor of the eminent Spanish language press newspaper La Patria, is nominated as General Winfield Scott's field interpreter during the Mexican-American War. -

The following study assesses these charges. After establishing a definition of terrorism, it examines U.S.-Cuban relations from 1808 to 1958, arguing that the United States has historically employed violence in its efforts to control Cuba. U.S. leaders maintained this approach even after the Cuban Revolution: months after Fidel Castro‟s guerrilla army took power, Washington began organizing Cuban exiles to carry out terrorist attacks against the island, and continued to support and tolerate such activities until the 1970s, culminating in what was the hemisphere‟s most lethal act of airline terrorism before 9/11. -

Brock: Back to the Future Lisa Brock BACK TO THE FUTURE: AFRICAN AMERICANS AND CUBA IN THE TIME(S) OF RACE* UBA HAS, AT LEAST SINCE the American revolution, occupied the imagination of North Americans. For nineteenth-century capital, Cuba's close proximity, its C Black slaves, and its warm but diverse climate invited economic penetration. By 1900, capital desired in Cuba "a docile working class, a passive peasantry, a compliant bourgeoisie, and a subservient political elite.'" Not surprisingly, Cuba's African heritage stirred an opposite imagination amongBlacksto the North. The island's rebellious captives, its anti-colonial struggle, and its resistance to U.S. hegemony beckoned solidarity. Like Haiti, Ethiopia, and South Africa, Cuba occupied a special place in the hearts and minds of African-Americans. -

Yet, a mere ninety miles from Key West, across the Straits of Florida, lies an island nation — larger than all the other islands of the Caribbean combined — with a story that would seem inconceivable were it not true. No book or photograph can prepare you for the enormity of what you see and feel upon arrival in Havana. The architecture, the landscape, the food, the music, the art and the people are all exceptional. To experience Havana and see, firsthand, remnants of what it was before the Cuban Revolution, what it is today, and to catch a glimpse of the gradual changes the entire country is undergoing is breathtaking, enchanting and, at the same time, haunting.
