Boosting Social Enterprise Development Good Practice Compendium © OECD/European Union, 2017 Chapter 19 Specialisterne & SAP: A partnership for access to markets, multiple countries/ Denmark Specialisterne and SAP have established a partnership that aims to harness the special skills of people with autism, and provide them with training and work- integration opportunities. To this end, they have implemented the “Autism at Work Programme”. This chapter describes the partnership’s objectives, rationale and key activities, together with the challenges faced in implementing it and the impact it has achieved to date. It concludes with the lessons learnt and the conditions for transferring this practice to another context. Summary While people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have unique skills – for example, an outstanding memory or a remarkable eye for detail, a structured way of working, the ability to think outside the box and perform repetitive tasks with ceaseless enthusiasm – they struggle with social interaction and personal communication. Specialisterne (“The Specialists”) is a social enterprise established in Denmark in 2004 to pioneer new ways of harnessing the untapped skills of people with ASD and empower them by matching them with businesses in need of information technology (IT) experts. An impact assessment of Specialisterne concluded that its consultants have become valuable contributors to the labour market and solid taxpayers, less reliant on social-welfare contributions. In 2008, Specialisterne Foundation (SPF) was established to scale the Specialisterne model and impact, with the objective of creating one million jobs globally for people with ASD by 2025. To this end, it has developed partnerships with international 215 19. -
Editorial: Pride and Autism Spectrum Disorder
EDITORIAL: PRIDE AND AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER June 14, 2019 Tuesday June 18 is Autistic Pride Day and every April, thanks to National Autism Awareness Month, there’s a renewed sense of support for people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and those who’ve worked tirelessly to foster environments of inclusion and self-determination for all. Yet, when Autism Awareness Month comes to an end, so too does much of the focus on autism from the general public. As a society, we’ve made positive strides, but it’s important to remember that the conversations about acceptance, inclusion and support for people with ASD need to happen year-round. Today Autistic Pride Day is about celebrating differences in the autism community and realizing people’s infinite possibilities and potential. People with autism have hopes, dreams, aspirations, and a right to participate in the working world. Unfortunately, people with ASD are not afforded the same opportunities as the rest of us when it comes to employment. While the majority of Americans are enjoying a low unemployment rate and strong economy, the unemployment rate for adults with developmental disabilities remains high. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 29 percent of Americans ages 16 to 64 with a disability were employed as of June 2018, compared with nearly 75 percent of those without a disability. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities who are actively seeking work is 9.2 percent — more than twice as high as for those without a disability (4.2 percent). Employers’ lack of understanding and lasting stigmas are partly to blame for this discrepancy. -

And welcome to the Respectability webinar for July 27, 2016. I'm delighted to be here with you today, one day after the 26th anniversary of The Americans with Disabilities Act. We're excited to be joined today by Thorkil Sonne. If you've been working on the employment issues with people with disabilities, you probably heard the name Thorkil come up. And that is with some very good reason. He's been doing amazing, innovative work with employment opportunities, high technology jobs with people in the Autism Spectrum. We're delighted to be here today to share his experiences to show-- what it does and we always with these webinars, we want to bring in the leaders and game changers who are at the frontlines with jobs with people with a wide variety of disabilities. We're glad to be here with Thorkil. Our webinar is possible by the wonderful support of JP Morgan Chase. After this webinar, in a couple of days, we shall be posting a recording of this session as well as a copy of the PowerPoint slides that we're going to be going through today. TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Copyright by John Edward Marris 2013 Canadian Studies Ph.D. Graduate Program January 2014 ABSTRACT Pausing Encounters with Autism and Its Unruly Representation: An inquiry into method, culture and academia in the making of disability and difference in Canada John Edward Marris This dissertation seeks to explore and understand how autism, asperger and the autistic spectrum is represented in Canadian culture. Acknowledging the role of films, television, literature and print media in the construction of autism in the consciousness of the Canadian public, this project seeks to critique representations of autism on the grounds that these representations have an ethical responsibility to autistic individuals and those who share their lives. This project raises questions about how autism is constructed in formal and popular texts; explores retrospective diagnosis and labelling in biography and fiction; questions the use of autism and Asperger’s as metaphor for contemporary technology culture; examines autistic characterization in fiction; and argues that representations of autism need to be hospitable to autistic culture and difference. In carrying out this critique this project proposes and enacts a new interdisciplinary methodology for academic disability study that brings the academic researcher in contact with the perspectives of non-academic audiences working in the same subject area, and practices this approach through an unconventional focus group collaboration. -

The National Autism Project: aims and objectives The National Autism Project: Address for correspondence aims and objectives E-mail: ian@ nationalautismproject. org.uk C Ian Ragan, London Editorial comment Dr Ian Ragan is the director of the National Autism Project (NAP), launched in April 2015 and funded by The Shirley Foundation. In this paper, he describes the key aims of the project and the advisers and organisations who are contributing to this work. He makes the case that the spending on autism, relative to other conditions, is very low and that this has limited the progress on identifying the most effective interven- tions. It is hoped that data will be gathered on the cost-benefit of different services and strategies which can then be used strategically to inform future practice in health, education and social care and the voluntary sector. Autistic self-advocates largely oppose groups of parents of autistic children and professionals searching for a cure for autism. This article discusses the posi- tions of the pro-cure and anti-cure groups. It also addresses the emergence of autistic cultures and various issues concerning autistic identities. It shows how identity issues are frequently linked to a ‘neurological self-awareness’ and a rejection of psychological interpretations. It argues that the preference for cerebral explanations cannot be reduced to an aversion to psychoanalysis or psychological culture. Instead, such preference must be understood within the context of the dif- fusion of neuroscientific claims beyond the laboratory and their penetration in different domains of life in contemporary biomedicalized societies. Within this framework, neuroscientific theories, prac- tices, technologies and therapies are influencing the ways we think about ourselves and relate to others, favoring forms of neurological or cerebral subjectivation. The article shows how neuroscien- tific claims are taken up in the formation of identities, as well as social and community networks. -

However, even autistic individuals who are profoundly disabled eventually gain the ability to communicate effectively, and to learn, and to reason about their behaviour and about effective ways to exercise control over their environment, their unique individual aspects of autism that go beyond the physiology of autism and the source of the profound intrinsic disabilities will come to light. These aspects of autism involve how they think, how they feel, how they express their sensory preferences and aesthetic sensibilities, and how they experience the world around them. Those aspects of individuality must be accorded the same degree of respect and the same validity of meaning as they would be in a non autistic individual rather than be written off, as they all too often are, as the meaningless products of a monolithically bad affliction." Based on these extremes -- the disabling factors and atypical individuality, Phil says, they are more so disabling because society devalues the atypical aspects and fails to accommodate the disabling ones. That my friends, is what we are working towards -- a place where the group we seek to "help," we listen to. We do not get offended when we are corrected by the group. We are the parents. We have a duty to listen because one day, our children may be the same people correcting others tomorrow. It supervises all the essential functions of the body by receiving the information through five senses: sight, hear, smell, taste and touch and the messages are assembled in a way that has meaning for us. Humans are affected from a number of neurodevelopmental disorders which results in poor ability to function in daily life. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a composite set of mental disorders due to deterioration in the growth and development of brain defined by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication and repeated unusual behaviours.
