  • Creating Culture Through Food, a Study of Traditional Argentine Foods
Unit Title: Creating Culture through Food: A Study of Traditional Argentine Foods Author: Kyra Brogden George Watts Magnet Montessori, Durham, NC Subject Area: Writing and Language, Social Studies Topic: Food and culture Grade Level: 1st, 2nd, 3rd (Lower Elementary) Time Frame: 4 days of 45-minute lessons on Argentine food, nutrition and culture Cooking: 3 days of cooking and 1 day to put together the cookbook *The cooking lessons will require more time and resources. Also the cookbook may require going through a rough draft and final copy that can occur after the lessons themselves are completed. That can be done at the teachers’ discretion. Brief Summary: This unit will focus on helping students understand the role of nutrition and food in defining a culture by studying Argentine nutrition and food. The first four lessons will focus on comparing nutritional guidelines, evaluating food, and a discussion about meal times in both the United States and Argentina. The students will then embark on a series of three lessons that each focus on a traditional Argentine food. The students will cook the food, create a nutritional analysis, learn about the history of that food, and then write food reviews. The students will ultimately make a cookbook with the recipes, pictures, nutritional analysis, and their own food review. Established Goals are taken from the Common Core Standards for Grade 2: Research to Build and Present Knowledge 7. Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g. read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations) 8.

A Book History Study of Michael Radford’s Filmic Production William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS of RHODES UNIVERSITY by BRYONY ROSE HUMPHRIES GREEN March 2008 ABSTRACT Falling within the ambit of the Department of English Literature but with interdisciplinary scope and method, the research undertaken in this thesis examines Michael Radford’s 2004 film production William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice using the Book History approach to textual study. Previously applied almost exclusively to the study of books, Book History examines the text in terms of both its medium and its content, bringing together bibliographical, literary and historical approaches to the study of books within one theoretical paradigm. My research extends this interdisciplinary approach into the filmic medium by using a modified version of Robert Darnton’s “communication circuit” to examine the process of transmission of this Shakespearean film adaptation from creation to reception. The research is not intended as a complete Book History study and even less as a comprehensive investigation of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice . Rather, it uses a Shakespearean case study to bring together the two previously discrete fields of Book History and filmic investigation. Drawing on film studies, literary concepts, cultural and media studies, modern management theory as well as reception theories and with the use of both quantitative and qualitative data, I show Book History to be an eminently useful and constructive approach to the study of film. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I want to thank the Mandela Rhodes Foundation for the funding that allowed me to undertake a Master’s degree.

  • Press-Kit Presents a Film by Konstantin Lopushansky THROUGH THE
Press-kit presents A film by Konstantin Lopushansky THROUGH THE BLACK GLASS The drama titled Through the Black Glass is a modern interpretation of such famous classical plots as Cinderella and Scarlet Sails, with a touch of Chaplin`s City Lights. The main heroine is an 18-year-old blind girl from a provincial orphanage, who unexpectedly gets a chance of a lifetime. A wealthy man offers to pay for an expensive eye surgery on the condition that she agrees to marry him before the operation, without a single glance at the groom. Alas, fate hands out happy endings sparingly, and the vision, miraculously regained by the heroine, gives her an unpleasant insight into stark realities of life. The film directed by Konstantin Lopushansly, who also wrote the original script, is not just a new rendition of the classical plot; it is a deep glance at the ambiguous relationship between men and women in the present-day Russia. The author makes an emphasis on dynamics of editing, music, photography, and, obviously, the choice of actors. The director says, “You can analyze the film in view of several genres: tragic melodrama, a modern rendition of the classical Cinderella plot, and a religious drama loosely based on the conceptual conflict in Dostoevsky`s Gentle Creature. The story is centered at the tragic collision of two world outlooks: the religious belief and the atheistic view, set against the newest Russian history. The latter interpretation is the closest to me, and is in tune with my views as a film director. Yet, this still leaves space for detailed elaboration into the other two variants, melodrama being the priority.

