A Brief History of Utah's Utes
Timponogos - Ute A BRIEF HISTORY OF UTAH’S UTES Deep Creek Mountains - Goshute ANCESTRAL UTE TERRITORY CURRENT UTE RESERVATIONS Ute tradition suggests that the Ute people were brought here from the south in a magic sack carried by Sinauf, a god who was half wolf and half man. Anthropologists argue that the Utes began using the northern Colorado Plateau between one and two thousand years ago. Historically, the Ute people lived in several family groups, or bands, and inhabited 225,000 square miles covering most of Utah, western Colorado, southern Wyoming, and northern Arizona and New Mexico. Each of these bands was independent, but the Ute people were bound by a common language, close trade relationships, intermarriage, temporary military alliances, and important social and religious events. The major event for the Utes was, and still is, the Bear Dance, an annual gathering to celebrate the coming of spring. The Ute people ranged over a wide but well-known area to engage in a sophisticated gather- ing and hunting economy. They gathered seeds, berries, and roots, and hunted deer, rabbits, birds, Monument Valley - Navajo squashes, and potatoes. and fish. Long before white settlers arrived in Utah, many of the Utes raised corn, beans, pumpkins, The introduction of the horse in the 1600s brought major changes to the Ute way of life, although some Ute bands used the horse more than others. The horse allowed the Utes to travel farther and more quickly, and the Utes began to adopt many aspects of Plains Indian culture, living in mobile teepees and hunting buffalo, elk, and deer over long distances. -

In explanation of his point, Sperry writes: 'It is not just that the poetry is taken up in isolation from the life of the poet, from the deeper logic of his career both in itself and in relation to the history of his times, although that fact is continuously disconcerting. It is further that in reducing the verse to a structure of ideas, criticism has gone far toward depriving it of all emotional reality'(14). 2. See, in particular, Federico Olivero's essays on Shelley and Ve nice (1909: 217-25), Shelley and Dante, Petrarch and the Italian countryside (1913: 123-76), Epipsychidion (1918: 379-92), Shelley and Turner (1935); Corrado Zacchetti's Shelley e Dante (1922); and Maria De Courten's Percy Bysshe Shelley e l'Italia (1923). A more recent, and important, work is Aurelio Zanco's monograph, Shelley e l'Italia (1945). Other studies of note are by Tirinelli (1893); Fontanarosa (1897); Bernheimer (1920); Bini (1927); and Viviani della Robbia (1936). 3. In researching this field of study, Italian critics have found Shelley to be their best spokesman. 4. A work such as Anna Benneson McMahan's With Shelley in Italy (1907) comes to mind. Hers is a more inclusive anthology than John Lehmann's Shelley in Italy (1947) but needs to be brought up to date. 5. There has been a growing recognition of the importance of the Italian element in Shelley's poetry. Significant studies in English since those of Scudder (1895: 96-114), Toynbee (1909: 214-30), Bradley (1914: 441-56) and Stawell (1914: 104-31) are those of P. -

What you will discover during our conference is that Denver is not just a single city but an entire region offering many great cultural resources as well as great scenic beauty. Our evening events will capitalize on the best that the Denver area has to offer. The opening event will be hosted in the heart of Denver by History Colorado, site of exhibits about Colorado’s history (including “Backstory: Western American Art in Context,” an exciting collaboration with the Denver Art Museum), and by the Clyfford Still Museum, where the works and life of one of the fathers of abstract expressionism are exhibited.