  • Report on the Foreign Policy of the Czech Republic 2002
Introduction In the international arena, the Czech Republic strives to act as a democratic and politically, economically and socially stable Central European country, pursuing not only its own particular interests but also assuming its share of responsibility for the development of Europe and the entire international community. The international environment in which the Czech Republic pursues its foreign policy is a product of the interaction of a number of factors – sovereign countries, associations of countries at different levels of integration in international organisations and institutions, and non-governmental entities, ranging from non- governmental organisations to various non-transparent lobbying groups not respecting the rules of international relations, including organised crime groups and terrorist organisations. The role, import and influence of these factors fluctuate, often within a very short time span. Following the end of the cold war and the disintegration of the bi-polar world, and as a result of changes in the security environment, the intensification of globalisation processes, the liberalisation of the global economy, the increasing mutual dependence of countries, and the accelerating development of science and technology, there has been significant growth in the importance of multilateral co-operation within the framework of international organisations and integration groupings. At the same time, in the face of new threats posed by certain non- transparent entities, and terrorist organisations in particular, all international mechanisms designed to protect against such dangerous phenomena are rapidly gaining in importance. The Czech Republic, as a country which, by size and population, ranks among medium- sized countries in the European area, and as a country with an open economy, a high proportion of exports and services in the generation of its gross domestic product, and with limited natural resources, is markedly dependent on international co-operation.

  • Luboš Ptáček the Sudetes in Czech Cinema – a Political
72 Luboš Ptáček Luboš PTáčEK The Sudetes in Czech Cinema – a Political Space Trapped by National and Class Stereotypes* Abstract: The theme of Czech-German co-habitation in the Sudetes, from where over two million German citizens were uprooted after the Second World War, has become one of the most politicalised themes in Czechoslovakian and then Czech cinematography. In this study, the analyses are primarily focused on motifs linked with representation of historical and present Sudetes, and development of Czech-German relations. Concretely, it focuses on nationalistic actions, the escalation of Czech-German relations after Hitler’s coming of power in Germany, conceding the Sudetes to the Reich, expelling the Germans after World War Two, the arrival of Czechs after the war, fate of ethnically- mixed families, and protection of national borders. The aim of the study is to describe changes in the discourse of film and television representations of history in Czech society following the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 until the present day, and interpret these in the context of political changes. In particular, I will focus on the reasons which caused the deformation and silencing of historical events linked with those in the Sudetes. The analyses conducted along the diachronic axis should prove the hypothesis that changes in the representations of history and present Sudetes correspond with changes in society, and strongly present the contemporary Czech(oslovakian) position to the 20th century history. Keyword: Sudetes, history and film, Czech-German relations, Czech cinema, ideology. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Time Wanderers by Arkady Strugatsky Prominent Russians: Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Arkady and Boris Strugatsky are well-known Soviet-Russian science fiction writers with a highly developed fan base. They became the spiritual leaders of Russian sci-fi literature in the 1960s, and to this day, their influence remains immense - entire generations were brought up on their books and loved them for their unique style. Though the early works of the Strugatsky bothers lacked individuality – at the beginning of their writing career their novels and short stories resembled those of Ivan Yefremov, a Soviet paleontologist and science fiction author who was the brothers’ lifetime icon and role model. Strugatsky novels were very different from ordinary sci-fi novels: strictly speaking they didn’t write showpiece science fiction. The brothers have always tried to write not just about spaceships, technology or other fantastic stuff, but also about people and their problems. At the beginning of the 1990s the brothers became the best-known and loved Soviet science-fiction writers abroad – their works were translated into multiple languages and published in 27 countries; a success Russian writers rarely experienced in the West. Arkady Strugatsky. Childhood. Arkady Strugatsky was born on 28 August 1925 in Batumi, Georgia; his mother was a teacher and his father – a fine arts expert, who at the same time earned a bit on the side as a newspaper editor. Two months after the elder son was born, in autumn 1925, the family moved to Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). When WWII broke out, Arkady first helped constructing defenses and then assisted at the grenade manufactory.
